Star Trek XI (Spoilers)

That’s what I heard, too.

I only watched the first hour of this monstrosity so far. Since I hate being crammed in with the smelly masses and overcharged for tickets and popcorn, I downloaded a screen cam version off BT. Now I know what it’s like to be inside the head of a person with ADD. It’s a noisy mishmash of incoherant sound and images with no scene lasting much more than a few seconds before bobbing to something more shiny. Much like this movie.

Much has been said about the alternate timeline in order to escape the changes in Cannon. That does NOT explain how they made all the characters the same frakking age! In the original series, Bones was around 50, Kirk was mid 30’s (in the courtmarshall ep he stated his age as 34), Sulu and Chekov were in their early to mid 20’s. No amount of Plotonium or timeline meddling can change that.

I also couldn’t get the image of Sylar out of mind when seeing Quinto as Spock. He has a good physical resemblance, but I kept expecting him to point his finger at someone and slice off the top of their heads.

I’m glad I didn’t pay any money for this failed reboot, but I fail to see how Chuck Audra and Sean could be so enthusiastic about it. To me it’s total crap and I hope the next director does better or else the new Star Trek is dead to me.

My mom was a bra burning 60’s type and loved Star Trek. I don’t remember a single woman looseing her mind at the beggining of every episode of “real” trek. If any of you do remember women who hated the show over that, let me know… I love to learn new things.

And “man” ( I can’t believe i am about to explain this on a sci-fi forum) is also one of the words that we use to mean the human race. It happens to be one of the many english nouns that have two meanings. Do you really think Roddenberry put “man” in Kirks time to make sure that we knew that only men were exploreing and women just were yomen, comms officers, and nurses? I think not, He was useing it the “Man has always strived to further knowledge…” sense, or in the case of Planet of the apes “beware the beast man… he kills for…” It’s just english language, as it has been for years. Every eduacated english speaker knows that women are not excluded in this language. One would have to try to be offended at this speech. It’s not hateful, and doesn’t belittle women to use the word for the human race that also could be used for gender.

We almost had a woman president, who’s now Sec. of State. ( BTW 3 of our last 4 secs of state have been women) and I work for a Female Army Colonial who makes the same amount of money and has the same power as her male conterpart. I don’t think ladies are being held back too much these days.

Well I wasn’t talking about you guys, or singleing you out… I am just talking about the nameless masses whom I am waiting to b#tch about this. There are always those types that can’t just watch a great moment in TV history and like it, they have to figure out a way to bitch or otherwise put importance ( past simple entertainment) on a frakin TV show. But I have always been a huge trek fan because of the story’s and adventure and have never understood the people ( and I am not name calling you guys out or saying that this is you guys- I sincerly hope that this isn’t you guys)who seek something more from trek than a good story. The hopeless iindividuals who wear Starfleet uniforms to jury duty or loose their mind if a new Trek comes out and they don’t feel the producers have went out o their way to represent “tahitian handicapped psycic scientologists” as a member of the new crew. I understand that 40 years ago in the south things were bad, and uhura was a breakthru. But that’s all fixed. Uhura is a great member of the new cast and nobodys thinking about how black she is… just how hot she is!!! If you want to change the world, watch PBS and listen to NPR. If Star Trek is going to survive, it’s going to have to embrace “good trek” which is Kirks era of adventure and action and not wimpy old baldmen who rerly fight and drink tea.

And on the subject of Picard’s wimpy dorky series. Useing it in any discussion doesn’t really count as most normal americans never watched his show at all. However, nearly all americans over the age of 30 have at least knowledge of who the old trek guys are. If Picard’s hippy love fest show was any match for the Kirk’s… there would have been a movie after nemisis or a next gen reboot. Instead they scraped that whole inferior portion of the universe. ( you know that the studio will never revisit Next Gen. They will claim that it is “too confuseing for audiances”. So useing next gen in any discussion is pretty pointless. Only shows with captains from North America count from this point on!.

And now for my 2 cents…

I really enjoyed this movie…But…

I think the Writers did a great job giving us a reboot that gives a lot of room for more stories without having "cannon’ get in the way… Kudo to the writers!

I think the casting was Dead on! All of these actor did a fantastic job with roles, and I had no trouble accepting them as these charaters…(kudos to the writers again!)

