That was the main push for Voyager to get away from the races of the Alpha Quadrant (Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans, etc.) Away from politics (DS9) and back to exploring and stuff. But as you’ll see they get very confused about what they are trying to accomplish (the writing staff, that is). Of all the series, this one seems like the one most influenced by the suits.
So I’m in the middle of watching “Flashback,” but wow, I LOVE that Tuvok was on Sulu’s crew. That was awesome. As was Janeway’s discussion with Kim re: Starfleet of the past.
that as by design. With DS9 out there, a lot of Trek fans were unhappy about the format change (despite how many of us who loves DS9 today), so they wanted to make a Trek show more like the old Trek shows. They especially wanted Janeway to be more like Captain Kirk.
Ok, I think Star Trek is in deep trouble if every new show they want the captain to be more like Kirk. Jeri Taylor said she wanted Janeway to be more like Kirk. Then on Enterprise they wanted Ardcher to be more like Kirk. And on the new movie they brought back Kirk… I mean, I love Star Trek… but am I the only one who thinks there’s a problem when all they want is to recreate Kirk?
the Kazon and Vidiian stories are largely going to be a thing of the past in coming seasons. But Season 3 is AWESOME. You will definitely love it.
No. You’re not. This is the pitfall of all “child” series. But it wasn’t only Kirk. There’s Spock (Data/Seven) McCoy (Pulaski/Doctor). These are archetypes, though. Kinda hard to avoid. I kringe (Klingon cringe) when I hear “re-create Kirk”. Since Kirk is Hornblower and Alexander the Great; an adventurer and hero. You wonder when someone says “recreate Kirk” what they mean exacT-ly.
Yeah, I said what I said about recreating Kirk after listening to an old Scifi-Talk interview of Jeri Taylor from when Voyager was still in season 3. She said she wanted to do away with the moral dilemma and philosophical stories on Voyager, and have more action packed stories, since she wanted Janeway to be more like Kirk from the start…
That just killed me… I’d say even though Jeri left by season 4, Brannon Braga carried this mission very well, and that was pretty much the direction of Season 6 and 7.
I agree that archetypes are bound to happen. But in TNG the captain wasn’t intended to be like Kirk, and it was still a great show.
perhaps instead of trying to make every Captain of all new series more like Kirk, they should mix the arch-types around. Maybe have a Kirk-like number one (wait, is that what Riker is supposed to be?)
I mean, I’d like to see all the conflict that comes out of a Kirkish character who doesn’t get to call the shots. That might be more interesting than another captain Kirk…
Wait 'til the catsuit. 'talos dreams Ah…the catsuit. Talk about taking you outta the show. There were moments when Seven walked down the corridor and the camera followed her. I completely forgot what was going on in the episode. Totally distracting.
When Chuck was talking about the first episode of ‘Stargate’ in this week’s 'cast #183, with the boobs and it being a bad thing. I totally thot of Seven of Nine. There is a time and place for all things. There is a time for boobies and a time for Star Trek.
I can’t believe I am writeing this… .but I agree. As much as I loved looking at her… it did take away from her character and the story. If an acatress is hot ( like Jadzia from ds9) the standerd Starfleet uniform ( or something simular) will show that. Ferral is a hot enough woman that they didn’t need to “pimp my Borg” up to make her hot. We get it, she’s hot… the extra boobage and makeup aren’t needed! I feel like I need to turn my “man card” in for saying this… but she didn’t make for good trek! I do like her character… but the fact that she is a Spock-ish super character get’s old fast!
enjoy season 4, some of my personal favorites are in season 4. Especially the one that featured Chakotay. I can’t say enough good things about that episode. It really showed us what kind of a person Chakotay is.
It explored a very serious current issue in the style of great scifi. It has deep impact and Chakotay didn’t just dust himself off and say… “oh well”, and then walk away. At least not at the end of the episode anyway…
It seems like I am in the minority here but I never had a problem with Seven of Nine; I thought she was gorgeous obviously but it never got ‘distracting.’ I watched Voyager for the adventure, not the boobage. Strangely enough, I was in high school when Voyager aired. Maybe I should have been distracted?
