SETI@Home

Apparently BOINC does not like XP, the crashes have gotten more frequent. I tried reinstalling it after defragging my drive but that only made it worse. It stopped recognizing my Graphics Cards in retaliation to my efforts.

It was almost enough to make me give up trying… So installed it on my Vista partition, now it never crashes. It also refused to recognize my GPU’s though so I scoured the message boards to see if there was a solution. I finally found one, I updated the drivers on my graphics cards and the ornery program finally recognized them. Now I can rejoin the team after a long absence.

I installed new drivers on the XP partition and the spastic software is now recognizing my GPU’s but it still crashs… So I ordered BOINC to no longer accept new tasks, I will run them down while using XP for my normal work and once they are finished I will switch over to using Vista only.

Now that I figured out how to disable the UAC Vista is no longer so damned annoying. Those blasted ‘permission needed’ windows drove me crazy… Once I can scrape the money together for Windows 7 I will be able to finally make use of all that RAM I invested in earlier this year!

EDIT: BOINC just crashed Vista last night, I guess no OS I own is safe from its wrath…

Team GWC with over 1,000,000 total credits now! Go Team!

We’ve also hit the 75 member mark. w00t!

Who here registered with my real name of “Julius?”

This home SETI thing sounds kinda cool.I might give it a whirl.

I dread using new operating systems. They can keep vista, and windows 7.I own three…win95,98,and XP pro.My buddies spend the cash, then let me know if they’re worth it.I get real good with one system, and they introduce another (allthough they’re basically the same).:confused:They like to add color, change menus, and add a few options, then charge you a couple hundred. Then the inevitable compatability issues arise(most my software is XP,2000,they can’t test it all)…after a year, software supports it,then here comes windows 7.I’ll get ‘7’ in a few years, when it works good.
Don’t even get me started on hardware.Hey,lets change the CPU socket.
Dual core,quad core,turbo,forced induction,liquid cooling,target audience…good grief.

you had me at dual core.

You know, I have considered going down to the local Best Buy and installing BOINC on all the computers and seeing how many points I could rack up before they catch on.

Not a good idea. Article on CNN.com about a guy in IT at a school district in AZ having it on their computers. He has resigned…the article is very one sided and there are posts on the Seti@Home message boards about it. The guy managed to rack up over 579 MILLION credits over the last 9 years.

Only install BOINC and run Seti@Home on computers you have been approved to run it on in WRITING if not your own computer.

i don’t think this little signature box thingy updates very often. I’m turning in all kinds of units and it stay the same :frowning:

Yeah, there seems to be a lot more to that story (he was apparently neglecting other duties.)

Are there any more projects that GWC’s team is attached to? Even with my attachment to Einstein@home I am running low on tasks now. Tasks seem to come either in spurts or dribbled out when they do come.

There’s a group for Einstein @ Home. I see other projects showing up in the BOINC stats, so there may be others.

We have news! Quite the two month update!

Are you missing the ‘now’ on “Position based on average credit?”

This is not the now you are looking for.

We must be swamping them with completed tasks… Because I have 5 pages of completed tasks still waiting for validation, dating as far back as Nov 6th.

It is kind of depressing watching my stats fall because they can’t keep up with me…:frowning:

That doesn’t sound right. Have you been hitting the update button in the “projects” folder?

Each work unit you download is also sent to someone else (your wingman they call it @seti). Once both of you have completed the work unit you get your credit. If your wingman doesn’t complete the work unit by the task deadline it’s then sent out to someone else and you have to wait until they complete it to get credit.

I have 10 units waiting validation with 1 dating back to Nov 1st. Now with NEZ and his 5000 school computers getting busted…there will be a lot (yes, this is an understatement) of abandoned work units that will not meet their deadline and have to be resent for crunching. So I expect that having some pending credit will continue for a good while until all those abandoned work units are resent.

Wow! Too bad you can’t pick your wingman. “You can be my wingman anytime.”

That would explain alot, but kind of makes me not want to try as hard. If my wingman is slow, it bogs me down.

I am not having this problem with Einstien though, I usually get validated within a few days. It is just Seti that is a month or more behind.
