True. And if I understand the casting, Sean-o-the-dead/Scotty will also be able to fight zombies should they happen to beam aboard the ship.
Ryan Church defends Enterprise design
New Star Trek movie production designer Ryan Church, the designer of the new starship Enterprise NCC 1701, posted the following message at TrekMovie.com comments forum, responding from the criticism of some fans regarding his new design. Here is his message :
“I’m not going to get involved in the mud slinging, here, but needed to assure you guys and gals: we’ve built you a fine ship.” Church wrote at TrekMovie forum “To clarify: there’s a slight optical illusion occurring here, consequence of the “camera” angle. For Rick [Sternbach] and others who worry the nacelles don’t have a clear line of sight over the disc - they, in fact, do. We were hardly working in a vacuum. I raided ILM reference photos like a madman. We were deferential to “inviolates” of Star Trek design vocabulary. Additionally, the profile here isn’t 100% representative, because, as you’ve noticed, the Bussards are dimmed. The true profile of the nacelles may or may not be revealed here, and that’s all I’ll say.”
'talos thanks for sharing
I like Trek - a lot, I mean, I make references and jokes about it… which then go over people’s heads. You would think more grad school people would be into Trek…
But now I’m intrigued to see more pics of the ship.
Oddly, I have seen that before.
Full resolution here.
That an image in the Ships of the Line calendar from 2007!
Even stranger, I remember somone on a different message board using this as an example of what the new enterprise could look like soon after the movie was announced.
According to this page it was an “alternate Constitution-class design that was one of the purposes refit schemes for the class, ultimately rejected in favour of the more familiar TOS movie-era design.”
Not exactly the same, but very close.
I think the 1st real trailer is supposed to be out today.
I’m looking for it…
Here a description of the clips at least (Warning spoilers):

“There she is! There she is! Not so wounded as we were lead to believe. So much the better.”
Uh oh. She’s in trouble now.
Look - let’s cut to the chase here. Take it from a guy that watched TOS, first run, black and white on a TV with rabbit ears and a snowy picture - the new Enterprise is not the Enterprise - it’s craaaaap. It looks like a technologically advanced ice cream scoop in space.
They could have had “this” (above), or something like it, a ship of war and exploration, been true to TOS yet updated. Instead they design a 1959 Cadillac clone. Brother. Well, when the movie falls flat they can sell the models to whomever is going to make the big screen version of Babylon Five.
I had those mini models when I was a kid! They came with a Romulan Warbird as well, right?
Oh. And what OT said.
I kinda regret reading the spoilers at the link above, but I couldn’t help myself. A couple things made me cringe a bit.
Like the Romulan’s attacking the planet Vulcan…I mean that’s kinda like the Chineese Army today attacking Colorado…I’m pretty sure they’d have to get through quite a bit of defenses to get that far into U.S. Territory.
Yeah, or the Cylons attacking Caprica without dealing with the other Colonies as well.
Yeah. The Warbird is home. These are in the office. I spend more time there
Well - yes and no.
First of all, your argument makes a lot of sense, but on the one hand, the Federation wasn’t as old and established during Kirk’s days as it was later on in DS9 or so and even then the Dominion got as far as Betazed! Also, I think we can’t think in terms of armies and land wars in this case, we must think navies and spaceships that can access very large areas of open space, especially Romulan ships with cloaking devices!
And on the other hand, we KNOW FOR A FACT that a Federation-Romulan War happened at same point in the 23rd century. It’s one of the most interesting eras in Federation history, in my opinion, but one that has never been elaborated upon a lot. So I’m actually very glad to see that they’re finally dealing with this war.

Eeh, I don’t buy it. And the FACTs, as set by the episode Balance of Terror happened decades before Kirks time. In that Federation/Romulan war neither side saw what each other looked like.
All that said, I’ve accepted that this ‘reboot’ of star trek doesn’t intend to follow trek canon. But I do wish they’d be …well, logical about things. Attacking so deep in Federation space as to attack Vulcan is an insane move for the Romulans away. Well, I suppose there is the cloaking device…I dunno.
Hoooray! I see on http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TOS/index.html that they refer to Bill Shatner as the “The Shat”. I love it!!
Now tell me, and these little models? Are are these the big 14 inch long models of the Enterprise that AMT used to sell back when I was 10 years old?
Unfortunately when I was 12 I took all those models and lit 'em on fire and melted them. (that’s what 12 year old boys do!!). I had the Enterprise, the Klingon D7, the Romulan Bird of Prey, the Enterprise Bridge, the Phaser, The Tricoder, the Communicator…Those AMT models were awesome!!
That statement is exactly why I wished they’d have gone forward not backward. Trek was and should be about going forward. How cool would it be if by the 25th century the Federation had become similar to the Borg (forcing its views and ideals on the galaxy) and now rebels from all races must destroy it to preserve freedom? What would the holo-doctor evolve into or Data for that matter? Would humanity integrate that tech into its makeup?
Instead they decide to introduce a new generation to something already chronicled. It’s new “New Tide”!! Repackaged and polished. I ain’t hatin’. I like Tide. It gets me underoos clean. Repackaged Trek I hope will feed me fix.
For me the essence of Trek is that as a race even with all our turmoil, we’ve survived. We battle our inner demons, suffer pain, and grow stronger from the struggle. Our heroes are flawed but try to make the “right” decisions. A maniacal computer with a god complex that is susceptible to circular logic helps.
Nope. These are the micro-machine versions. They be tiny.
That’s probably best. I would have been a bit shocked (yet proud) of your boldness if you brought the big ones into work.
If I had 'em, they’d be there.
