GWC Podcast #149: Call Show

We didn’t have time for many calls in last Saturday’s BSG 4.5: The Oath podcast, so we added this mid-week show to take twenty of the over 100 calls we’ve received over the last week. Highlights: lots of Zarek vs. Adamlin discussion, some great why-is-Gaeta-doing-this theories, and lots of general listener goodness.

YAY! Can’t wait to get home & listen!

I remember Raffe, Audra!

Now, back to the 'cast…

maybe Pythia for got an “Z” at the end of “dying leader”…

Adamlin (Rosama), the dying leaderZ.

Great show as always, but I gotta say, Tyrol would never be chosen for the coup. He was the one who thought of the FTL drive thing that started this whole coup. PLus hes a cylon.

Maybe if he was human it would work.

i just realized that Roslin has come to terms with EVERY single one of her political oppositions.

First Roslin was at odds with Adama. Now they are hooked up.

Then she was having a hard time with Zerak, and she came to terms with him on New Caprica. At least when they were about to be shot. And for a while after New Crapica, they maintained certain formalities at least.

Then she had a long struggle with Baltar. And first on the baseship, now after the coup, Roslin and Baltar are seeing eye to eye.

I wonder what that says about Roslin. Maybe she is used to fighting with everyone that challenges her first before trying to find a common ground?

Weird BSG Historical connections…

Cylon of Athens [According to Herodotus (c. 484 BC–c. 425 BC)]
Cylon, one of the Athenian nobles and a previous victor of the Olympic Games, attempted a coup in 632 BC with support from Megara, where his father-in-law Theagenes was tyrant. The oracle at Delphi had advised him to seize Athens during a festival of Zeus, which Cylon understood to mean the Olympics. However, the coup was opposed, and Cylon and his supporters took refuge in Athena’s temple on the Acropolis. Cylon and his brother escaped, but his followers were cornered by Athens’ nine archons. According to Plutarch and Thucydides (1.126), they were persuaded by the archons to leave the temple and stand trial after being assured that their lives would be spared.

Here is one that I have posted before about the 13 Constellations of the Zodiac:

The notion of the writers taking liberties to change actual mythology to fit more with the show is something that struck with me. Aurora has been identified as a lord of kobol, but she isnt one of the twelve in Greek Mythology.

I did find it interesting that one of the Olympians is Hestia. And when travelers would go to a new settlement they would take a piece of her hearth with them.
Earth…Hearth…Charbuck…think about it.

As I was listening to our esteemed trio talk about civil disobedience it occurred to me that Zarek and Gaeta went from entry level civil disobedience straight to armed rebellion. It seems like there was tons of steps that could have been taken between the ships’ captains refusing to allowing the installation of Cylon jump drives and starting to kill people on Galactica.

Regarding the story about the guy beating a customer with his leg, I suppose it could have been worse, he could have been armed.

Personally, I wouldn’t really count on Greek mythos to give us the answers. So far, they’ve played pretty fast & loose with the entire Greek panteon & their stories. Sometimes they use it, sometimes they don’t & when they do, it’s never in the way you would think it would be. I think they use them more as a psuedo guide than anything else.

You pretty much pegged it Audra,… upstate-central NY represent!!

(further south than you’ve indicated you’re from however)

B’tor is the pretty one.

I was thinking the exact same thing. If he were human i think he would be a good choice. He has shown great leadership abilities and decision making skills. He can follow the rules of command when he needs to as was shown when they crashed on Kobol. However he made better decision while they were there as well. He has led the civilians on New Caprica and also was an effective leader of the resistance. He knows how to handle himself in combat situations as we can see when he rescues Cally. Also in the same scene it shows that he knows that he has to risk things including himself and Cally, when he tells his men to fire no matter what on the count of 10.

This is, however, all a mute point. He is a Cylon and would never be accepted to lead the human Fleet. I have a feeling that he is in charge of the Cylons Baseship though.

Re: Tyrol as rebellion leader

Yeah, obviously with the lines drawn where they are, he’s not a viable candidate (he’s even the one pushing for Cylon citizenship, which I’m not even sure the Colonial government knows is part of the FTL upgrade deal), but I get where the Trio is coming from. Gaeta had a brilliant plan in terms of how to cut off communications and set things in motion so CIC wouldn’t figure out what was going on until it was too late, but he doesn’t seem to have much of a “well, you’ve got the ship–now what?” plan. Gaeta needs a “man of the people” who is good at organizing and keeping the angry masses of mutineers in line through leadership rather than force, which is what Tyrol excels at. I think that’s what Gaeta thought he was getting in Tom Zarek, but Zarek is covering his own butt, not lending much for direct help until the dust clears and he’s pretty confident of who has won.

Thanks, Kappa! relieved

Here he is in concert - go to time 1:58 for the “brush your teeth” song:

Man, I never realized how cool Raffi really was. Look at the way the kids respond to him! I think the kids in that video were about in my age group.

Edit: I just looked it up and Raffi was/is a Canadian “children’s troubadour.” Maybe the fact that I lived in such close proximity to Canada both as a little kid (in WA) and later (in NY state) I had more access to Raffi than other kids in the U.S.

I’d probably put you around Syracuse, but… E-troit? Lol - Elmira?

When you said those Raffi lyrics on the cast, I knew 'em right away.
We listened to a lot of Raffi when the kids were little.

Now it’s all Hannah Montana, Cheetah Girls, Jonas Brother’s etc.

The puddy-tat got really into Raffi in preschool. Baby Beluga was huge on our playlist! lol!

Yeah, she’s 6 now, and already into those guys… sigh.

Wilford…Brimley…

ok then…back to the podcast…