I think the scene designer did an outstanding job…(except for the willie wonka water tubes.) (oh, the Tribble is on the Desk behind Scotty during the first conversation with Kirk and spock. in a little cage)

My issues with this movie are ALL on the DIRECTOR! J.J. Abrams couldn’t tell a story with film if his life depended on it.

he has subsittuted lens flares, and fast cuts for Style or any actual ability. I don’t want anything to remind me that I am watching through a lens. I want to get lost in the story.

His inablilty to show action in an understandable way, really hurt the telling of this story. (and it was still a good story…Kudos to the writers again.)
the fact that this was a good movie and entertaining was in spite of the director not because of him.

Again, I enjoyed this movie. More then i thought i would. I really thought I would have trouble seeing new actors as these characters, but I am happy to say i look forward to the next movie.

To answer some other things from this forum…

I can write off the randomness of “running into” spock prime as the ‘the universe trying to restore the proper time line itself’, as well as the randomness of running into Scotty a few minutes later.
I can suspend my disbelief for those kind of things.

Spock did say to Kirk at the beginning of Wrath of Kahn “as i recall you took the test 3 times yourself, your finale solution was, shall we say, unique.”
Perhaps the Cadet’s are allowed to retake the test until they realize what a now win senario looks like.

to explain…(no that will take to long) to sum up…
I love the movie, I just think a better director would have elevated it to legendary levels.

side note… did anyone else feel old when you realized the Wynona Ryder was Spocks Mom?

“Buckle up!” and “live long, and Prosper”

Hrmm. I may have to withdraw that complaint after a review.

Although, that just transfers the complaint to TWOK…

No i don’t think you have to withdraw your complaint. we were presented with the same facts in Wrath of Kahn, and Nobody had an issue with it. the difference is Myer vs Abrams… it wasn’t what we were told, but how we were told. and just an observation.

Pike… i thought you might catch the “princess bride” reference in my post.

Fair point. A mention doesn’t carry nearly the weight as seeing, e.g., Uhura in the chair for what is obviously the third time.

Pike… i thought you might catch the “princess bride” reference in my post.

Damn, I just saw that again a few days ago and I’m still missing it.

Inconceivable!

From Memory-Alpha: George Samuel Kirk was to appear in 2009’s Star Trek, where he would have been played by Spencer Daniels. Scenes featuring Daniels as Sam Kirk were filmed, but the character was entirely cut from the final release. The one remaining scene of Daniels playing Sam Kirk, in which Jim Kirk calls out to him as he’s driving past him in their step-father’s corvette, was altered to change the name of Daniels’ character to “Johnny”, apparently a friend of Jim’s.

Makes a bit more sense since George Kirk was the older brother.

To be fair, I have Nits of Enormous Size.

Nits of Enormous Size? I don’t think they exist.

[::tackle::]

Just found a list of 5 things you may have missed in Star Trek link I knew Slush-o rang a bell.

I see your five and raise you eleven.

Your list goes to 11! Right across the board…11, 11, 11…

“why 11? why not just make 10 louder?”

“…cause, it’s 11!”

Nicely played, sirs. I was laughing so hard, I almost tripped over the miniature stonehenge on the floor.

well that’s just…odd

Ok, so a random question from a Trek ignoramus. You know how most space Sci-fi shows/movies just conveniently never address the question of why aliens all speak English? I know most people just accept it as necessary theatrical device to make the stories work and move on. And no one ever even bothered to give a plausible explanation for it except Douglas Adams… and I’m fine with that.

If I remember correctly, I think in Trek-verse, there was a pseudo explanation for it? Like a universal translator or something… so that Klingons, humans, Vulcans et al. can all talk to one another. Or something like that. Am I remembering this correctly? Can someone explain to me how it translates every language in the universe except Russian accents?

if ii rememeber correctly, the Universal translator turned all language into “Basic” which was pretty much english. Tho it had to be pretty basic english cuz when KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN woke up in “Space Seed” he said to McCoy “English, I only thought I heard it” (or something like that).

So in essence the UT takes the langauage and translates it to English. And since teh UTs were “inwented in Russia” it allows that accent and ONLY that accent to come through.

Does that make you a dwarf?

So, in the future we will have a society where technology will enable us to freely exchange ideas, meet strange new people and learn new things with no language barrier… unless you’re Russian. I’m okay with that.

Please. That would understate the hugeness of the object.
