GWC Podcast #160: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Done Deal. As long as I get to sleep in that room, I’ll pay whatever rent you ask—I’ll pay in credits or quatloos, or if you’ve evovled beyond the primitive need for money, I’ll also happy to pay you nothing if that’s more trekkie for you.

I’ll consider it. I just don’t like having to move or asking people to drive me places. (I’m getting my driver’s license tomorrow, so maybe it won’t be such a problem.)

That’s quite the thing about these forums. You can’t assume anything (besides occasional computer access.) There are people who can’t drive, or get Netflix, or have seen Trek II, etc.

Shouldn’t you offer gold pressed latinum???

That’s one true measure of a family’s coolness and general civilization: what TV you’re allowed to watch during dinner. Awesome.

I’ve never seen Citizen Cane or Gone With The Wind.
Go figure.

Eh…that’s TNG/DS9 era. Does that count as real Star Trek?

I like how you think.

Dinner time was to eat and talk not TV. My mother was not thrilled. Remember I am an old timer so dinner was a time that was special.

Ouch!

Khan

Sorry. Yes, it’s all Star Trek. It’s just that I’m having renewed love for the Original Star Trek. I thot it was buried in the past, but now that I’ve found so many allies that have a love for it, I’m really appreciating how strong it was compared to all the follow-on Trek series.

Oh that could get you in trouble. it is a Star Trek continuum.

I phrased that badly. We also have a rule about no TV during dinner. But certain stuff is worth the rare exception where you break the rule. And the quality of that certain stuff is the measure of coolness.

So TV during dinner is generally bad, but Trek during dinner is prescient coolness.

I’m very much a fan of both and don’t see TOS as “strong compared to all the follow-on Trek series” but rather as simply “strong.” TOS and TNG-onward are different – and yet similar in key ways that make them part of the same universe. Great, great stuff.

You phrased that well. I am just saying that the idea of watching any TV during dinner was a major no. So that my dad letting us watch ST is a sign of how much he loved it too. My dad was cool about my fascination with science fiction. His birthday is soon so I miss him and am thinking about him more.

I started watching all different kinds of ST. Your ST arch got me going. I like all of them for different reasons. My only negative is the Next Gen. had so little conflict between characters that it sometimes seemed to inhuman. No one ever disagreed. I say remember when they were made and you can enjoy all of the ST shows and movies.

Now do not take that as a I hate Next Gen. since I named my black lab Jordy. Young ones go be adventures and watch a bit of all the shows. I still can not believe that some of you grew up without ST.

I think what he meant was that, having been overshadowed by the sequels, it still holds up pretty well.

I had a mini-discussion about this with The GF re. TOS Season Three. Yeah, it’s the worst of the three, but there are some real gems in there.

A few weeks before TREK II came to the theaters, I volunteered at a promo for the film at a local mall. They had a short trailer with scenes from the film…including some scenes that were NOT in the theatrical version (or in the director’s cut either).

I found this horrible version of it on youtube. Maybe someone knows where a better copy is online.

There is a scene from the beginning with this dialogue:

KIRK: Your protege is first rate. A trifle emotional.

SPOCK: She’s half Romulan Jim. The half mixture tends to make her more emotional than me, for example.

KIRK: Than you? Yes. I see that.

Then there is a later scene from the end of the film:

SAAVIK: On course to Ceti Alpha 5. All is well.

KIRK: Good. I believe you know [obvious words edited out] David Marcus.

[Shot of sultry looking Saavik] [Shot of David smiling]

KIRK: Ahhh, she’s learning by doing.

I’m not sure I’d speak so quickly about all non-US people rejecting the term America or American - there’s a lot in the Spanish speaking world that uses America as a hemispheric term and quite resents the US’s exclusive appropriation of the term.

Trek cannon is absolutely suspect. But in case you are interested in the history of the planet Vulcan, a novel by Diane Duane called Spock’s World chronicles the events of the Romulan exile. Romulans were bascially Vulcans that refused to suppress their emotions. They left to settle another world proving that Vulcans could survive with their emotions. I believe there is something in there about them evolving differently because of the environmental changes between worlds but that may have been handled in another novel in the Duane universe. She wrote many Trek novels and established much of the EU cannon.

Spock’s World is one of my all-time favorite Trek novels. I highly recommend it, especially to Spock fans. (I’m looking at you, casilda)

Audra, this one’s for you.

Hmmm. Corn. Iowa. Kirk. Do the math.

Who, you mean Nichelle Nichols? (I love that line from this 'podcast).

A core reason that this GWC community you created has thrived and flourished is that you, Audra and Sean really maintain a very positive outlook on all this awesome sci fi entertainment. And, although, I’m not the first to say it, that’s really awesome. So, in that spirit I try to catch myself not to go “hating” on anything. So my blurting out that “Is TNG/DS9” real Trek?" earlier wasn’t in keeping with that spirit.
Mind you, I’ve seen every single episode of every Star Trek series, so for me it’s all different levels of adoration. But, Star Trek TOS has a special place in my heart, and having grown up with it I can’t be objective about it. I mean, the Trek universe is something I played in before TNG every hit the scene. But it’s a richer Trek world thanks to TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT. Among those, only Enterprise I’d really cite as not living up to it’s potential. But it was still better than an hour of Star Gate any day of the week.

Yeah, that’s partly what I meant. But another part is that my affection for TOS is subjective and personal. You can’t really compare on the basis of special effects, cheesiness, etc.—and the other series had longer runs—but as Chuck has often said about the 1st movie in a Trilogy, the 1st one if the best one because it’s where it all started.

Well, hands down this Trek arc is my favoriate arc–and particular now that we’re in the Kirk/Spock/McCoy portion of the arc.
If I could quit my job, I’d be posting 24 hours a day with all I could blabber about Star Trek.
