Anakin visit Padme’s apartment. She is surprised and happy to see him. They sit and talk about how the clones should approach the Senate in order to gain sympathy. As they converse Padme flirts and makes a joke. Anakin smiles but suddenly his smile changes to concern. He grabs Padme and throws her to the ground. The apartment is filled with blaster fire from a skiff outside. The smugglers have found the senator and wish to express their displeasure. Anakin ignites his lightsaber, stands up, and bolts to the skiff. Before the skiff can escape, Anakin flies through the shattered window and lands on the deck. He kicks one smuggler who falls to his death.

The smuggler Padme cut cackles, “What do we have here? A Jedi. Our beauty keeps fancy company. Boys, show our friend what we do to Jedi.” There is a flash of light and Anakin’s lightsaber dissipates. A grappling wire shoots from one of the smuggler’s wrists and wraps around Anakin before he can react. Another smuggler levels his pistol at Anakin. “Goodbye Jedi. You should keep out of other people’s business.” Before the smuggler can fire, the skiff his hit from the side. The smugglers and Anakin lose their balance falling to the deck of the skiff. Padme jumps from her speeder and starts shooting the smugglers. The one she cut grabs her from behind and wraps his arm around her throat. The smuggler boasts, “What do you say Jedi? I’ll break her neck and then I’ll toss you both over.”

Anakin rolls over and faces the smuggler. The smuggler forms a toothless grin. The smuggler moves his hand tighter around Padme’s throat. He lets out a growl which abruptly changes to a wheeze. He removes his hands from Padme’s throat to his own. He is choking and on the deck. Padme stands over him confused. Anakin gets to his feet and joins Padme’s side. Anakin winces, “I think we’ve heard enough out of you.” He looks over at Padme, “What should I do with him?” Padme touches Anakin’s arm and says, “Let him go.” The smuggler gasps. Padme leans in, “I told you if you did anything stupid we would finish our conversation.” A patrol of soldiers surrounds the skiff. “Consider our business arrangement void.” She stands up and faces the soldiers, “Arrest these men.”

The Press corps of the Republic arrive on Alderaan. Obi-Wan notices that the gala is even more impressive. Tarkin grumbles about the security risks. Senator Organa stands at the podium surrounded by clones. He pens the peace treaty followed by one of the clones representatives. Organa states, “The first step toward peace is cooperation and understanding.” He holds up the peace treaty and then holds up another parchment, “the next step is to end the bloodshed. The planet of Alderaan will be the first to usher in this new era. We decree a world without weapons.” He points to a large viewscreen, “See here. Today under the witness of all. The planet Alderaan removed all its weaponry. We plea with the galaxy. Lay down your arms and join us.”

Bail Organa makes his way off the stage and walks among the people who applaud and rejoice. Obi-Wan steps to his side clearing a way through the sea of people. Governor Tarkin stands with a squad of soldiers at attention behind him. An insolent Tarkin slowly claps, “A wonderful scene. What do you do for an encore?”

Organa smirks, “Governor, you are familiar with the charter that allows you and your troops to occupy this world? Oh, of course you are. The Chancellor was very thorough with his reforms. It states here,” Bail shows Tarkin a datapad, “that any planet engaged in hostilities requires a military presence. As you’ve just seen, Alderaan has no hostiles. You are no longer necessary.” Tarkin’s brow furrows. Before he can speak, Bail continues,“Don’t bother arguing. I’ve already cleared this with the Senate. Have a safe trip.”

The vein in Tarkin’s forehead throbs, “I will not forget this, senator.” Tarkin turns on his heel and exits.

Organa watches him leave, “Of that. I have no doubt.”

Obi-Wan leans in, “You’ve just made a very powerful enemy.”

Bail laments, “If I’m right about what is to come, we are about to have many powerful enemies.”

The light in Padme’s bedroom is subdued. Anakin and Padme lay side-by-side. Padme giggles, “Did you use a Jedi mind trick on me?”

Anakin retorts, “I don’t know. Should I?”

Padme hits him, “Don’t you dare.”

They snuggle. Anakin sits up and places his arm around Padme. She nuzzles close to him. Anakin winces, still nursing the bruise from the altercation with smugglers, “Why did those smugglers redecorate your apartment?”
Padme is uncomfortable and evasive. Anakin faces her and asks, “Are you in some kind of trouble?”

