What do I need to know going into the new movie?

Why? Gene Roddenberry was the creator & executive producer and ALL the original cast did the voices. Many of the original writers were involved, too.

Oh, you’re on of those people who are too dependent on F/X to let the story get in the way. My advice to you is to stay away from Shakespeare, too.

I have not seen the animated series in some time but as I remember it, it was fantastic. The format gave more freedom to the story lines since makeup and sets were not a limiting factor. I think that the hollowdeck was introduced in the animated. If it was not for politics the full cast would have been on the show.

I think it’s an age thing. I was still pissed off that TOS had been cancelled, and now I was being served with “cartoons” (I know, I know). That and the animation did not really give Shat a proper opportunity to “emote”.

This is exactly what I was saying about the miscasting. Most of the actors look like younger versions of the originals. Then we have Pegg. Too thin too receding hair line and chin. And we get lines of dialog that look like a Caricature of Scotty. I want the Scotty from TOS. The Miracle Worker with a fully charged phaser at the ready. Not this tripe.

I said this before, so I apologize for those who heard me say this a zillion times.
The Alan Dean Foster novelizations of the Star Trek Animated Series episodes are great. They’re great because they’re really good stories, and because you can visualize it in your head the way you want it—so it ain’t animated when you read it. And since I read them BEFORE I saw (or even knew of) the animated series, they were live action episodes in my head as I read 'em.

Yeah, when I see the Simon Pegg characterization of Scotty, I get this awful sinking feeling that J.J. Abrahms went back and watched all the star trek movies, but didn’t bother with the TV show. I’m probably wrong about that. I hope I’m wrong.

Need to read - stipulated.

So, Old Timer and I must be the same age.
Now when I see that avatar, I think of …me.

So Cody, have a great time with this movie. It should be just right for you to enjoy since you are still minus the baggage the TOS watchers (like me) carry around.

For the record, Kirk, Spock and McCoy look great (much more like I always reimagined them in my minds eye.)

I don’t read books unless they have full-color pictures, either.

The fold-out kind? Those are my faves…

Bwahahaaa!!

I do not think we are so different in age. I am still watching cartoons. The Star Wars “Cartoon” is great.

Oh I feel like we need an IYKWIM here.

Generally, I don’t photograph as well as in the avatar.

Then it’s probably also an anger management thing (with me) then.

When was the last time you saw TAS? I found it charming after (I don’t want think about how many) years.

OK - let me clear this up. I completely buy all that everybody has to say about TAS (including the book versions) and I seem to have short changed myself by watching very few (although I did catch the one with Adm. April). The books seem to be the way to go - at this point.

I am criticizing my own reaction (I’ll be damned if I’ll watch a damn Star Trek cartoon after those damn morons cancelled the best damn show ever). (Do you realize how many weeks of 25 cents a week allowances it took to buy the first run model of Enterprise - at the now long gone Woolworth’s on Front St. in Worcester, Mass.? When I saw it on the shelf I COULD NOT BELIEVE MY EYES.)

Also, by '73-'74 I was in college and was distracted by other “things”. With the benefit of hindsight, I would have been better off on several fronts had I dedicated my time to TAS.

Embrace it. (Although be aware that, per Sturgeon’s Law, there are a couple of Spock’s Brains lurking there.)

Wow, reading this is like TheForce.net’s boards circa 1999 all over again :stuck_out_tongue:

Personally, I’m really looking forward to this movie. I’m only just starting to get into Star Trek after a very negative association from my childhood (watching those horrible earworms from Wrath of Khan crawl in and out of ears while convinced my mom was going to die = not the best thing ever), and between the Star Trek arc of the podcasts and my husband and I watching TNG from the beginning, I’m getting more and more interested in the characters and the universe. I’m kind of glad that I’ve only seen a couple of the movies (1, 2, 4, 6, and the TNG ones, all several years back) since it means I go in to this one with fresh eyes.

That said, part of me wishes I was an old guard Trek fan, just so I could get maximum entertainment out of fandom exploding. But I’m weird like that.
