What do I need to know going into the new movie?

At least Capt. Pike is in it. And as the ship’s first captain I believe.

Wonder how things are going to work out for him?

If that is handled correctly, I can put up with a lot. That story line is essential to the mythos. They don’t get to frak with that.

It’s funny how things get “seared” in your mind. When I watched those 2 episodes at age 13 (first run, on a black and white TV, with rabbit ears and a snowy picture) that was it for me. I had already been hooked, but I remember thinking “this is the frakkin’ greatest show ever” - except I didn’t think “frakkin” or any other 4 letter word for that matter. It was a simpler time.

I may have used the term “radical” in my youth. Which pretty much dates my youth. to a specific time.

I thinks this is their thinking entirely. Screw the core they will show whether or not. Errr SORRY!!! Anyone one remember Superman Returns. That thing was such a bomb Marc Singer was nearly ridden out on a rail. And that was being kind to him. The same people they thought would see it didn’t. Many of the reasons are the same that are troubling the new Trek film. Canon violations. Small one people can forgive others are just WTF. Same as in SR. People were apoplectic when they heard that Supes had a son with Lois. What happened people stayed away. I won’t go into the number of changes they did in the new movie. It’s been documented too many places for me to go into.

Then just as in SR they screwed up the casting. Neither the ones playing Lois or Clark were good at all. The guy that Lois was dating in the movie was more interesting. (Heck he was good in Xmen to.) Now we have the New Trek. Some of the cast seems fine. Then there are choices they make that I just cry at. JJ totally botched the casting on Scotty. I’m not saying they had to get an identical twin of Jimmy Doohan. What they settled on is one of the worst jokes being played on the fan base. Simon Pegg may be a fine comedian, he is totally miscast in this role. I was willing to hold my nose and live through watching him. Then I saw the trailer where we get to hear him speak. If I didn’t need the laptop so much it would have been chucked out the nearest window after that.

Lets just say this film is not and has intentionally not been made with the fans in mind. And it’s a shame it could have been even greater.

No happy place for me, where’d I place that phaser rifle.

I think Pegg will surprise you. He’s got surprisingly good range.

That was just about my favorite casting choice. I’m surprised more people aren’t vexed that Sylar is Spock, since QUinto is Sylar already to so many people.

I’m still on the fence about Pegg, but we’ve seen very little of him. Quinto was on pretty much everyone’s short list for Spock. Urban is the biggest surprise for me, he has McCoy down pat.

He looks awesome!
The facial epressions and everything are really werid but also cool.

I’ve been waiting for someone to ask for a phaser rifle.
Here you go:

In retrospect the reboot makes the most sense. As much as I’d like to see the continuing stories of TNG or DS9, I have to admit that TOS is much more cinematic. Focusing on three main characters it much better for a movie, than having the larger (and deeper) casts of the later shows. TNG and DS9 get a little bulky for 2 hour movies. Some (including the cast I think) began to complain that the TNG movies were pretty much the Picard and Data show. Also, the swashbuckling Kirk is a better movie action hero than the introspective Jean-Luc or the brooding Ben Sisco, however those two characters could be more interesting to watch over 7 seasons of TV. Yes, First Contact was great and action packed, but it doesn’t really represent what I loved most about TNG.

So what are we left with once the TOS actors are 40 years older (or deceased)? A reboot with younger and prettier actors. The basic question I have that will be answered by the movie is are Kirk, Spock and McCoy such great characters that they can transcend the actors that play them? If so, we may have a great movie; if not, then it’s $10 and two hours down the drain…

My eyes passed Kirtland a bit to fast and thought it said Kirkland. I wonder if the inventor like ST much?

“I’m rally surprised that they couldn’t get Courtney Thorne-Smith or Billy Shue to round out the cast of Star Trek 90210.”

That what you were looking for?

Trying to keep the flames low, but what’s hard about watching TOS?

If you saw Quinto and Nemoy together you would think they were grandfather and grandson. That is even without the makeup. I saw the announcement that the were both going to be in the movie. Standing side by side you would be amazed. Quinto when he goes into his quiet moments as Sylar he always seemed to need pointy ears to me.

I watched the movies, right, and I mostly liked them. TMP was a trying effort at times, but II and III were pretty good, IV was great, and I even thought V and VI were fair.

TOS is just too old for me. I can’t suspend disbelief enough to enjoy it.

And I do think that Quinto looks startlingly appropriate as Spock; I’m just hoping he’s good enough to make me forget Heroes.

Second, I hope. (The first was Cpt. April, seen in TAS.)

He’s only slightly exaggerating McCoy/Kelly. Since he’s younger and less mellowed that seems appropriate.

Of all the ones I’ve seen, only Pegg seems off. Not bad, necessarily, but I’m not getting Doohan’s Scotty from what little I’ve seen of him (although I hear that Chris Doohan thinks he’s great.)

OTOH, there is a bit in the script that seems to be a direct homage to Doohan’s WWII service, which I like.

I used to know that. But I’ve always had doubts about recognizing the legitimacy of TAS.

I say good choice and he is a great actor.

This is for Pike,

is it just me, or do you feel that Dohann’s Scotty in TOS is a different character than little fat Scotty in the movies ( and let’s don’t mention the TNG episode).

I REALLY hate the goofy scotty. I like the mellow brooding Scotty that is left with the con while Kirk and Spock are away. The “put our Romulan guests in the brig” Scotty. I don’t care for the talking into the mouse scotty, or the hitting my head in falling unconcious Scotty.

Scotty makes a few one liners… but is a serious character in TOS. He only acts goofy the one time in Day of the Dove… when he is being manipulated. And that’s just a little goofy when he get’s giddy over finding the Scotish sword.

That’s an excellent point. I don’t watch the movies (aside from II) much, so I haven’t really thought about it, but you’re right. Scotty is much more of a badass in TOS (and even TAS.)

I think that’s what’s irking me about Pegg. He seems more like the movie Scotty. (And again, I’ve heard all of what? Two lines of dialog? Well, that and some clowning around with water pipes…)

I agree entirely

so my little anecdote: The first time I remember seeing Scotty (meaning when I was seeking out Trek on my own rather than passively having it on the background) was in that TNG episode, and I have to admit that when watching TOS recently with GWCers I didn’t recognize the character for 2 or 3 episodes.

you would never watch a trek movie and see THAT Scotty and think, “When Kirk and Spock are gone… he should be in charge” You would think he wouldn’t even know how to command. In TOS , you have no doubt.

I blame the whale movie. The writers didn’t really understand subtle humor from that point forward. They resorted to jokes, and scotty became a near fool if he wasn’t actually in the engine room. Well to be fair, he was still Scotty in 1 and 2. He was close in 3.
In ST: 4,5,6 … he was a joke. It pains me cause I love Jimmy. It wasn’t his fault… he has to deliver the lines as directed. I thought that the TNG episode made him out to be a fool. Watch the episode Whom God’s Destroy. There you will see the “real” Scotty.

Movie Scotty is the Gimli of Star Trek.
