Life is teh suck today because (a.ka. the official B_tch & Moan thread)

Soooo, that first grading exams session is sucking, huh?

So i came home last night to find my cable not working properly (i was gettign a blank screen with the a message saying my channel will being shortly). I turned off my cable box over night to let it reset. Then this morning i power cycled it (I unplugged it for like 15 minutes) Powered it back up and it then let it sit for another 15 minutes. Finanly it kicked back on but It pixelates into an unwatchable mess. I called up Comcast and they cant get anyone out to fix it until Tuesday. That means i miss the last episode of Heroes till the next session and I miss Chuck. I htink the heavy rain i had yesterday got into my cable line and messed it up some. I might try and fix it some myself. Sigh.

Can’t you watch them on NBC.com?

yea, But i was hoping to join the Frak party I have missed the last couple and i want to get back in them…sigh.

I’ve been sick for a week. Flu-like symptoms and blinding headaches. Been working from home on the laptop (with screen brightness all the way down and the curtains closed) - Getting a little bit Gollum-esque after a week of this… (and living in a basement suite, i’ve technically been underground too if you think about it): "my social and work lifesssssesss… filthy little illnessssessss, they stole it from usssssss! they tricksed us! we mussst stabsss them with medicationssssess, put out itsssss germsesssssss, then we be the massster!’

okay I’ll shut up now! :frowning:

the truth finally comes out. Everyone despises exams, everyone. From teachers to students…

ROTFL

Just a quicl “Life is teh suck” note.
We had an ice storm in New England and we lost power —might be out for several days.
So Im here checking my email from a …from a…I can hardly say it…from a McDonalds.
Believe me, I wish it were a Panera or a Starbucks or some more fiting my yuppie sensiblities, be MickieDs is the only WiFi spot I found that has power.
Sorry I’ll miss the Xmen 2 frak tonite.:frowning:
Everyone have a drink in my name during the White House scene.
Good night and good luck.

I know your Joss Whedon stop trying to hide it :stuck_out_tongue:

Damn. Sorry about that, dude. I hope you get power back soon.

Well, you made me laugh…and since laughter’s the best medicine…FEEL BETTER VERY SOON!!!

Missed you today! I was wondering where you were. It’s been quiet around here today, actually. Badger’s at home “making cookies”…a.k.a. went home-home because he’s sick as a dog and his mom is there. Even as mom myself, I still call my mom when I’m sick or even having a bad day. So, it’s been super-quiet here today. Not enough people to play with!!!

Just hum the Burger King song for instant hipster ‘irony’ cred.

Personally I hate trying to keep awake in a four hour exam while supervising

IYKWIM

I’ve got grading coming up next week. I’m only giving one final, though, as my other two classes did final projects that are already turned in and graded (though one still needs to be inputed into the grade book). I do need to average out grades and the like, not to mention figure out what to do with the weeks of backlogged homework assignments that I know are not going to be graded in time.

I’m definitely not assigning this much homework next term!

Because I leave university in a couple of days to go home for the holidays and feel guilty that I could miss my new roommates (who I’ve known for 3 months) more then I have been missing my friends back home (who I’ve known for 5-7 years).

I hope the power comes back soon!

Though I do chuckle… I am not sure that it would even have occurred to me to use WiFi at McDonalds, mostly because I didn’t know they had it, too. When in need, I’ve always gone the Panera or coffehouse route

I wish I had known… I’ve been home all day, switching between reading my back New Yorkers (there are only 3 left… I started out in September this morning…) and watching some Dr Who. Alas.

No kidding. The sad thing is that only a small percentage of students would profit from never undergoing any exams.

I used to learn it all and then do a massive brain dump as soon as I walked out of the exam, unless it was a subject I really liked

I don’t know, that sounds pretty wonderful to me. I’ve recently started reading fiction again for the first time in a year and have been loving it (Wally Lamb’s I Know this Much is True. What a beautiful book!). I wish I had tons of uninterrupted time to read as I’m in a big, sprawling book kick (picked up Roberto Bolano’s 2666 in Spanish at the Johns Hopkins library. Since I’m faculty I get it till June. Woot! I’m gonna need it. That sucker’s 1000 pages). As it is, I’ve had to put my BSG re-watch on hold till the holidays, and I doubt I’ll be able to complete it before January 16.

I guess there are worse things to moan about, though.

I much prefer assigning papers, presentations or other creative/research projects that stretch students’ abilities and teaches them things they can apply to other subjects and disciplines. It’s a grading nightmare to have to read tons of papers, but I get more out of them and get a stronger sense of whether or not students absorbed the course content that way than if I ask them to regurgitate information on a test. The only classes I ever give exams in are first year (sometimes second year, although not this year) music theory courses where the material is similar to a math course and involves developing specific tools and learning very specific linguistic devices that aren’t necessarily open to interpretation.

Monday: Told off by “fellow” employees
Wednesday: lost Dish network (restored Friday)
Thursday: city flushed water mains, giving us brown water. Ran bathroom sink to clear our pipes only to have it leak into the kitchen (below it) pipes still leaking whenever water runs for any time
Friday: 9 month old tire going flat
today: Dryer isn’t working.

And people are daring to ask why I’m in a bad mood.
