It is probably best if you don’t watch it day to day. It can lead to frustration. This is a long distance run, not a sprint. Contribution to the team is more important than individual achievements. If your computer has completed a work unit than trust in the fact that eventually it will be recognized for it, and that you are contributing to a great goal. These are all good, important things.
“You can be mine”
It’s not bogging you down as long as you still get work units. I have my settings to get 7 days worth. That way I don’t run out when they have a server or many servers down.
Right on! Best not to consider it a competition, just a group effort to crunch some data for whatever projects you choose.
Only temporarily. At some point, your units will get validated and then you’ll surge ahead.
My Seti hasn’t worked in days, I keep getting error messages saying there are no tasks to complete.
Anybody else getting that? Does Seti take a holiday break???
They had a 24-hour power outage last Sunday (and will have another this Sunday starting at noon Pacific time) and they are also doing some maintenance on the servers. They don’t take Holiday breaks. They do tend to have frequent outages…their site is not working right now actually.
In your Boinc client you can set change the number of days you can get additional work units. Tools / Preferences / Network Usage then see screen capture below:
And their site is back up, so I found this outage update that explains the no work units:
Scheduled Power Outage - update
We are now recovering from a planned power outage, during which all services were off line. The workunit storage machine is undergoing a RAID resync and no new workunits will be generated until this has finished. The outage was for power upgrades on campus, and a similar outage will happen again this upcoming Sunday (01/03/2010) at 12 noon (Pacific time). 29 Dec 2009 4:26:16 UTC
Thanks! I hope it starts working again soon.
Try Einstein@Home in the meantime. You can set it to a small percentage vs. SETI, and it’ll work on those until SETI is back up.
Where do you change the percentages? Both my computer and my parents’ set at 50% for each, and I couldn’t find how to change it.
I absolutely agree that we need to do this. After the last drought I set mine to maintain 7 days of work.
If you are using one computer Gryper’s process is perfect. If you are running on multiple computers you need to change your settings online.
-
Open Boinc Manager (if you are not on advanced view, choose advanced view)
-
Click on Projects tab
-
Click on SETI project, buttons on left with light up
-
Click on YOUR PREFERENCES
-
You are now on your account page. In the middle section PREFERENCES click on COMPUTING PREFERENCES
-
Scroll to bottom of page and click EDIT PREFERENCES
-
In Network Section (3rd). Update Maintain enough work for an additional…
-
Click UPDATE PREFERENCES at the bottom.
-
Once done go back to the BOINC manager. Click on the SETI project and click the UPDATE button. This will update the settings. If you have multiple computers all over that are running the software they will simply update next time they connect.
Fin
It should be a setting in the Projects tab in the BOINC Manager.
Yeah, my search for ET continues! But I signed up for Einstein@home anyway. Just in case.
What Solai said! He remembered that you have to do the UPDATE thingie and change your account on the seti@home page…I didn’t. Smart man that Solai.
Bump! We are still looking for more members for Team Galactic Watercooler!

Thank you to everyone who continues to support team GWC! Let’s get to 100 members!
We have 94 members now, just need 6 more to hit 100!
They must have finally issued me a new wingman! I am finally getting results and my stats are ticking up. I was losing tasks like crazy for awhile, they were timing out for confirmation… It was sooo frustrating.
Where as with Einstein I have never had a problem, in fact I just moved up to NUMBER 1!!!
WUNDERBARR!!
This is mostly to bump up this thread, but the last of my work units pending from October has finally been validated. And as I was check my stats and the GWC group’s I noticed that we now have 98 members…WOOT!
2 more for our goal of 100 members. Come on and join…you know you want to.
I am going to have to uninstall BOINC, it is not playing nice with (64 bit) Windows 7. With XP and Vista it ran nice and quiet in the background and caused no lag at all, and if I wanted to play a game all I had to do was go into ‘preferences’ and uncheck ‘use GPU while computer is in use’. But WIN 7 was smooth as Hell until I installed BOINC, and now it is as slow and laggy as a Congressman after Happy Hour.
When they release a newer version that is patched for Windows 7 64 bit I will reinstall it. Sorry guys, it is just too frustrating…
