What do I need to know going into the new movie?

Ya know, this really isn’t fair. I happen to adore watching Shakespeare. Yet I have a hard time watching the modern “Romeo & Juliet”.

I also have the same problem with TOS as the person this was aimed at. For the record I’m 39, I’m used to bad props & CG, yet the older I get the m,ore distracting it is.

It’s also much easier to create the past with a low budget than a futuristic show. Invariably the “future”: envisioned looks hopelessly dated, 30 years later.

That said, I am cautiously optimistic about this new movie. ANd, yes, this is trikingly similar to Star Wars groups when Phantom Menace was announced.

Hrm.

I think, at this point, you have to take TOS the same way you take H.G. Wells, or Buck Rogers (the original (oh gods, and the remake at this point.) It’s not so much a vision of the future, but a vision of the past’s vision of the future.

Also, all the comparisons to SW fans’ fears about Phantom Menace don’t settle my fears any. (On account of PM sucking. With loud, slurping sounds)

That said, I’m cautiously optimistic about XI. Aside from Pegg, the actors seem to have nailed their parts. All that’s left is the story itself, and people I trust tell me it’s ossim.

I completely agree with you, Pike, on taking TOS as it is. My point is, sometimes seeing the zipper just throws you off, regardless of your intentions.

The Phantom Menace is so bad I have a really hard time ever watching it. It’s only redeeming factor is that I’m sure my son will like it when he’s young enough to relate to young Anakin Skywalker.

I liked TPM :frowning: Definitely the weakest of the movies, but it had an awesome lightsaber fight, Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson as Jedi, Darth Maul, and my favorite song ever (Duel of the Fates). Plus, I have all the happy memories of my mom pulling me out of school early to go see it, and having a lightsaber fight with her in front of the movie theater while we waited in hundred-something degree heat for the line to finally start moving.

In any case, it sounds like the vast majority of the consensus coming out of the surprise screening(s) they did is positive. Personally, I’m going in with no expectations other than “Pretty!” It’s kind of my policy with every movie, and I’m usually not let down (cough Dungeons and Dragons cough).

I liked it too… you guys might enjoy going back and reading some of the threads from the Star Wars arc last summer (2008)

RAAAAAAAAARRR!!! The Phantom Menace was craaaaaapppp!!!
