GWC Podcast #152: BSG 4.5 Deadlock

During the whole scene with Tigh/Ellen/Six in sickbay, I felt they were setting up the unraveling of the cylon mythology. They are a confused bunch, plans and all. They stopped their whole campaign on the whim of Athena’s conception. God told them to destroy humanity, god told them to procreate, etc. All these decisions are based on faith, and the reprecussions are crumbling around them.

Much like Erf for the humans, I think the loss of Liam will create significant shift in what the cylon believe. Love is not enough.

I think it will also lead to a deeper discovery of Hera’s purpose.

I’ve come to think that Head Six probably has no connection to the real Six at all. And I think when Caprica was seeing Head Gaius it was just her projecting as a strange way of dealing with losing him and nothing more. Maybe this was even made as dramatic a surprise as it was so we would analyze it do death and it would make a good red herring.

The funny thing is that in the beginning you can see both Head Six and Head Gaius as being products of their guilt, only Gaius gets a devil on his shoulder saying “Whatever you do to protect yourself, it’s okay, you’re special” while Six’s is a cruelly critical talking conscience that says stuff like “You really think sparing one human’s life will make up for everything else you did and make you the kind of person I could love?” But as far as I can remember, there’s always been a lot of deliberate ambiguity about whether or not the things Head Six tells Baltar could somehow all just be coming from him, while there’s nothing remarkable about Head Gaius that makes him seem like anything more than a verbal manifestation of what Caprica’s thinking.

I was thinking back to the scenes with a Head Leoben in “Maelstrom” today and remembering how this “Leoben” in her visions acts very differently with Kara, sort of fatherly. This actually made me speculate once that the Leobens might feel this special connection to her because one of them was her father. But right before Kara wakes up she says “You’re not Leoben” and he says “I never said I was,” which seems to be asking us to wonder specifically “Who then?” rather than assume he’s nothing more than her dream. Don’t ask me how it’s possible, but at this point I’d bet money it was her real father Daniel somehow speaking to her because she’s ultimately going to get all the answers about herself through him.

Interesting the timing of Ander’s EEG coming back once Liam ‘died’.

Did we lose Liam or Anders?

On RDM’s podcast, he mentions that Racetrack, Skulls and all the rest of the mutineers are off the Galactica in a prison ship, leaving Galactica understaffed and that’s why they’re having such a hard time keeping order in Dogsville and why Adama is open to giving the Boncubines guns.

Yet another symptom of racing through so much plot in so few episodes… information crucial to understanding a plot point is left out. (Also known as the George Lucas school of information sharing.)

Since he bothered to mention it, maybe we’ll actually see the prison ship in one of the remaining episodes.

Wow, that’s good to know. I need to listen to more of that podcast!

I’d say not much is learned from recent RDM podcasts except the above info regarding where the mutineers are and how understaffed Galactica is and something about Liam and what happened:
Per RDM, the fate of Liam - whether it had to do with “love” and the return of Ellen or was simply another failed Cylon pregnancy - is intentionally ambiguous.
Awww craaap…I think I just figured out the ending. (and no, I don’t think Starbuck is the angel)

I just wanted to say I loved the Mass Effect talk because the game is awesome. It’s not really related to BSG, but if you love good sci-fi, you should love Mass Effect.

Hear, hear. The Mass Effect story is badass and totally worthy of consideration separate from the gameplay. It’s a classic story that reminds me of lots of pop – and hard – scifi.

I just recently bought Mass Effect, I need school to like close for the rest of the week!

BTW I laughed when you first mentioned the trailer. I just could not help but think “Here he goes”.

The non-BSG talk is just as fun Chuck.

Because we all know Starbuck is no angel. I want to know what you think the ending is, but at the same time I don’t.

Ah man, haven’t listened to RDM podcast yet. Glad he gave that important bit of information, but it’s sure annoying to get it that way. I’ve been wondering what happened to Racetrack and Seelix.

I agrree, that Leoben was so out of character from what we had seen of him up to that point. He was compassionate. Perhaps he was Daniel the lost #7, perhaps he was Daniel her father, perhaps he was the Cylon One-True-God. We will hopefully find out soon.

Here’s a link to a blog post describing some of the details that were omitted from the final cut. It appears that Galactica security forces are undermanned due to the loss of the mutineers who are cooling their heels on the prison barge. As a result the Sons of Ares have the run of the lower decks. Adama and Roslin contemplate bringing in Centurions to help with security, but decide against it. It is that which Baltar is referring to when he calls giving this cult guns, the final human solution to hold off a revolution…

she does have wings on her arm though!! HEE HEEE!

And she is naturally gifted at flying in a Viper, which has wings. I think somebody on some really old post here once pointed out that the Aurora figurine is shaped kind of like a Viper. And her ship ended up having a pretty big part in getting them to Earth.

Thanks Phil for the link.

So does Anders.

If Adama and Tigh have this Guy Love thing going, does that make Tigh “Cylon Bear”?

And together they form a winged figure… Personally, I don’t think that means anything, but it is relevant evidence if you’re going on the angel theory.
