GWC Podcast #102

Oh my, Hamburg is about as far from where I live as it gets to still be in Germany.

A note to Lady D: I finally got to listen to the podcast.

What can I say, I think it’s common knowledge by now that I didn’t especially like the episode and Romo’s part in it, in particular, so obviously I’m disagreeing with a lot of what was said in the 'cast, but I would also like to make it known that I’m sorry about my overreacting comment earlier on, they’re still doing a great job with the podcast, I personally would have liked to have seen a little more of the pointing out the flaws of this episode, but I also respect what a lot of people said about the way they’re treating BSG in that they react to the show as if it would be the real world and don’t talk about the writing etc. very much, I can see that now and I hadn’t been very clear to me before.

That post made me start crying. I really feel you bkitty. My dog Ferris died a few weeks ago and he looked a lot like your g-dog. I’ve been so depressed. I had him since I was 12 and I’m now 25. He was the best and most loyal dog I’ve ever had. I don’t think I’ll ever have another dog like him. :frowning:

On a cheerier note… I’m such a BSG nerd that I named one of my cats Boomer back in like the 1st or 2nd season.

thanks, that works!!

I spend a lot of time harnessed onto and order picker 4 stories in the air, so playing around with my ipod is not something i want to do, this is great cos now I can listen to my two favorite podcasts back to back with no ipod fumbling

that’s a long name.

I can’t make fun of it though, I named my last rescue puppy Britney Spears, just for the fun of talking about her;

“I gotta get home and walk Britney Spears”
“It’s time for Britney Spears’ weekly bath”
“Britney Spears loves when I bring her home some chew treats”

I just had so many ideas, all of which I was froced to self-edit…

Oops, that’s not what I meant, now where is this …

No, that’s also wrong, where did I … ah! Here we go:

While my initial thoughts on this episode have not changed - it seemed disjointed and out of place within the rest of season 4 so far - I do have a better appreciation for the individual stories after listening to the podcast and reading the Frak Party & podcast threads.

Thanks GWCers for helping me make sense of this episode. Here’s to D’Anna kicking butt & taking names in this week’s episode.

Although not the greatest episode out there, I did enjoy the episode. I think I can see some of the things that let it down, though. Personally I think at least a small part of the problem wasn’t so much the flaws themselves, but the expectations that made the flaws more apparent.

The previous episode was well packed, had a major cliffhanger, and was tow weeks previous. So instead of a week’s wait to resolve it, there was a fortnight. Then after that, no resolution after all.

The other expectations were slightly more immediate. The opening post-credits showed that Zarek and Romo were both going to be in the episode. Then Zarek seemed overlooked, and Romo taken in a slightly different direction that wasn’t explained until the closing scenes.

Personally, I sort of like that Zarek has now shown up a couple of times without necessarily taking centre-stage. It’s somewhat more realistic in that, as VP, surely he’d be present at Quorum meetings even when he wasn’t doing a great deal.

Yes, the episode had its flaws. Yes, it wasn’t quite at the same level as the previous one. But I do think that it’ll measure up better in a rewatch or bulk-watch.
Knowing that you’ve waited a fortnight for answers that won’t show up for at least a further week can’t really help the episode’s standing.

I also like that Romo’s motives, as ever, are not entirely clear. When he did finally gear up to putting Lee’s name on the board, I go the distinct impression that it was as obvious to Romo as it had been to me. Which makes me wonder why he went through the whole charade which, in fact, is very ‘Romo’ to me.
Part of me thinks that he went along partly to see if he was wrong, and that someone else would prove viable, or that he wanted to test Lee to see how conscious and how committed his desires were. And it does feel to me that Romo showed Lee that he was subconsciously seeking power, as well as proving that Lee wasn’t the kind to back down from danger if threatened.

