GWC Podcast #152: BSG 4.5 Deadlock

Let’s take a vote! (Kidding.) We dive into this week’s BSG 4.5 episode, Deadlock. Highlights: we love how Ellen is still Ellen (and still hates Bill Adama), explore the emotional issues that arise from Ellen’s barren womb, enjoy Six’s “guns — bigger guns!” moment, chat about Paula’s issues, dish on the new white Six dress (and talk naked vs. skimpy), comment on Adama’s continuing drinking problem, contemplate the function of death in humanity, look forward to the Chief discovering what Tory did to Cally, wonder why high heels are “meh” but quarian reversed knees are h-o-t (and look similar), and analyze the new Mass Effect 2 teaser trailer.

Wow! I get first dibs (after Chuck of course) on a podcast discussion! cool! What “guns” is he referring to? heheh :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh I’m looking forward to this

I want Ellen’s black dress (I even mentioned last night, I have one similar to it but embroidered not brocade and green not black). But that white dress? Not the best thing Head Six has ever worn. If you’re going to put her in white, give her back the Kobol white dress!

(sorry. and I’m downloading the 'cast as I type ;))

I’m downloading it too…but I loved both dresses, personally. I thought it was head!Six’s best look, actually. (I was starting to think that BSG had hired the costume directors from Pushing Daisies.)

A quick recap of the episode is here:

i hope the final 4 episodes aren’t as dull as “bitchlock” and we wont have to wait half an hour for bsg discussion or talk of photo shoots and red darf…still love you guys!

Is it me, or do our lovely podcasters seem to be 'sploding with joyous exuberance? lol!

Wow. What an ep! Ellen is still very much Ellen, isn’t she!

Never thought I’d say poor Caprica, ever!

I wonder what Anders will have to say!

Oh yeah, they cooking with gas on this one. I’m only half way through but this is a fun one

Ok, I’ve only listened to the first 30 minutes, but I just wanted to say: Audra, my dear, you are on fire this week. MOOOOORE GUNS!

Tigh appreciation – I believe that Tigh demonstrated he does love Caprica, loved the idea of Liam and loves Ellen. (Great scene by Hogan at the bedside regarding “feeling” versus “saying” it.)

Ellen, for whatever reason, cannot accept aspects of “human” Tigh. The Adama/Tigh bromance is a part of this show (and we love it). But the make-up of Ellen (v1 and v4) is not someone who can appreciate the friendship of Adama and Tigh. That said, I think there is absolute truth in her comment to CapricaSix that Tigh’s love for Adama/Galactica is a force.

Regarding HeadSix – was it just me or did the HeadSix’s top make her look pregnant? Maybe it was just the shirt and its shape, but I thought she looked pregnant a la CapricaSix.

Until this episode, I never connected the Head characters with their actual counterparts. But this made me wonder…

Points of awesomeness:
The Ellen/Tigh argument about Caprica’s pregnancy over Sam’s bedside as the Cylons are trying to decide what to do regarding their destiny and the fleet.

The memorial wall of dead Cylons (Twos, Sixes and Eights). Awesome.

The plausible return of Anders.

CapricaSix kicking some whooparse in Dogville. Nice to see her badassness return, however briefly.

Wish:
Baltar/CapricaSix – may we please have a scene between these two?!

Let me just say for the record that, Shepard is suppose to be a woman! See, it is in the name, She-pard. The greatest thing that has happened for male rights in like 50 yrs and some still choose not to take advantage.
Women have been enjoying digitally perfect male bottoms for years and now it is finally our turn. We all can agree that staring at a female rear for 50+ hrs is better than the alternative. What could be hotter than a woman who kicks butt and can save the universe? Preach on Reverend Sean, spread the good work!!!
I would also add that if you take the Heels and put them together with the Automatic Weapons you get very close to perfection. Why do you think James Bond is so popular?

To the question of the Cylon Population, I made a thread about it that didnt get much notice, but maybe check it out
here

I currently theorize that the death of Liam and the ‘awakening’ of Anders are connected. Is the intuitive leap that Ellen made was that a persons ‘soul’ (I’m not sure how else to describe) simply transfers to the next available body (and for that matter a body that most closely matches their own). Is the resurrection technology just a matter of increasing the distance over which the ‘soul’ can transport itself. Perhaps a pure Cylon baby is simply receptacle for the ‘soul’ of deceased Cylon and Anders ‘soul’ fled his body because of the perception of imminent death (and since their was a receptacle nearby). However once there was some difficulty with ‘Liam’ and it was obvious that his body had been fixed, Anders ‘soul’ returns home (as it were)

If this theory is anywhere near true then I would further hypothesize that the beauty of a Cylon/Human hybrid is that the ‘soul’ does not have to come from a Cylon. In fact if the recently deceased humans also simply transfer their ‘soul’ into the next ready receptacle there were on shortage of recently deceased humans.

The only hitch in this theory is the idea of memory and awareness. I would argue that a baby’s brain is not functional enough to access the memories from the previous ‘life’ and that as the brain grows the new experiences overlay the past experiences and that the experiences of the previous life simply come to light in dreams and moments of deja vu.

