Back in the day Folding@Home was the other big one (protein folding, which aids biochemistry research).
I added MilkyWay. It is making 3-D maps of the galaxy.
I added it too. They were also out of work earlier but it is crunching now. Maybe the Boinc veterans can suggest their favorites.
Hrm. Folding@Home doesn’t seem to be a Boinc project.
Milkyway, Einstein, and Cosmology seem like natural fits. I may put up a poll for a secondary group. Any others that should be included?
Just read through the technical news at SETI, short version is because of a few variables in recent history there have been occasions for “the well to run dry.” We can continue to discuss other projects we can support, but I for one feel pretty near and dear to SETI.
A quick fix you can make is to queue up additional work to bridge the gaps. From advanced view click on the project and click on the preferences button. Click on the computing link and change “Maintain enough work for an additional work” from .25 days to 2 or 3 days. When the pipe begins to fill again you will have a good buffer to avoid outages in the future and help propel Team GWC to the lead! Soon we shall rule the world!
Good advice, Solai.
That said, Cosmology doesn’t support Macs (?!) and Milkyway doesn’t have any fancy graphics, so if we want a second-string GWC Boinc team I’m going to recommend Einstein. (Einstein’s graphics are even more hypnotizing.)
Yes, indeed good advice! Now set for a 3 day work buffer. That makes sense! Those E.Ts don’t stand a chance.
(don’t forget to hit “update” on your BOINC manager after you change things around!)
I crunch for Seti…and since I only have 1 computer to do that with it gives my CPUs a break when there are no work unit. So I am using that time to finish watching Comos and Reclaiming the Blade on Netflix and working with some vacation photos that need resized, etc.
Work units will start flowing again. I’ve still got 4 work units waiting to be validated from last week. I’m set for 7 days of additional work…unfortunately I forgot to hit the “update” button last week when I made changes to my preferences to make them what I had on my last computer.
Seti@home server status shows that the splitter servers that create the work units are mostly up now:
ap_splitter1 lando Disabled
ap_splitter2 lando Disabled
ap_splitter3 lando Running
ap_splitter4 bambi Running
mb_splitter6 lando Running
mb_splitter7 lando Running

mb_splitter9 bambi Disabled
mb_splitter10 bambi Running

Should be getting some work units overnight I think.
I’ve finally got new work! Update!
Me too, 32 units. Crunch time!
I guess it is hit or miss right now. The telescope at Arecibo has been down for maintenance for about a month and there isn’t much data to crunch yet. I haven’t gotten anything for about a week now.
I just got a job.
Wow, what a great idea this was, Solai.
Thanks
You might want to see if there is something amiss on your end. I’ve been sending jobs back and forth all week. There was a time when maybe 5-6 hours passed when one of my computers was idle, but that was it.
Sorry I was a washout, Cap’n. No matter how much I fiddled with the settings, my computer kept freezing and/or crashing so I finally just removed the program. I hope I was at least of some help during my tenure on the team.
Good hunting!
Solai, I just edged you out for “recent average credit.” And I’m totally catching up to you on “total credit.” Hee!
Frak! I’m going to have to install Boinc on a few more computers to maintain my position. Can you beat Chuck or me? Prove it! Get on team Galactic Watercooler!
hey, were you on Vista?
Downloaded Boingy Boingy or whatever today and reactivated my old account. Now crunching data for the GWC team.
I created a GWC team for Einstein, for those who want to have a backup BOINC project and/or those like me who like to have the graphics changeup periodically
