Life is teh suck today because (a.ka. the official B_tch & Moan thread)

Why, are you in a bad mood? :stuck_out_tongue:

That it is. My favorite Bolano is The Savage Detectives and By Night in Chile, in some ways I think 2666 is overrated… but in general, I find Bolano to be overrated. He’s not my type of writer. But well done, nonetheless

I can’t wait to tackle 2666 though I am not sure my espanol is sharp enough at the moment to get 100% of it, so I’ll probably go with the translation. For some reason my department hosted the third annual symposium on Bolano about 2 weeks ago- I hadn’t know much about him before then but now I am super intrigued.

Can I just say how the world is small - I got an invitation to go to that but, as I’m not a bolanofilic I didn’t go :stuck_out_tongue:

How crazy would it have been if we had known that in advance?!

So…

we were at the mall doing some Christmas shopping earlier today… and it turns out my favorite clothing store for nice professional-ish clothes is going out of business!

Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

On the plus side, everything is super discounted so I got some good deals, but what am I going to do when I need to break out the Spring outfits!? Because they won’t be there anymore!?

This is very upsetting. I finally found a store near me that has nice stuff that I can afford (and that fits!), and now it’s closing. Ugh.

What store? Many chains are closing stores but not completely going out of business- so don’t panic until you double check it. My mom passed me the chain mail about Ann Taylor and AT Loft going away and she was (thank goodness it wasn’t true!) totally fooled by it.

The store filed for Chapter 11, I think, and what the store said was that it was an all out going out of business sale. :frowning:

As a new teacher you should do an experiment. Give homework but don’t count it against peoples grades unless it would help them.

Cause…Damn I wish my teachers had done that in school.

It’s -5 degrees. We’ve got 6+ inches of snow. It’s blowing 40+ mph. I think winter’s here.

I honestly knew nothing about him until I read the review for the new translation of 2666 in the Washington Post Book World a few weeks ago. I read the first few pages in a book store (which is something I do when I’m picking new fiction to read. If the first pages of a book grab me, I know it will be worth my while) and I got hooked. I’ve been a little out of touch with Spanish and Latin American literature for a while, so this will be a chance to get to know a major writer I’m unfamiliar with (I also picked up “Nazi Literature in the Americas,” which sounds positively cheeky and Borges-esque [Borgean?] to me, and I’m totally into that). But I have to finish the Wally Lamb I’m in the middle of first, something I doubt will take me much longer as it’s a difficult book to put down.

Either that or you’re living in New Caprica. :stuck_out_tongue:

(Something I DON’T miss about upstate NY: the winters. Ugh! In your neck of the woods, I hear they’re even worse. You have my sympathies.)

Well, everything the hub blew out this AM has already drifted in. We’ll go out for another round about 4pm. Whoo-hoo.

Dear Solai and Pike,

What the hell kind of moderators are you? I specifically told you to keep my identity secret and now apparently Nick-Boomer has found out and gods knows who else knows too? I am a very famous TV writer/producer and I’ve tried to stay anonymous, but now you’ve ruined everything. Do you realize how many GWC Firefly and GWC Buffy groupies are gonna be bothering me now?Tonight I’m supposed to be reviewing scripts for my new series Doll House, but now you’ve got me all flustered.

Love Joss

Joss just hang in there. We can pretend we do not know who you are. The GWC are good people and only will bother you 12 to 14 hours a day. Keep up the good writing.

Thanks Keara. You have no idea how I’ve miss you all too.
So, over 100,000 people in New England are still without power, and I be one of them. On Friday and Saturday night we all slept in the family room and had a fire going all night—used a LOT of firewood. The house was very, very cold. Tonight we decided to accept my sister’s offer and we’re sleeping over her house. Her power came on early Saturday morning. Feels so good to be warm and finally take a shower. And now I’m using their wonderful Internet. School was canceled Friday and it’s canceled tomorrow (Monday). I’ve heard rumors that we may be without power until Wednesday.
Weird how the simple combination of heavy ran on Thursday combined with freezing temps caused such damage. Ironically, things would have been infinitely more manageable if it had snowed instead.

Thanks, Leah. You’ve always been my favorite.

Dear Joss,

You should have just given us Alyson Hannigan’s email address like we asked.

Sincerely,

Pike

I take offense to that, Joss. Is it because I only recently came to know your work? Is that why I’m not your favorite?

I have a strange feeling about this.