Padme protests, “No. Nothing like that. I hired those thugs to smuggle some clones.” Padme sighs and continues, “I got into politics to help people. My first mentor was a clone. My first friend was a clone. Then, I’m asked to round up my friends and mentors and place them in a refugee camp. I understand what the Chancellor is trying to do but he is going about it the wrong way.”

Anakin smiles, “Well, tomorrow we’ll appeal to the Senate and hopefully they’ll listen.”

They share an embrace.

Anakin and Padme meet up with Lev and Rebwa on their way to the Senate. There is a commotion and a fanfare. Anakin asks, “Are we late?” Lev snickers. They squeeze through the crowd and see the Chancellor approaching a podium. The Senate has turned into a rally. There is a military presence and the senatorial boxes are filled with citizens. It’s pandemonium.

Palpatine steps to the mic and settles the crowd. He begins, “First I’d like to applaud the efforts of Senator Organa of Alderaan.” There is a smattering of applause. “But one successful Peace Accord does not negate the defiance and treason of several clones. As I’ve stated countless times, the clones have served their purpose. They are a thing of the past. We must move forward. We do not want artificial people supervising us. We want to handle our own affairs.” The cheers erupt. Palpatine smiles and waits for the crowd to settle, “In that same vein, we no longer need superior beings enforcing justice.” Padme and Anakin exchange an inquisitive glance. “The Jedi have been incapable of keeping the peace. Their numbers have suffered as a result. They are no longer a viable guardian. They will be replaced by the military governors and soldiers from your own worlds. Your neighbors and friends will patrol and maintain the peace.” Palpatine gestures to the troops surrounding the stage. Applause bellows.
Palpatine steps back to the podium, “And now my friends. I have brought reform. I have ushered in a new era. As your emperor, I will bring glory to the Galactic Empire. We will cast away the shackles of the past and embrace the protection and stability of the future.” The auditorium erupts in applause.

Anakin turns to his comrades, “It appears we’ve underestimated our illustrious emperor.”

The cheering continues. The camera passes over the crowd and slowly approaches Palpatine at the podium, arms raised triumphantly. Palpatine cackles into the camera.

Several cruisers enter screen left and pass under the camera. One of the larger cruisers heads directly toward the camera. The camera centers on the bridge and enters through the bulkhead. It approaches a diminutive figure sitting surrounded by windows with a view of space. Yoda is meditating with his eyes closed. As the camera gets closer, it zooms in on Yoda’s face. Once Yoda’s face fills the screen his eyes open sharply. He sighs.

Yoda starts walking across the deck bridge. On his right and left, recessed in the floor, are the command stations for the ship. Obi-wan stands over a tech and monitors the proximity sensor array. As Yoda passes, Obi-wan turns, “Master, may I have a word?” Yoda cocks his head and nods. Obi-wan directs Yoda out of earshot of the officers. Obi-wan expresses to Yoda his concern about Anakin. Anakin is displeased with the stance the Jedi have taken regarding their expulsion. Anakin feels they have been delegated to pro bono mercenaries or Ronin. He wants to call the Jedi to take a more aggressive role.

Yoda laments the decline of the Jedi. He explains that he has taught for 900 years and he will continue to teach until the Force takes him. The Jedi are custodians of the Force. They must master and hone it, not wield it like a weapon. Yoda asks Obi-wan what Anakin intends. Before Obi-wan can continue, the door opens. Anakin, Bail, and Lev emerge.

Bail and Lev are engaged in a heated argument. Lev has a multitude of clone refugees that require aid. Bail expresses that his involvement is too exposed. If he risks anymore his world will be occupied by the Empire.
As the three reach Yoda and Obi-wan, Anakin interrupts and says, “This argument is futile. We need to take the fight to the Emperor.”

Obi-wan looks at Yoda and says, “That is his intention.”

Bail explains that systems are not ready to mount a rebellion. They have embraced the Empire and have prospered by doing so. “Once they realize they have handed over their freedom, systems will revolt. That’s when the rebellion will begin.”

Lev protests once again about the need requiring immediate action. Anakin offers refuge on Sullust and Mustafar, worlds sympathetic to their cause. Lev complains about the inhospitable atmosphere and conditions on both worlds. Anakin gets frustrated and leaves.

Bail agrees with Anakin and thinks the clones should seek refuge on the outer worlds. Lev explains that since the outer systems are out of the public eye, the Empire can get away with atrocities. The heated argument resumes while Yoda and Obi-wan watch.