Now if you are going to buy off on all of that, perhaps the reason why Caprica Six and Baltar have ‘head’ versions of each other is because of the circumstances of her death on Caprica and her love for Baltar, somehow intermingle a bit of their ‘souls’

Finally the role of love. Maybe if two people truly love each other, they can break off a piece of their ‘souls’ and transfer them to the baby.

This is my theory about Caprica and Liam’s death.

I still believe Cylon can only have child with love.

and Liam is the child of Tigh and Ellen’s love, not Tigh and Caprica.

Tigh was so hurt by the lost of Ellen and what he did to Ellen, he searched for Ellen in Six and Ellen is what he saw when the Liam is created.

So, when Ellen thought Tigh doesn’t love her, and started to get jealous, she stopped loving him, she just want to hurt him. It wasn’t true love anymore and the child is hurt. That’s what killed the baby.

Finnish the first half of the podcast. I must agree with the above. Oh Audra is always on fire.

You are great at summing things up.

I agree that Liam and Anders are connected how I do not know.

Great podcast guys, I enjoyed it immensely.

I have no deep thoughts on most things that happened this episode.

But the dress. I have to a) say I like seeing people wearing clothes generally and b) Head Six has had so many more flattering dresses than that white one. I felt like she needed a cardigan over it or something. Maybe the angle was weird, but it wasn’t a dress I liked particularly much. That might be involved in how much I loved Ellen’s dress, though, and how much I liked Head Six’s other white dress. Not much can stand up to that, even a strapless dress.

And now that I have proved my frivolity yet again (why can’t we see her shoes!?), keep up the good work!

I really enjoyed the podcast.

I wish I were more literate with music, but I can’t help but wonder if someone out there could see if the brainwave activity we saw in Anders somehow is the same signature as the “Watchtower” song. Like the COS waves we saw were musical frequencies or something.

My other thought was that maybe he was trying to download (resurrect) but there wasn’t a receiving station… of course his eyes moving around probably means there’s some conscious though restarting.

by the way… in sickbay who’s that “8” who seems to be cool enough to hang out with the final five and Caprica 6? Is that supposed to be Athena? If it is she’s out of the uniform we usually see her hanging out in… if it is… is she not identifying herself as on of the fleet anymore?

I think you’re right! I hadn’t thought of that. That’s why the baby died as soon as Ellen told Caprica that she would leave so that she and Saul could live happily ever after with their family. Saul looked at Ellen with a shocked look, and the baby’s heart stopped beating. I think Saul’s heart broke when Ellen said that–that should would be willing to just leave him like that–and that’s what killed the baby. Nice observation.

six tricked tigh into seeing ellen the woman he loved and he did love six for awhile while he thought ellen was dead but as soon as his true love came back he realized he didn’t really love six and that’s what killed the baby

AND YAAAYYY FOR ANDERS BRAIN WIGGLE!!

and i have to say, i am disappointed that ellen is back to being “ellen” and not the enlightened kinder motherly woman from the last episode…it kind of makes everything she said and did in the last ep hypocritical…i was thinking after i saw the no exit that she became who she really was, before cavil fracked with her memory…i wanted to think that fundamental characteristics of each of the f5 were intrinsic, like saul was a loyal friend, and a man of honor to the oath he swore…can’t really think of the words but like he did his duty and fulfilled his obligations(??) that those things were a fundamental part of his personality that cavil couldn’t take away…that cavil MADE him an alcoholic…that ellen WAS a devoted wife but cavil MADE her an unfaithful whore but he couldn’t make her NOT love saul and stay with him…but cavil gave them memories to make them take certain actions while on caprica just to frack with them and help them experience the worst parts of being human…ellen is the only one of the f5 that has resurrected and can remember her life BEFORE cavil’s interference, so why she being so petty?? i mean she KIND OF redeemed herself when she said her intention was always to stay with the fleet but she just wanted to know what saul would do??? my friend is arguing with me that ellen was a bitch and an adulterous even before cavil fracked with them…and that saul had drinking problems BEFORE cavil fracked with them…i think cavil put FALSE memories into them to account for them being on caprica for the holocaust…he’d have to, right? and he is arguing that boomer is who she is and my counterpoint was that boomer was not from erf…boomer was programmed from the get go to be a sleeper but learned while she was among the humans to be loyal and value her friends and uniform etc…

anyone get what i’m saying? or can help me express it better?

also ~ with the ‘more guns…bigger guns!’ all i’m hearin is tim tom and kevin from venture bros ep ‘buddy system’ saying ‘we could cut his heart out’ ‘with a knife’ ‘a bigger’ knife’ ‘a frakkin knife!’

‘a gun…a bigger gun… a frakkin gun!’

I really don’t think it makes her a hypocrite… actually, I think it really reinforces what she was saying in the last episode. She has both good things and bad things about her, just like any human. And that’s okay. She’s flawed, not perfect. Ellen is jealous of Tigh’s other loves (and I think rightfully so) and it causes her to act up to get his attention. The wisdom she demonstrated in the last episode is still valid… we’re just seeing the very human tendency to act irrationally when our emotions get the better of us.
