In my defense, I wanted to add that the scene that most amused/horrified me from the original was the one where the two baseships slammed into the surface of a planet that was filled with a flammable gas and blew it up:
I was curious how long the journey took. The known universe is actually about 93,000,000 light years (I was mistaken). That’s 46,500,000 times the distance they traveled assuming they traveled 2000 light years. To get a number big enough to divide by 46,500,000, I counted the seconds in 53 years 1,671,408,000 and divided it by 46,500,000. So I got 35.944… seconds.
That’s right, once they got going at top speed, the journey probably took less than a minute. If I’m wrong, I don’t mind being told so,.
Just got done with the ‘cast, and it was great as usual. However, I have to disagree with whoever said Adama has a problem with the cylon[z] and installing cylon[z] tech. Remember the mutiny was kicked off over this very issue, so I think Adama was trying to be sensitive to this fact, but after not even being able to escape from this problem in his quarters—what with the cracks in the walls and everything—he realized he had no choice but to go ahead, consequences be damned.
Err, I’ll admit I’m not following the reasoning there. Why does how big the part of the universe that we know matter at all? Maybe I’m just missing something (god it’s been ages since I did relativistic physics). Furthermore, since they’re accelerating, and time dilation is thus increasing geometrically (with the acceleration and then necessary deceleration, it’d look like a bell curve when graphed), pure division can’t really work out the math in this case, I thought; calculus rears its ugly head (ugly because Newton’s way of conceptualizing it sucks…I wish we could just have stuck with Leibniz, I find it easy to wrap my head around his conceptualizations but impossible to do Newton).
…and you know who this really sucked for, for those 53 years? Anders, actually. Ellen and Tigh were in love, apparently Tyrol and Tori were too, so those couples were probably off frakking while Anders is sitting in the common area of their transport, sexually frustrated and fiddling with his guitar. Uhhhhh totally didn’t intend that to sound like a euphemism.
To be rational, since apparently the resurrection technology comes from the Five, I’d bet that “boxing” does too, so like most sub-luminal sci-fi space travel plots they were likely in stasis for those 53 years.
Chuck, still listening to the podcast - excellent work btw. I am struck by your understanding of where John/Cavil is coming from in his reaction to being denied improvements by your creator, whom he has control over and is similar to him. We certainly have a great understanding of things, like Gamma Rays, Dark Matter, etc. that we can’t fully “sense”, in the same way John described. For example, the squid eye is “designed” to be far more efficient than the human eye (Sorry, Mr. Darwin). If you had the opportunity to confront your creator about these so-called injustices, would you act with the same pettiness and vindictiveness as John? I am starting to see the whole arc as being manipulated by John because he hates humans as symbol of his own deficiencies. Perhaps his quest for justice for what the Centurians suffered is really just masking his own self-hate.
I brought this up on the Galactica Discussion board, and someone there suggested that I also mention it here. I feel that there was an important clue revealed during “No Exit” that I think many have overlooked… Understandable, given the massive amount of new information we have to digest. So here it is…
When Anders was talking about how they were warned about the coming holocaust on Earth, he says something along the lines of: “The messenger was someone different for all of us. For me it was a woman. For Tory it was a man. No one else could see them.”
Ummm… Head Six and Head Baltar, anyone? I think the best conclusion is that the beings who warned the final five of the coming holocaust are the same ones who have been appearing in the heads of Baltar, Caprica Six, and perhaps other characters (like the Leoben in Kara’s dreams). They claim to be messengers from God, so the “One True God” of the Cylons still has an important part to play, I think. Perhaps the Final Five are actually pawns who intended to break the cycle, but were in fact being used to bring it full circle!
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
LOL! I wonder if Anders just hung out with his head!person, where “hung out” could mean ala Baltar/Six…(part of me thinks we’re going to find out that it was Kara, because of the rumors that there was some kind of “destiny” that drew those two together in the present timeline)
Of course, I think RDM said that all the Cylons are supposed to be somewhat bisexual…they also seem pretty open to threesomes…so maybe Anders wasn’t so bad off after all.