A very pregnant Padme is speaking with a representative from her home world Mustafar. The rep reports that the Empire is on its way with an armada with the intention of occupying. Padme expresses her knowledge of this being an eventuality. She comforts and affirms the rep and signs off. Anakin enters the room. Seeing his love’s sorrow, he inquires. Once he hears the news, Anakin is outraged. Their intention was to raise their family on Mustafar, free from the tyranny. For Anakin, this is the last straw. His plan is to rally the outer systems against the Empire. Padme explains that the outer systems want to keep out of it.

She says, “If we raise an army and build an empire, we are no different.”

Anakin replies, “But it would be our Empire.” Then he places his hand on her belly, “Our dynasty.”

Padme moves Anakin’s hands to embrace her. She whispers, “I don’t want that for our children.”

Anakin looks into her eyes, “They can either rule or kneel to the tyranny.”

Padme sighs realizing Anakin speaks the truth. The state of the galaxy is fight or flight. She pulls Anakin closer.

The Emperor sits in his throne room overlooking the vast and crowded skyline of Coruscant. A signal whistles and Palpatine opens the hologram channel. It is his spy. She relays the happenings we witnessed on the bridge. She says that Anakin Skywalker plans to attack the Empire, specifically the Emperor. Palpatine relishes, “Just as I have foreseen. What is the status of the armada en route to Mustafar?” proving that he is steps ahead of them. Then the Emperor asks about Padme’s pregnancy. When the spy reports Palpatine says, “Stay vigilant. I will deal with them soon.”

screen wipe

Anakin wakes next to Padme. He gets dressed and heads to the bridge. He meets Lev and tells him about the armada heading to Mustafar. He asks Lev, “Are you ready to fight for what you want?” Lev exits to plan to take some of the fleet to defend Mustafar. Anakin heads to Obi-wan’s quarters to ask for his help. The spy watches them leave.

Obi-wan is not happy with the decision. Anakin asks as a friend for his help. Anakin admits that he is still learning and this mission requires a master. Obi-wan smirks, “Playing to my ego. Well done.” They share a laugh.

They leave Obi-wan’s quarters and run into Padme. She asks, “Where are you two heading?”

Anakin quips, “We just need to liberate a system before breakfast. We’ll be back in time for lunch.”

Padme protests and Anakin kisses her as she does. He turns and runs off. “See you soon, love. Come on, Obi-wan.”

Obi-wan kisses Padme on the cheek. “I’ll keep him safe.”

As they race down the corridor. Padme calls after them, “May the Force be with you!!”

Padme waddles down the corridor and enters the turbolift. The lift stops and Bail enters. He greets her graciously. The lift stops again. Yoda enters and they all exchange pleasantries. Bail congratulates Padme. Padme asks about Bail’s family and he laments that his wife cannot conceive. Bail explains that he needs to keep that a secret since he requires an heir. The lift reaches the bridge and the conversation comes to an abrupt end. As they exit, Yoda comments that the lives stirring within Padme are strong with the Force.

There is a bustle on the bridge. Bail inquires and Padme answers, “It’s my husband.” They watch a squadron of fighters exit the ship. They enter hyperspace followed by some of the fleet. Yoda sighs. Bail asks, “Can someone please explain to me what is going on?”

The Empire’s armada surrounds Mustafar. Shuttles escorted by fighters disembark and head to the planet. Fighters patrol the command ships. Anakin’s ship is the first to exit hyperspace. He starts picking off fighter after fighter on his way to the largest command ship. The rest of the Clone fleet exits hyperspace and the battle ensues. Anakin avoids blaster fire while targeting the bridge of the command ship. He uses the Force on the pylons of the shield generators. They disconnect and float into space. Anakin picks each one off. They explode and crash into the command ship. Anakin informs the fleet, “One down. Who’s next?”

screen wipe

Bail is in the docking bay preparing to leave. Yoda and Padme thank him for all his assistance and bid him a fond farewell. As Bail turns to enter his ship, the docking bay is rocked and explosions are heard. Alarms sound. Padme looks out of the docking bay and sees an attack fleet. She realizes they are defenseless since Anakin took most of the fleet to Mustafar. She turns to them and says, “I have a bad feeling about this.”

