Of theses the top 3 are the ones in the city. Rochester is great. If I wanted to wave to Canada.:stuck_out_tongue: Some of them are even farther. Kips Bay is on 2nd Ave between 31st and 32nd street. Loews 34th is down the Street from Penn. Clawrift mentioned how bad the Empire was last they were there. Just looked it up it also had a bed bug infestation (I don’t want to bring any uninvited guests back ok:D). So I think that’s a pass. Let me know what ya think. Surprised that there are only 3 Imax theathers in Manhattan. Figured there would be more.

There are more IMAX’s in NY, but this is the list I found on the website. Who knows, it might expand as we get closer to the date.
My vote is either for 34th St or Kips Bay. 34th street is really close to The Garden, so its near a lot of subways.

Yep and Kipps bay is down by 2nd ave. Just glad to be going with a group that gets it like I do.

Hey guys - a word on imax in new york.

Most of the imax theaters in new york are in fact, fake imax theaters. If you don’t know, here’s a good article explaining the difference between real and “fake” imax screens - definitely worth reading:
http://www.lfexaminer.com/20081016.htm

The only “real” imax theater in new york city is the AMC Lincoln Square 13 on 68th street and Broadway. I do believe it is the largest screen in the country, maybe north america. Optimus Prime was life size on the screen. However, inexplicably, they will not be showing The Avengers in imax. I don’t know why, but I went there and spoke to the theater manager, and he told me that it’s not going to happen.

The imax screens at AMC 25 (times sq), 15 (kips bay), and 14 (34th st) are all FAKE imax’s. They are not the awe inspiring screens you think of when you think of imax. To me, it’s not worth the extra surcharge on the ticket, and personally I just don’t like supporting those screens.

Here is a comparison of the fake imax screen at times square, and the real one at 68th street:

Now, if The Avengers was going to be playing at the AMC 13 real imax theater, I would throw a hissy fit until you all agreed to see it there. Seeing as it’s not though, the “fake” imax screens are probably some of the better screens around the city to see the movie on, but in many cases, the screen is about the same size as the one next door, but $6 more expensive. Don’t expect a life size hulk to appear on screen.

Enjoy everyone! I don’t think I’ll be able to make it myself, but I’m sure you all will have a blast no matter where you see it. I will be seeing the movie at the next closest real imax screen, which is in New Rochelle, NY… but I’m going to have to wait until the following week.

Happy 500th post to me! …about frakin time

Hey Craprica! First off, great seeing you on the Forum. Second, thanks for the info on the NYC screens. I know you live in the area (or did last I met ya) and it’s awesome that you’re looking out for your fellow GWCers even though you won’t be attending. I can’t make this one either but will be watching it with my newly adopted west coasties on Sunday. What is it with the IMAX screens in NYC? Is it a space issue? Real estate is so expensive there, is it just too prohibitive to have a real IMAX screen?

Happy 500th post! I’ll assume you’re still playing the piano once in awhile (?) Don’t be a stranger here.

Thanks topgun!

I don’t know why there’s only one, it sucks! The lines there are always soo long for event movies. …I actually waited 6 hours to see Transformers 3 and 7 hours for harry potter last summer, (I was first in line though:groucho:)

Yep, still doing piano. I havent left the forums or the podcasts, I just havent been posting much. Lurkers forever!

Thanks for the IMAX Theater comparison. I’m not too worried about which theater to go to, I’m sure most would be fine. My main concern is that it be reasonably easy to get too, and not a dump. The other thing would be to make sure we find a theater where people are not talking during the movie, or at least a place were security will kick them out if they do. Perhaps some of the NYCers can make suggestions?

I’m not sure which of these theaters are screening the film, but I would not like to go the the Empire 25 (last time I was there there was a rat running around the floor while I was watching War Horse. Needless to say, I’ve been avoiding it ever since)

That to me is a warning sign.