This is what Anders said-“Back on Earth, the warning signs that we got they looked different to each one of us. I saw a woman. Tory, you saw a man. Funny, no one- no one else could see them. Galen, you thought you had-” Then Ishay interrupts.Yep. Same thing I bet. All this has happened before.
I think installing Cylon FTL tech and basically making Galactica into a Basestar are two totally different situations.
Also, on the whole Adama taking pills thing. Does anyone here know anyone about Adama’s age that does not require pills on a daily basis? I think it is just paralleling that Adama and Galactica are so tied together and they are both having aging issues. He is now coming to terms with the fact that he has to take drugs to help out and so does Galactica.
What’s odd is that in BSG the human form “signs” did not show up until after the destruction of The Colonies. So, if they are warnings, it’s about something other than a Cylon surprise attack.
Good call, Lew: that’s where my .25c stake is going…
As the previews for next week’s ep show, it appears that Boomer and Ellen both make it to Galactica. Two questions come to my mind:
How will Chief react to seeing Boomer, given the emotional/intellectual journey that the he’s gone through in the past year?
How will Ellen react to the Tigh/Six union, and their unborn child?
I think one of the over-arching themes of the show has been that we can only be redeemed when we love, and are loved in return without reservation. The 8’s seem to need to be loved very intensely. Can Boomer be saved by renewing her relationship with the Chief? Is there enough love/maturity/understanding for a Tigh-Six-Ellen relationship, where they can all co-exist?
Since it’s this show, I’d say bad things are going to happen.
Eh, when discussing the “Blind Watchmaker” sometimes it’s just easier to use anthropomorphic language…
I’m so confused - why would Ellen have a father???
Because the cylons on erf procreated like humans do - I assume the final five were born of two parents and grew up much like we do. Then when they died in the attacks they were downloaded because they had reinvented that technology.
I’ve just fired up the podcast so I don’t have anything to say about the episode yet, but I felt compelled to come in here to say how adorable Chuck sounded when he said “Happy Valentine’s Day!”
I’m sorry, I’m sappy.
Actually what he said he really didn’t care about was whether or not Ellen and Boomer were chased by the other Cylon(z) during their escape. He was trying to keep the budget low for that show…so they would have more $'s for the finale.
Cavil is lucky his creator didn’t limit him more…like with a 4 year life spam a la Blade Runner. But at least then he’d have something valid to bitch about.
As is, he had free will and decided to use it by becoming a vidictive, vengeful, whinging little dick.
LOL Danny, Sauly, Sammy, Simony, Sharony …
This is all well and good until you get to “Artooey” … see the Clone Wars series. That’s the ONLY problem I have with it

There is no need for stasis or resurrection aboard the Final Five spaceship. We don’t know how close that spaceship got to light speed, so it could take almost any amount of shipboard time for them, beyond certain reasonable limits, to travel the 2000 light years to the Colonies.
Let’s assume the Final Five spaceship accelerated up to 0.99999977 c. At that speed, the calculations at this website show that for every day of shipboard time they would travel 4 light years of distance. In other words, 4 years passes in the “outside world” for every day that passes on board the ship due to the effects of Special Relativity. So the ship would cover 2000 light years in only 500 shipboard days.
Now the aforementioned website uses the silly acceleration of 1000 m/s/s to get up to that speed. Let’s assume the Final Five spaceship is more realistic and can only accelerate at 10 m/s/s (1 Earth gravity), but can do so indefinitely with the magic tylium fuel. It would take them 354 days to get up to 0.99999977 c at that acceleration rate, and another 354 days to decelerate back to normal speeds at the end of the trip.
So if we allow them 708 days to accelerate and decelerate and still allow them a full 500 days to travel the 2000 light years to the colonies, the entire journey for the Final Five would only take about 3 1/3 years aboard their ship even though 2000 years of time passed from the viewpoint of the Colonies of Kobol.
