Star Trek XI (Spoilers)

Post your reactions to the film here.

I don’t have real spoilers yet, but they’re coming. Meanwhile enjoy these clips from the film via Trekmovie.

Just saw the movie and all I can say is wow. I loved it, every minute of it. Can’t think straight at the moment so I’ll post more later

I went to a midnight showing last night. I loved it. Going into it I was wondering if it was a prequel or a reboot. But it’s kind of a sequel/reimagining. The entire cast was great. Chekov was hillarious and Bones was awesome. I loved the score. I’ll have to look for a copy of the main theme.

I undecided about the pulse phasers that were used rather than the tradtional beam. A minor quibble. I want to see it again now.

I just got back from the 7 PM showing (first one in the area! woot!) and it was fabulous. I’m with Magnus - I want to see it again!

We saw it with another couple - it’s kind of funny because the two men haven’t really seen much Star Trek and my friend and I are the ones who explained that no, there weren’t going to be Klingons in the movie, they’re Romulans. And yes, they’re related to Vulcans :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways, it’s really well done, the acting is superlative. There are great action sequences (appealed to the non-Trek watchers in our group) and great call-backs to TOS and the movies (REALLY appealed to me and my friend). And it has the requisite pretty lights in space, so I’m happy.

My favorite part, being the Spock girl I am, was Spock and Spock Prime. (I assume I don’t need to use spoiler tags but just in case watch out!). When SP tells Kirk on Delta Vega that “I have been and ever shall be your friend,” !!! To be fair there were many moments like that throughout the movie (Damnit Jim, I’m a doctor, not a physicist!) that were super awesome.

The only thing that bothered me was - where was that black hole that Nero’s ship became? I certainly hope it wasn’t near Saturn. Perhaps they moved further out but it wasn’t clear and I’m left with the doubt as to where it is.

So basically, love it.

Though I’ve still been thinking about Trek… and it’s definitely all about the man-time. Uhura’s great, but it suffers from the lack of other developed women. I can understand why there aren’t any - but it’s a problem that TOS had, as well.

that said, still a great flick, as my father always used to say

Just saw it.

I am in love.

Me too.

… with Spock. LOL!

(but I think you all knew that already…)

Definitely a good action flick. Obviously a MASSIVE re-invent of TOS, so it’s a bit of a shock like that, but it was still a good story.

Saw the first showing of it in town (7:15) and the crowd wasn’t huge. I’d love to see it again with a bigger crowd.

how about AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA gasp for air AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAwesome!!!

Spock - much more of a pimp than I gave him credit for…nicely done
Spock Prime - good to see you again man

As Casilda said MASSIVE reinvent…soe purists might freak out. to JJ Abrahms–for a guy who wasnt a big Trek fan…he got the vibe of it.

Brilliant film!

WHOA

and that’s all I am capable of saying at this time!

Well, that looks like a bunch of positive responses.

I wonder if the trolls have surfaced elsewhere. mantra time…I will not lurk over to trekmovie.com…I will not lurk over to trekmovie.com…I will not lurk over to trekmovie.com…I will not lurk over to trekmovie.com

So far the most negative thing I’ve read was… um… The New Yorker. Seriously.

But I know from past experience that my taste in movies isn’t theirs, lol.

You know what’s got my 6.7cm skort in a bunch? The whole ad campaign. “This is the Trek for everyone.” I mean I get it. It’s advertising and marketing, selling the film. Fine. But it creates an air of prejudice toward the fans once again labelling as freaks. I guess I’m just sick of the ‘oh you’re one of those’ mentality. No, I’m a person who happens to like a particular genre.

Every review I’ve read has begun (I’m paraphrasing of course), you don’t have to be an obsessed freak to watch this film. Come on. It’s a good thing geeks are endowed with a thick skin and an incredible sense of humor.

This is the morning after for me…

Wasn’t intending to go and see it on first day but decided yesterday morning that I wanted to go, seeing as my local cinema was showing it on thursday.

So first I had to ask my wife nicely. You see, she hates Star Trek. Her mother is a massive Trek fan and so my wife was brought up watching all of it and hated it as a result ( But funnily enough she has seen all the movies…)

I used to be a huge Trek fan in my younger days, and when TNG first started in the US a friend of mine at university had 4 episodes a month converted from NTSC to PAL ( A diffcult , analogue process back then that gave a petty bad image quality) and shipped from the US to the UK. So I was literately one of the first people in the UK to watch TNG  In recent years though I have stopped watching it (Ever since Voyager- I hated that )

So, off we went for an 8:20 showing last night. Only about 15 of us there.

And pretty much from the opening scenes I was hooked. Entertaining from start to finish. I kept wanting to cheer out loud whenever we got a TOS reference. And it made me smile every time we had one of the updated ship sound effects. And at the end there when the Enterprise warped in, all guns blazing, I had to stop myself letting out a cheer
Great cast, great acting, great effects and story. I can see this franchise getting even better and can see all of the main characters being explored in more depth (You know they are going to take some punishment in the years to come!)

And my Trek-hating wife’s opinion ? Best Trek film, ever. She actually enjoyed it…

Overall Rating: Star Trek- you have been, and always will be, my friend.

Oh, one bit that bugged me. Old Spock in the ice cave. Where did he get all the firewood to build a fire on an ice planet/moon ?

Anyone else catch the Enterprise (NX-01) reference? xD

Also… my 100th post!

Was that the Admiral Archer comment. I wasn’t sure I heard it correctly.

Did anyone else think Admiral Pike’s uniform (at the end) looked a little too much like the ST:TMP beige and brown jumpsuits? If that was a shout out, well, i dunno.

LOVED the movie. So many giggle-worthy references to TOS/movies. Nimoy was great. Love the new cast. I think, a win for any Trek fan.

ZK

But us obsessed freaks get even more out of it

(though I did peek over at trekmovie.com. they’re mostly positive - though one guy was like, why do they say “where no one has gone before.” I mean seriously? I find “where no man has gone before” pretty alienating, not being a man and all. I like no one. Inclusivity is a good thing, yo. /rant ;))

If you will remember…I had to remind myself to be honest…Spock warped out of the area & Nero followed him. From the visuals of the area during the battle, there appeared to be no planets around.

Again I had to remind myself because I was going hey! Where’s Saturn! Then I remembered they warped out.

It was a direct shout out. It wasn’t the beige and powder blue suits. This was Kirk’s Dress Admirals suit from the movie. That was always a much better designed suit then the duty uniforms from the movie. Also did you get the menagerie reference to.

All along the way they were combining parts of the old show with parts from the movies.

Oh and that comment from Khan that Kirk said to Sulu has even more meaning now after seeing the movie.