There is pandemonium. The ship starts slanting and Padme loses her balance. Yoda catches her with the Force. Bail says, “We’ve got to get out of here. This ship is lost.” Pilots scramble for their fighters. Padme looks at Yoda and they both decide to go with Bail. They get on board and Bail signals to the pilot to take off. The spy is the pilot.

screen wipe

The battle over Mustafar continues. The Empire has taken incredible losses. There are several ships ablaze. Obi-wan comments, “Why don’t they retreat?”

Anakin replies, “Poor leadership.”

They are interrupted by Lev, “Anakin, there is a report from the ship Padme is on.” (I guess I should name the ship)

Anakin closes his eyes and reaches into the Force. “Oh no.”

Obi-wan says, “Anakin. Wait.” He watches Anakin’s fighter turn and enter hyperspace.

Lev asks, “What do we do now?”

Obi-wan replies. “Our job.” He turns his fighter toward the planet.

screen wipe

Bail’s ship is under attack. Several fighters are following it. Bail orders the pilot to jump to lightspeed. The ship disappears but some fighters follow them and the barrage continues in hyperspace. The ship continues to rock. Padme screams in pain as a piece of the ship hits the side of her head. An explosion is heard and the ship exits lightspeed. The pilot shouts that they should brace themselves. The ship has a trail of smoke and flames as it plummets toward a planet. They enter the murky atmosphere. The pilot informs them they are coming in very hot.

Yoda is a state of calm through all the chaos. Suddenly, the ship jerks and lands softly. “Landed we have.” They all look at Yoda in disbelief and relief.

As they exit the ship, Bail explains that the atmosphere is blocking any communication. The fighters following them would not being able to track them since they exited hyperspace abruptly. Bail helps Padme off the ship. He is hit from behind by the spy who places a gun to Padme’s head. Yoda turns to face the spy. He tries to use the Force on her. He comments, “The Dark side I feel. Altered your mind.”

The spy boasts that she is protected from the wizard. At that point, Padme elbows the spy in the gut. As Padme tries to escape, the spy fires the blaster at her. Yoda deflects the blast with the Force. The spy turns the blaster on Yoda. Yoda deflects the blasts and then crushes the blaster with the Force. “Be able to touch your mind I may not but all around you the Force is.”

The spy cries out in rage and charges Yoda. Yoda surrounds her with a Force bubble. A flash of light brightens the area. Padme shields her eyes. Yoda lifts the spy into the air and throws the bright Force bubble away from them a safe distance. He covers Padme and Bail with a Force shield. The bubble filled with the power of the Dark side of the Force explodes in the distance. It creates a cave in the side of a hill.

“Ok are you?” he asks Padme eyeing the ugly gash on the side of her head and the several bruises on her body.
She nods but then looks uncomfortable, “Master Yoda, have you ever delivered a baby?”

screen wipe

Anakin exits hyperspace. He is panicked. “Padme, where are you? Where are you?” A few fighters head in his direction and request that he identify himself. They meet an unfortunate end. Anakin tries to find Padme using the Force but cannot. He reaches the ship they were on just that morning and it is in pieces. Anakin shouts enraged. He turns his ship toward the fighters systematically destroying them. His fighter is a blinding fast distributor of destruction.

screen wipe

Obi-wan surveys Mustafar looking at the occupation army. The army is preparing to launch its attack on the palace. The palace is built in the side of a mountain surrounded by cliffs and valleys with artillery. There is only one way in or out. Obi-wan signals for passage. Obi-wan and Lev land and get an update from the palace guard in charge. Obi-Wan looks down at the river of lava and comments about the danger. The palace guard informs him that droids monitor the lava throughout the planet. They are prepared for any possible injuries suffered. Obi-wan scoffs at the possibility of surviving lava. The guard points out his second-in-command with a prosthetic arm and half his face covered with mechanical parts. Obi-wan acknowledges politely.

Obi-wan, Lev, and the palace guard plan out the defense of the palace. Obi-wan grabs a repulsor jet pack and says, “Let’s get to work.”

Padme sits on Bail’s cloak and leans against a fallen tree holding her two new-borns. She is exhausted. She thanks Yoda and Bail while admiring her children. The moment is short-lived, though. Blaster fire erupts and Padme is hit. Bail takes cover firing back. Yoda uses the Force to carry the children to safety. Yoda doesn’t understand why he didn’t sense the soldier’s approach. He decides to use the forest and starts dropping trees around the location where the shots came from. The soldiers attempt to avoid the falling trees. They run right into the open and Bail takes them down.

