GWC Podcast #214

So I’ve got to say I’m replying mid-cast, which is a first for me, we’ll see how the last bit goes. I’ve got to pull out my thoughts and get them down before I forget them, so, that aside.

Sean: I would love to see a Halo movie, and I agree, only if they do it right. I am terribly scared they won’t from where I poked around a while back, because I remember a lot of talking saying you can’t focus the movie on a ‘faceless’ character like Master Chief. That, and I wouldn’t want to just see a rehashing of the video game. Maybe if they took the book about Reach and the Spartan training program, and cap it off with something that leads in well to the games (current or when Fall of Reach comes out). But they have to go all the way.

Quoth Frodo “It is also said, do not go to the elves for advice, for they say both yes and no.” That popped through my head during the Picard discussion when he talks with his brother and advice. (and as a complete aside, I tend to say yes and no when somebody corners me into advice)

Speaking of Picard, I realized a week or so ago that all the Picard to Ahab references in the borg movie (I can’t for the life of me remember the name) are ironic in a whole other sense. Patrick Stewart played Ahab in a movie version of Moby Dick. Quite possibly said before, but I haven’t read on the forums since the meetup.

As to Caprica, (which is almost an anagram of Picard, just an extra c and a and minus a d-I’m random) I doubt I’ll pick it up when I get back home. I was watching (and enjoying BSG) until I went to college in the middle of the mountains where there was no sci-fi channel and missed out on most of it for four years, then came back in time to catch the ending episodes. I just couldn’t pick it up again at the end-dark isn’t for me.

But, by what you guys have said on the 'cast, I’ll make the following comparison on Caprica (complete full of hot air and without having watched it). Some of what was said reminds me of when I tried to read Tolstoy: brilliant characters, incredibly realistic, art in its own sense, and pretty damn hard to get through. I still have hopes for War and Peace, and maybe someday I’ll watch Caprica, but I’ll probably make my way through the second two arcs of Robotech first.

Most of the time I dont even have the time to follow the weeks arc. If the Crew decided to spend 2hrs talking about plumbing I would still be entertained.

this is for the young’uns who were wondering about Audra’s song reference :

Back in MY day…we didn’t have no fancy autotune! Now git off my lawn!!!

My favorite Comic Book is Strangers In Paradise.

Written by Terry Moore, website: http://www.strangersinparadise.com/sipindex.html

At first, I thought this was written by a woman- the characters were so spot on, the observations amazing, and the art, well, I was in love.

The in-depth character development- both straight and gay, male and female is breathtaking. I encourage you to check it out.

Terry has been at ComicCon SD, about every year I’ve been there since '96. And while Strangers has finally come to a close, his art and other stories continue!

Oh, and he’s also a fan of Xena, as illustrated by these wonderful covers of a one-off he did placing SIP characters in the context of the show!

Francine & Katchoo / Tambi

I really truly enjoyed the discussion at the end of the 'cast about keeping an open mind and being open to trying new things. It reminded me of something my father used to tell me. He said that if you have to do something which you find boring, the best way to get enthusiastic about it is to learn some details about it. The process of researching whatever it is will quite often help you to become more interested in it.

Having said this, I would like to challenge the crew to do an arc on “Starship Troopers”, a movie that I personally like, to see if the time and effort put into learning enough about the movie to talk about it changes your perspective. Just throwing it out there.

So many of the things you say in the podcast resonate with me on many levels and you have introduced me to a lot of great art that I probably would have missed otherwise. Also, I now get upset when people use the word penultimate incorrectly.

Thanks for it all.

Rob from Canada

penultimate… & denoument

The Penultimate Peril, the twelfth and penultimate book in Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events, heavily emphasizes dénouement as a plot point (e.g., the character Dewey Denouement and the Hotel Denouement).

Just finished this week’s cast, just wanted to say a big thank you to getting me back into TNG, haven’t watched it in years, and following the arc with you, inspired me to go back and watch the Picard episodes. It then prompted me to start re-watching the series, a very monumental endeavor…

In honor of the Picard arc, I wanted to share the Picard video, that I am sure most of you have seen, but it just makes me smile every time I watch it.

I don’t get the Vin Diesel/Judi Dench/DM reference. Never played D&D. Explanation please?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

DM is dungeon master, the story teller of the game. So like they’re all

“You find yourself in a tavern and blah blah blah wenches and a scary dude is in the corner what do you do?”

I thought DM was – wait for it – the guy from Depeche Mooode.

I kid, I kid.

Can you imaging Judi Dench narrating for you? Gods that would be choice!!

So, who are we hanging today? Villager?

I think you should throw in “All Good Things…” into the Picard arc.

Essentially Vin Diesel tweeted he was going to get Dame Judi Dench to DM (Dungeon Master–sort of a storyteller/referee) his D&D game.

Pretty nerdy, right?

Oh, it gets nerdier.

He’s actually referencing the Penny Arcade (geeky webcomic) guys, who riffed on the fact that Vin plays D&D and fantasized about what an awesome gaming group would be. Vin figures large (as it were) and Judi Dench was put forward as the ideal DM.

Unfortunately, I can’t remember if it was done in their podcast, or their playsessions (with the PvP cartoonist and/or Wil Wheaton) on the official D&D podcast.

Anyway, they worked Vin into a Penny Arcade comic.

DM isn’t the guy from Depeche Mode, DM is Depeche Mode.

You know, I always preferred the term

Game
Operations
Director

And in that vein, I’d like to have James Earl Jones running a campaign.

Thanks for clearing that up. 101 frak party to celebrate its 20th birthday 8 a.m. Sunday morning. Special discussion topics will include “Prescient Reality Programming” and “Trouser Mishaps.”

I just got finished listening to this podcast, and could not agree more! This place is different from other forums- that is what makes it so enjoyable. I have been exposed to so many new shows and movies that I never would have even thought to watch were it not for this forum. I also like the fact that you can ask questions about stuff you are not familiar with, and people will actually answer you and explain, and be nice about it! You don’t see that a lot in other forums. That is what makes GWC special.
