GWC Podcast #149: Call Show

Picture the Scene:

A resurrection tub, out bursts Wilford Brimley, A six passes him his glass
Six “Are you okay?”
Wilford: “Yes… I think so. Have you checked your Blood Sugar?”
Looks down…“Y’know… Oatmeal can help lower your cholesterol”

My young childhood was outside of Cleveland - and there was much consumption of Raffi music. Just saying

Um… yeah… I didn’t need that reference from GWC. It brought to mind the image of one of the Bad Santa pictures posted the NSFW thread that had an uncomfortable resemblance to our diabetes-managing oatmeal-pushing friend…

Hey! Don’t talk about Sean that way – I might have to take it personally!

Armando’s call about the “baby shell game” really got me thinking. Cuckoos lay their eggs in other birds’ nests, so that their young are fed and cared for by unknowing host parents. The cuckoo hatchlings even push other eggs out of the nest, and they’re bigger and stronger in general, so they get most, if not all, of the food. Maybe something similar is going on here? Obviously Cylon offspring will have a natural advantage over human children.

I’m also reminded of The Midwich Cuckoos, which inspired the two Village of the Damned movies. And I certainly don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to imagine Hera with glowing eyes and freaky mind powers. :stuck_out_tongue:

I hope everyone’s caught that although Gaeta’s leg might not be up for auction yet, but a related product named “Gaeta’s Stump Butter” actually is here.

Quite appropriate considering that many predict that Gaeta will be toast…

I would imagine that many of the Lady Alpacas would quite appreciate a Bad Santa picture that resembled Sean…

Ah, Audra. There really should be a thread with that title…

Ok, I must type. I was listening to the podcast in bed and ALMOST got up to capture my thoughts. Let’s see what disjointed thoughts remain:

I have been meaning to disagree with Sean on his interpretation that Adama (senior) is all about, or significantly about, the ‘power’ of leading the fleet.
Although he has disdain for the government, I don’t interpret that as being anti-democracy, he’s just not pleased with the current crop of leaders. Having spent the last 8 years with Bush, I would have happily deposed him, but not disposed of the system. I believe Adama is just loathe to relinquish command to people he believes cannot adequately protect the fleet. And he feels responsible for the entire fleet. At this point I wonder if he doesn’t feel responsible for the renegade/final 5 Cylons as well.

Which brings me to a comment on ‘scale’; the fleet is relatively small, Adama relatively competent to lead it. Considering the situation: the unpopular president dead, the new president not up to speed, life threatening situations; small wonder democracy’s not doing so well. Martial law would have been the better choice.

But…it’s too late for that.

Oh, to be a passenger on another ship and see this all from another perspective!

Since there seemed to be confusion about the duras sisters, here they are

Stump Butter - its not just for breakfast anymore

I was listening to another podcast being negative and basically suggesting that the writers were pulling things out of their 5th point of contact when I finally decided to post this for the collective wisdom of this podcast community to consider.

These last episodes of BSG will answer the question of how the final five got to the 12 colonies and why there is a 2000 year time lag (wormhole maybe?). This in turn should answer a bunch of other questions.

The new series Caprica will attempt answer the question of how the final five influence/nudged the scientific community of the 12 colonies to create the Cylons.

Of course I still am contemplating things more specific than that, but I was wondering if anybody else had any thoughts in this direction.

Look out for my new product: “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Stump Butter!”

Ask your local grocer.

Whadda ya mean, “What’s a grocer?”

While I don’t agree in whole, I think that yes, the story will unfold and we will see Ellen (alive/reborn) and we will learn about what happened on Earth and about the Final Five, their link to the SigSeven and about the cycle of time.

Wormhole? I don’t think it is that. I think the cycle(s) will be explained, possibly to include a disruption in the “all before, all again” mantra.

OT to above, but I think the reason CapricaSix and Boomer never got pregnant is simply by practicing safe sex.

Boomer, on Galactica when we met her in the miniseries (1) didn’t know she was a sleeper Cylon; and (2) was involved with a person (Chief) she should not have been involved with. Add to the fact that we don’t know what she and Chief were planning on doing post-Galactica’s decommission, I think it’s reasonable to posit why she wasn’t pregant yet.

For CapricaSix, I don’t see Baltar as the kind of guy who’d let a chick get pregnant. And it would have ruined CapricaSix’s mission regarding Baltar and access to the Colonial Defense system.

Just my two cents…

got your “best in show” reference!!

I was thinking of something similar. I don’t think Adama wants power for it’s own sake, I think, in the past, he felt the weight of most of his decisions. And you have to think that after a year or two of that you would want to give it up and get some rest. And regarding any President, but most especially Rosalin in the beginning, after he recognized that they needed to save the people on the fleet and not fight the Cylons, I have to believe that he thought that everything would be better managed as a military operation. With a very strict chain of command.

In another thread I read that the comment that Zarak made about the Quorum being a hold over from their previous lives and I have to agree with that too. As much as I would not like to live under martial law (or any of the dictator-like situations), I can’t imagine having any truly functional government in this situation. There are too many decisions that must be made on the fly and you can’t take the time to ask everybody’s opinion.

Does this make sense to anyone else?

One other item. Sean, although I agree that Tyrol would not be a good candidate for the mutiny (for obvious Cylon reasons), I entirely agree that he has grown into a great leader that would be capable of leading this fleet. I wouldn’t have said that 3 years ago, but his character has grown so much during that time, and he has displayed the ability to both inspire confidence in himself and his leadership by his actions.

These comments reminded me of a discussion the Crew had quite a few months ago. The remaining population is only about 40,000 people made up of a somewhat random sampling of the populace at large. As we know none of the major political leaders of the Colonies survived the initial attack, and the pool of people to serve as new leaders is like drawing on the residents of a small town. So leaving power to the Quorum is like picking a random small town city council [less than half the size of Frisco, TX (although the actual Frisco council is actually only a Quorum of 6)] and leaving them in charge of decisions that will decide the ultimately fate of humanity. I love democracy and all, but competent representational government is hard work requiring the support of many cultural institutions that were destroyed by the initial attack. As Lee said, there society is more of a gang these days, and maybe democracy just isn’t suitable for them any more.

The Quorum as student government! Whether she’s being specific or general, Starbuccaneer always has the best political analogies.

Hello Smarx and Phil! Thank you for the comeback.

Since I haven’t caught up on the bulk of BSG, I have a question:

When the fleet attempted life on New Caprica, they wound up with Baltar as president, correct? We’ve had worse here, so I’m not too appalled.

Did the government under his ‘term’ work or was there conflcit due to his policies? I assume the Quorum was in place?

If New Caprica became their final home, is it reasonable to assume democracy may have recovered?