BTW, “Hi, I’m new”.
And, yes, I can go on quite a bit. :stuck_out_tongue:

I just want to comment on the common complaint that the Lee(land)-Romo scenes seemed forced because it was so obvious that Lee was going to be made president. Of course, it was obvious to us the viewer. The character is played by a leading actor. Clearly, when Lee stepped down from his military role his story and character had to develop somewhere. He wasn’t going to just be made a bureaucrat which would lead to exciting episodes watching Lee rewriting the health and welfare regulations of the fleet. Many of us on the boards have been speculating since season 3 that Lee would be a good choice to follow Laura as president.

So the question isn’t is it obvious to us that Lee is going to be the president, but is it the obvious choice to the other characters on the show. I submit that it was actually quite the radical choice to nominate Lee. He is the most junior member on the Qo12 and was a vocal critic of the president. He’s had very little actual political experience other than being the president’s military advisor. He also successfully defended Baltar, and probably catches as much flack for that as Romo given that his testimony was broadcast to the fleet. Some probably agreed with him, but many certainly didn’t. He was the commander of Pegasus for a while, but there are also probably a number of civilian captains that have a lot of experience and are well known for their interactions with the civilians. I would have actually felt the episode would have felt forced if they treated Lee as the obvious heir apparent. Basically he’s viewed as a young political novice, that is a clear change from the present administration, that has given a few insightful and high profile speeches, and has an odd name. From our present world situation we know that such a person can generate a clear and devoted following, but it doesn’t become the immediate consensus that he is the obvious choice for the job…

Thanks to Australopythia for first posting this image.

It’s been almost 2 years, and I still get choked up thinking/talking about him.
But better to have had the most wonderful friend, than not at all!

Let’s hear it for our furry buddies!

Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah! <sniff!>

I just want to say to Tigh Fighter and bkitty that I’m so sorry for your losses!

The fur babies in our life only make us better human beings. Love them and remember their love. Someday you may find a new friend that fills your present needs and gives you love that is always needed.

Thanks guys :o

squishies! (as in hugs, GR & Thot!) sigh. craaaap… IYKWIM!

love, me! b!

I completely empathize. A special pet is absolutely unreplaceable. I had a wonderful black lab, Josey Wales. She was at a dog pound in a nearby town. I’d heard of her from a friend who worked for a vet and got emails from local pounds. Josey was a puppy, and I instantly fell in love with her. I paid the fee and took her home the same day.
Josey grew up into a smart, strong, loveable, loyal dog. Even my friends who didn’t like dogs would watch her and say “That dog seems to know what we are talking about…” Josey was just so much a personality in her own right. She was my constant companion.
Josey lived for 17 years. She was incredibly healthy for about 16 of those years, but a couple of strokes took their toll. I had to carry her outside and back. She stopped walking. She lost the sparkle in her eyes. I knew she was hurting badly. My wife has since said that Josey wouldn’t let go because she didn’t want to let me down. I believe it now.
I made an appointment for a vet to come to the house the next morning and put Josey to sleep. That night, I gave Josey a bath and toweled her off, and whispered in her ear that it was ok, she could let go. I stayed by her until about 2 AM.
The next morning I came downstairs, and Josey lay on her blanket. She had passed away in the night. I called the vet and told her that she wouldn’t be needed.
Josey rests in my backyard beneath a homemade granite marker. I was 22 years old when I took her home, and 39 when I laid her to rest. I still can’t think of her without tearing up, but that’s ok. There were so many good times. Good memories. And those make me smile, too.

no more erstwhile best friend stories, I beg of you! I can’t take any more!

I know…sorry, I just started and it wrote itself.
Let’s talk Galactica !! Tory Sucks ! Baltar has God in his pants ! Lee’s hair is goofy ! Romo is still cool !! Jump !!!

yes, Tory does suck. and while we’re on the subject of Tory and her suckage, I think Emily needs a “Tory Sucks” avatar like the one in Stroogie’s tribute video.

I would proudly display that pic as a poster in any room of my house …

Or in the garage maybe, right next to where you keep the lawn mower…

I agree. TopGun’s story got me misty again. Especially sine Ferris was a black lab and pretty much it was the same with the walking and constantly taking care of him at the end.

Thanks for the kind words Audra.

Now back to BSG…

Sing me a song, you’re a peglegged man…