I remember the AMC Loews 34th Street being easy to get to. I have only been there once, so I can’t comment on the cleanliness, although I don’t remember it being any dirtier them most theaters…

If we are going IMAX (even a “fake” IMAX) then I would say there since I know where it is. If we are not doing IMAX then everything is back up in the air.

I’ll also let the NYers weigh in as well. I would like to make a decision by Wednesday. I am also thinking I would prefer the 1 - 2 time frame as I may be meeting other friends for dinner and if Badger has to leave by 7 we can’t be too late getting out of the movie and still get dinner, unless we are doing lunch before the movie, which is a whole different ball gaame. (I may have them join us for dinner, but not sure yet)

Well as of now I’m fine with all we have mentioned (Empire 25 excluded). The Imax part is nice but not a deal breaker. 34 would be I think easier for most coming in. Other wise the Lincoln center place would work to since I think Imax may be off the table. Anyway let’s hash this out.

I’m still trying to find out if I have a hockey game that morning (they kinda need the goalie and I don’t wanna be dick to them too)…but I’m keeping an eye on what the plans are and def looking to get out there as soon as I can!

I wish they were playing it on the IMAX Lincoln Square. I saw the first and third Lord of the Rings there and it was unbelievable. I’m for either 34th or Lincoln Square (IMAX or not). Lets pick a screen and I’ll meet you all there.

Okay it’s Wednesday, what are we doing? Have you gotten any ideas? Are we going to 34th street or Lincoln Center? If we meet at Penn station where should we go and meet at? I’ll put in Tim Horton’s it’s probably the best place to go to. Centrally located in the Amtrak terminal. There we can all meet, get a cup of coffee and then head to the subway to Lincoln center.

If we meet at Grand Central I’d say let’s go to the big clock in the center of the terminal or we can go to the Apple store and meet there either way good with me. Lets get this is ball rolling. We really have only a few days left.

I will be working in the morning, so I wouldn’t be able to get into the city before 3:30-4:00pm if all goes well. So I’ll probably miss the movie. You all go to the movie and then I’ll catch up with all of you for dinner.

Are we doing the GWC Approved Irish Pub on 33rd or are there other ideas?

Rai, I’ll try to talk to you or Badger when I get in to GC.

We should probably just meet at the theater, since I don’t know if everyone will be passing through Penn. Many of us are, but it might slow things down to meet there and then head to the movies. As for a theater the 34th street one seems like the best, but I again defer to a native NYCers who may have been to some of these places. I can check movie times tomorrow morning.

If we see it at Lincoln center, I may actually show because I’m living just a few blocks away… probably won’t be able to resist

OK, I belive the consensus is: AMC Loews 34th Street 14 & IMAX (Manhattan) and the 12:30 pm Showing. It seemed to be the easiest for everyone to get to

But I don’t think it is an IMAX showing - since the only ones I can find in IMAX are 3D which I know we didn’t want.

I would say meet in front of the Theater no later then 12 pm. I am not sure anymore who all is coming, so if you are planning to join us please post (or if you are on facebook I have that group of who is attending). I would like to be in the theater by 12 so we can sit together and far enough back so that I don’t get motion sick.

Badger and I at least will be in Penn about 11 am, so if anyone wants to we can hang out somewhere for the hour if you want to arrive around that time.

I think the plan is then to head to Tir Na Nog, which is around the corner, unless anyone has any other suggestions. I would say that may change depending on everyone’s moods, of if you don’t have someone in the groups cell number reach out to one of us in DM’s.

hey Raemani - I checked the website and that is indeed an imax 3d showing. The only non-3D afternoon showing at 34th street is at 2:50pm.
… There is a 12:50 2d showing at Lincoln Center

Where is Lincoln Center (I am a bit confused).

I don’t care - just trying to figure out what the group wants to do.

The only non-3D showings at AMC Loews 2:50 and 9:40. So for movie times alone it might be worth seeing it in 3D. I too am unclear where the Lincoln Center theater is.

I’m gonna have to miss this unfortunately =/