When Bail and Yoda check Padme, she is weak and dying. She pleads with Yoda and Bail to watch over her children. She reaches for her two babes and dies.

screen wipe

Anakin’s fighter floats in space surrounded by total destruction. Anakin is a broken man. He sits in his cockpit sobbing. He cannot sense Padme or the children. He can feel himself slipping. His rage has made him unbelievably powerful. He plots a course back to Mustafar.

screen wipe

Obi-wan floats hundreds of feet above the lava river. He leads the clones and the palace guard against the Empire troops. They are tired and losing ground. Obi-wan is about to sound the retreat when Anakin’s fighter soars through the valley. Anakin sets his fighter on autopilot and jumps from it as it passes one of the support ships. He lands on a platform, ignites his lightsaber, and starts dispatching several soldiers to their death as they fall from the ship. Anakin steals one of the repulsors packs from a soldier. He drops a grenade and jumps off. The support ship explodes.

Anakin heads towards the valley into the main line of the Empire’s advance. Obi-wan sees a lightsaber in the distance and notices the troops retreating. Obi-wan sounds a rally cry and orders an attack.

screen wipe

When Yoda inspects the soldiers, he can still sense nothing. Bail comments, “Well, they are dead.” Yoda explains that the dark side can conceal thoughts but Yoda has never seen it conceal a whole person. Yoda posits that only a Master of the Force would be capable of such a feat. Bail says, “Someone has gone to much trouble.”

Yoda comments that the Emperor is threatened by the Skywalker children and they must protect them. Yoda and Bail take the fighters left by the soldiers. They exit the planet and Yoda senses a disturbance in the Force. He feels the children are in danger. He tells Bail to take them to Alderaan and Yoda will go to Mustafar and inform Anakin.

screen wipe

Anakin stands on a precipice and surveys the valley filled with smoke and destruction. The palace stands unharmed. Obi-wan approaches Anakin. Anakin turns and Obi-wan takes a step back. Anakin sneers, “The Dark side is so powerful.”

Obi-wan is concerned, “The more it gives, the more it takes. What happened to you?”

Anakin prepares to respond when Yoda enters the scene. Anakin is shocked, “How? How are you still alive?”

Yoda dismisses the question, “The Dark side I sense in you, Anakin.”

Anakin shouts, “Answer the question!! Where is Padme? Where are our children?”

Yoda hangs his head, “Padme is dead.”

Anakin moves to attack Yoda. Yoda creates a Force bubble and pulls Obi-wan within. Anakin cannot penetrate it. He lashes at it in frustration. Yoda says, “Powerful you are but not powerful enough.”

Anakin asks how Padme died. Yoda explains, “The Emperor had a spy on the ship. The Emperor’s agents hunted down and murdered Padme.”

Anakin raged, “You couldn’t stop them!?! You useless fools!! You sit around and admire the Force but you don’t use it. There is so much you are capable of. I will show you what we can do. I will show you what needs to be done.” Anakin turns to leave.

Obi-wan moves to stop him. Anakin ignites his lightsaber. Yoda tells Obi-wan to let him go.

Obi-wan holds his head in his hands. Yoda explains that Anakin has given himself to the Dark side. In his 900 years, he’s seen it happen to many proud Jedi. Eventually, it destroys them. Yoda tells Obi-wan about the spy’s disturbed mind and the power the Emperor possesses. Yoda says, “Never again see Anakin I fear.”

Anakin’s fighter exits hyperspace directly above Coruscant and blazes past the planetary defenses. In a daring bit of flying Anakin lands on the Emperor’s Tower. Several of the Emperor’s sentries stand to defend. Anakin slices through them and makes his way to the Emperor’s chambers. When he enters the chambers, Palpatine turns and calmly says, "Welcome, Anakin Skywalker.”

Anakin is frozen. The Emperor stands and begins, “At this point you’ve surmised that you are incapable of moving. It’s a little trick I picked up over the years. Fortunately, I don’t get to use it often but this is a special occasion.”

Palpatine gets right in Anakin’s tense face, “I could easily kill you but I won’t.” Palpatine steps back, “I need you, Anakin. I have a dilemma. I’ve created in essence a military government. It’s only a matter of time until they get the notion that they are in charge. This is where you come in. You will be my enforcer, an extension of my will.”

