The new USS Enterprise!

My Gods GR, take it easy on the guy…you can’t just come out with something like that !

Frakk, it’s ok. The movie will be just fine. You’ll go see it and love it, ok? Take a few deep breaths. There ya go, pal. Unclench the fists…ok, good.

Now I’m gonna need to back up that statement a little, right?

Well, first of all, it’s a prequel - even worse, it’s more like a reboot, actually. They seldomly work out right.

Second, the original Trek crew are icons of pop culture, they’re the gods throning upon the Olymp of science fiction. Replacing them with new faces is at least going to be weird. But I’m willing to concede here because it seems like they assembled a good cast and because they’re bringing back the miniskirts and Uhura is hot.

Thirdly, I doubt that JJ Abrams can capture the spirit of Star Trek. As far as I know, he’s always saying that he hardly saw any Trek. Which reminds me quite a lot of Robert Wise, who also thought he could direct a Star Trek movie without having seen ALL OF IT ON TV. The end result? Star Trek The Motion Picture. I think it’s blatantly arrogant of Abrams to ditch all the stuff that came before. He at least should take the time to watch the TV series over and over again.
In the same vein, I just think that this movie is going to turn me away from Trek forever. If this movie fails, Trek will be dead. And by failing I don’t mean box office success, I mean the question whether Star Trek can still stand out among its scifi peers. Star Trek always used to tower over other merchandises because the people who were making it - and its fans! - cared for it in a totally unique way. Star Trek used to be special, real special. And my big fear is that this movie might turn Trek into just another meaningless mainstream-action-scifi-mishmash of stunt scenes and effect shots WITHOUT ANY MESSAGE.

I totally agree.

I’m so torn. I think the new ship’s kinda pretty but slightly cartoony (to borrow Solai’s apt choice of word), and I’m hoping that a reboot will actually be just what Star Trek needs and not instead a slap in its legendary face. I don’t completely trust J.J. Abrams; he’s a creative guy, but he doesn’t always bat a thousand (LOST is what it is because of Darlton, not J.J.). But I’m staying optimistic for now. I just have to, or else I’ll want to jump off a cliff.

The new ship is very pretty.

Maybe since the Star Trek I like best isn’t TOS, I’m not so particular about the ship. I find this one to be more aesthetically pleasing.

And it’s interesting that (unless I’m misremembering someone’s identified gender) the 2 women who have commented (I’m including myself) like the ship. hmmmmmmm…

And my husband actually just sent this my way (“The Evolution of the USS Enterprise”)… even though he thinks Trek is kind of silly. Love him anyways…

Nice post. I kind of like the new Enterprise too. But then again my favorite is still E even given the Galaxy class’s extremely unstable warp cores.

Wasn’t it stated that there were 6 Galaxy class ships stated at some point in TNG? Kind of a shame that 3 of them were destroyed within 10 years. Comfy, pretty and can put up a good fight, but still not very stable core-wise…

I don’t think you mean that. You’ll always have Kirk, Picard, and Sisko to enjoy Trek. That love can never die.

SISKO!!

And I go…

I like the redo of the Enterprise.
Maybe its just a generational thing but I never felt the original looked very believable, even for a model. This new one seems a bit more realistic.

It wasn’t the original model itself that was the problem but rather that they didn’t have the technical means yet to believably make it fly in space or orbit a planet.

The original is an icon, though. Instantly recognizable. All around the globe. This new one isn’t. Will never be.

:eek::eek: See ?? I rest my case.

Of course the girls like it. Look at the arm muscles on that guy!

Thank you for sharing. For some interesting humor reading…definitely look at the comments. People take Trek REALLY seriously.

OK, quick thoughts:

  1. Love the saucer
  2. Don’t mind the changes on the lower hull
  3. HATE the new engines.

Waiting to see more views now. And trying to figure out if it has “movie era” torpedo tubes (above engineering) or TOS torpedoes (up in the saucer)

I don’t mind the outside of the engines. It’s the insides that bother me.
I mean, the design is all wacky. The matter-antimatter mix chamber is much too wide and too close to the Jeffries Tube. And whose stupid idea was it to leave out the teriiary back up controls for the dilthium crystal alignment arms? It’s just weird. And please tell me how in FRAK’s sake they expect to generate and stable warp field when the break the speed-of-light barrier with those poorly situated field generators? Can anyone answer me that!!??

I am such a geek.

Solai Thot

Acknowledging the problem is always the first step my friend. Stick that in your jeffries tube and smoke it.

I dunno ya’ll I love it. It’s updated without being overdone and the new engines lend it a “fresh” quality that doesn’t get in the way of the original vibe. Also the texture of the skin and lighting have been greatly improved.

All around I’d say they did a great job without going over the top.

Yes, but how the FRAK are they gonna break Warp 7 with the buzzard collectors all misaligned and the power couplings so thin! It’s a mess I tell ya. A mess!!

Nah, Scotty’ll fix it man. Relax, give him 30 seconds and some chewing gum and they could make warp 12 if they felt like it.

I’ve thought about it in great detail and found two reasons why the new Star Trek movie may not be that bad after all.