The Emperor circles Anakin, his robes flowing. He continues, “Now, you might be wondering how that’s possible? Well, my friend, allow me to explain. At this moment, you are the perfect specimen.” Palpatine leans closer to Anakin, “Your anger is magnificent but misguided.” He gestures at Anakin, “This blind rage has made your mind susceptible. All I have to do is make a minor adjustment to your mind,” Palpatine waves his hand, “and you are mine.”

Anakin collapses. Palpatine uses the Force and takes Anakin’s lightsaber hilt. The Emperor continues, “I’m sure your Jedi friends have told you the perils of the Dark side.” Palpatine helps Anakin to his feet, “I’ve lived with it for a long time. I can teach you how to accomplish this.”

“Your tremendous loss and embrace of the Dark side has forged a new person. Now, kneel.” As Anakin kneels, the Emperor ceremonially ignites the lightsaber and waves it over Anakin’s shoulders, “I dub thee Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith."

The Emperor extinguishes the lightsaber and hands it to Anakin, “You have work to do. The only threat to the Empire is the Jedi. Go. Wipe them out.”

Anakin complies, “Yes, my master.” A smile curls on Palpatine’s face.

Yoda boards his ship. He instructs Obi-wan to ensure with the Mustafar officials that the clones have sanctuary. Yoda will go on ahead to Alderaan. Obi-wan is to follow. Obi-Wan watches Yoda’s ship depart.

Obi-wan meets with the captain of the Mustafar guard outside the palace. The view of the canyon is impressive. The captain is appreciative of the clones’ assistance. He is the middle of an anecdote from the recent battle when he starts choking.

Obi-wan senses Anakin, “Anakin, what are you doing?”

Anakin emerges from the shadows, “This man’s incompetence is the reason my wife is dead.”

Obi-wan faces Anakin, “We came here because of your pride. Release him.”

Anakin continues, raising the captain off the ground using the Force, “You’re a fool. We’ve been puppets for the Republic. The Emperor has shown me the true nature of the Force.”

Obi-wan puts himself between the captain and Anakin, “Are you so sure who the puppet is? I can sense the conflict within you?”

The captain drops to the ground and exhales abruptly. Anakin ignites his lightsaber, “There is no conflict.”

Lightsabers clash as Anakin charges and Obi-wan defends himself. Obi-wan jumps from the precipice and lands on one of the many cliff ledges. Anakin follows. They continue to fight all down the cliff side.

Obi-wan lands on one of the ledges and implores to his friend, “The Dark side has poisoned your mind. Break free of it before it consumes you!”

Anakin appears torn, “I’ve lost everything. The Dark side has given me purpose again.”

Obi-wan pleads, “Turn away from the Dark side only that can save you.”

“You are the one who needs saving,” Anakin launches himself at Obi-wan and kicks him off the cliff.

Obi-wan falls and lands on a very small cliff ledge. Anakin somersaults to meet him. As Anakin prepares to land, Obi-wan slashes and cuts Anakin’s right arm at the elbow. The arm flies off one way. Anakin ricochets off the cliff side and heads toward the lava flow below. He is caught by one of the droids patrolling but not before his legs dip into the fire. They are incinerated up to the knee. The droid carries Anakin off.

Obi-wan follows the droid with his eyes as it heads off to the triage center. Obi-wan lands on the shore of the lava flow. Anakin’s lightsaber hilt is there. He squats down and picks it up. Obi-wan grasps the hilt tightly, bows his head, and sobs. He laments the loss of his friend.

Anakin is operated on by the droids. They repair the damage, replacing his arm and two legs with mechanical prosthetics. He is given a breathing apparatus. Anakin has passed out from the pain.

In a discreet section of the Organa palace, Yoda and Bail discuss the fate of the Skywalker progeny. They promised to the children’s dead mother to protect them. They watch a monitor of the twins playing in a makeshift nursery. Bail smiles as he reacts to his wife’s joy. Bail offers to raise both but Yoda stresses that if they are separated it would assure their safety. Bail shares that he always wanted a daughter. Yoda nods. When Bail asks about the boy, his comm whistles. A guard informs them that Obi-wan has landed.

Bail and Yoda greet Obi-wan. He is distraught, “Anakin is lost.” Obi-wan collapses from exhaustion. Bail orders his guards to carry the Jedi to the infirmary.

screen wipe

Obi-wan is sitting up in bed and just finished explaining what happened to Yoda. Yoda’s ears droop. Yoda says, “Warn the Jedi we must. Into hiding we must go. Seek us Anakin will.” A nurse enters holding a child. “A special task for you, I have. Anakin’s son, this is.”

Obi-wan smirks, “I’m not a wet nurse, Master.”

Yoda chuckles, “To his uncle on Tatooine take the boy. Be safe there, he should.” Yoda tells Obi-wan to guard from afar.

Obi-wan asks where Yoda will go. Yoda explains, “A place I barely escaped. Keep me hidden, the Dark Force explosion should. When the time is right, reveal my location, I will.”

Anakin sits at a workbench on Coruscant. He is constructing the suit.

A door slides open on the deck of an Imperial command center. Darth Vader enters, his breathing echoes through the area. The camera follows him as he makes his way to the main window. Tarkin and Palpatine are watching the initial construction of the Death Star.

To Mr. Lucas,

Thank you for considering me for the position of screenwriter. I am very honored and have endeavored to be conscious of the expectations of fans while preserving the mythos established by its creator.

Please find attached my first draft for each episode. I look forward to any input you provide. I fully understand as creator and director you have the final say on what appears on film.

Humbly yours,
frakkintalos

Mr. frakkintalos,

I have finished reading Episode I. I was hoping to show Anakin as a child prodigy and demigod, born of the Force, similar to Heracles. Also, I think it’s important to established the Jedi Knights and the Republic in their glory. You have started the Clone wars too quickly. Perhaps you could establish a conflict that Palpatine has engineered, like a trade dispute or blockade and have the Jedi dispatched to handle it. We need to make this film kid-friendly so a new generation can share in the magic of Star Wars. Can you provide a character that would be appealing to children? A bumbling fool that could be the hero at the end of the film.

I look forward to seeing your revision in two weeks.

George Lucas

June 30, 1994

Mr. Lucas,

Thank you for your input. I really appreciate it. However, allow me to address each of your points and defend my vision.

Firstly, “born of the Force”?? I’m sorry. Did I miss something from the trilogy? When did the Force acquire genitalia? The Force was established as an impartial mechanism, open to the Light and Dark side. If we establish it with a purpose and will, are we going to get involved in prophecy as well? That can tend to get preachy and pontificating. This is Star Wars. It’s supposed to be fun!

“Republic and Jedi in their glory” – I can work with that. Yet I think if we are heading toward their demise I think it’s important to establish that early. It’s more plausible.

“Trade blockade” – ??? Have the great and honored Jedi warriors delegated to traffic duty?

“kid-friendly” – I totally understand. We have to sell those toys, right? At the same time, we already have an established adult audience. Star Wars appeals to the child in everyone. Do you voice this criticsm because you feel I have not captured the appeal of the original films?

“A bumbling fool” – If you’re not taking this seriously, how do you expect the fanbase to?

Please excuse my sarcasm. I’m just concerned since you have totally ignored my premise. Was there anything you liked?

Mr. McCallum,

Recently, I submitted a treatise for the Star Wars prequels. Upon review, Mr. Lucas fired me. Attached you will find our correspondence.

As executive producer, I would like to hear your professional opinion of the treatise. Although it is a very rough draft, I believe it captures the appeal of the original films while addressing the fall of Anakin Skywalker.

Mr. frakkintalos,

Thank you for your submission. My opinion is of no significance. George has final say on all potential scripts.

If you had just done exactly what George asked, you would still have a job. There’s a saying around here, never question George.

Mr. McCallum,

Never question George? Have you seen Howard the Duck?

To be honest, that statement doesn’t bother me as much as your refusal to even give it a read. What do they pay you for? To just nod and yes George.

By the Force, man! Grow a pair. Your name is going to be associated with these films and yet your opinion is of no significance?

Dear Mr. Frakkintalos

I was visiting George last weekend and I noticed a script with Star Wars in the title. I asked George if I could read it. He explained what went down between the two of you. That was foolish on your part.

Anyway, allow me to be blunt. Your script was pitiful. Where did you learn to write? I’ve met seven-year-old children that possess a better grasp of the English language. I’ll grant that this is a first draft. However, you were hired to be the screenwriter for the biggest franchise in movie history and you hand in this dreg!?! Did you put this together during your free time?

Anakin turns to the Dark Side via brainwashing. Really? How well do you think that is going to play out onscreen? Your hero can’t just show up at the Emperor’s door and poof He’s Darth Vader. Where are the moments of temptation?

Here, take my advice. Don’t quit your day job.
