One thing that worked out AWESOME for me and that may be a little counter-intuitive is popcorn. Not bagged or theater, but made at home in a hotplate style popper. Something like: http://www.amazon.com/West-Bend-6-Quart-Electric-Popcorn/dp/B00004RC6R .

Popcorn’s surprisingly low calorie when you don’t overload it with butter and oil. A popper like this allows you to control the amount of oil you use, and without anything else added on, you’re essentially eating popped grain. I’ve used a 3-quart serving of butterless, lightly oiled, seasoned (pepper, garlic, cayenne, oregano, etc) popcorn as dinner replacement before (but then, I tend toward big lunches). Alternately, stale popcorn makes for a great snack.

Plus, it’s super friggen cheap.

I’m pretty big on Egg Beaters sandwiches. Two slices of Orowheat Double Fiber bread, a half-cup of Egg Beaters, and 2T of Kraft fat-free mayo. 220 calories, very little fat, lots of protein. Makes a good breakfast or pick-me-up later in the day.

Also: I don’t watch Biggest Loser, but saw the final results on the web this week. I find it cool that a number of you (me, too) would have at least ended up middle-of-the-road in the competition based on the weight we’ve lost and how long it took. Geek power!

one way to derail your fitness routine: get the flu :frowning:

think the worst of it was last night only threw up once

today I’m just drained with a bad headache and some body aches, so I at least seem to be recovering pretty fast

hope everyone’s doing good out there

/goes back to bed

I’m feeling pretty tired today but I did go walk on the treadmill and did lower body and core. I get a new strength routine tomarrow. I hope it gives me renewed motivation.

This afternoon I helped my daughter make gingerbread cookies for a cookie party she is going to tonight. I had a couple, now I am finding other things to occupy my time instead of those cookies. I should go shovel the sidewalk.

very proud today, despite being 6 days since my last run and since then having gotten and gotten over the flu I managed to run today and maintain my 9.5 miles!

Christmas Eve…I’m going to shoot for the big 10…call it a preemptive strike on Christmas Day’s dinner

This may seem like a weird question but, what egg beaters? Is it a way to prepare eggs or something you buy?
I need to find new “easy” low cal recipes to get into my daily schedule and I may start with this one… As soon as i have the answer

It’s a egg product that has less (no?) yolk, so it’s healthier or something. It comes in half-pint containers. You’ve probably seen it and just walked by.

You can do the same by carefully breaking actual eggs, but then you’re left with what to do with the yolks and you don’t get the yellow color.

Egg Beaters is egg white with coloring, etc. I’m with Pike, tho – I get it 'cause I don’t want to dick around with separating eggs and throwing away the yolk.

Sans-yolk, eggs are a great source of protein and fat free.

Bottom line: it looks like egg and tastes like egg, but no fat/cholesterol.

We always keep a container of Egg Beaters on hand for Shooter Jr and myself. Mrs Shooter even uses them for cooking sometimes. A 1/4 cup equals one egg for recipes.

holy crap…I’ve always done it the hard way

I’VE WASTED MY LIFE!!!

hey fitness group, how’s everyone been doing?

I only did 9.1 miles today…and its not because I couldn’t go any further

there’s something wrong with my treadmill :frowning:

I got to 7.7 miles then the computer reset, had to start it back up right away

then it got to 1.4 miles and did the same again

the sudden stopping really surprised me each time and shocked my heart into really pounding hard, I decided it was best to just stop

my ipod touch also started acting up right around the same time, it keeps acting like I’m trying to turn it off and I have to keep hitting cancel, it doesn’t do this non stop just when I’m browsing sometimes it will come up, not really sure whats going on with that?

I started a new strength routine last week and it has been kicking my tush however I was cruising right along. Now I am sick, coughing, sore throat and ear ache. ick.

ugh I got sick last week too, I hope you have a swift recovery and are able to enjoy the holiday though!

hope you guys aren’t slacking out there!

enjoyed my last vacation day today, oh and I ran 10 MILES TODAY!!!

Not slacking – but glad for the encouragement nonetheless! Thankfully Saturday was a scheduled off day for me anyway, so no problem there. Stayed on track meal-wise, too, heavy on the turkey and light on the stuffing.

I did have half a piece of tiramisu today, but looks like I’ll still end up under 20% fat cal for the day, so not a problem. It’s the first cake/pie/etc I’ve had since the March meetup.

Hope everything’s going well for everyone! I keep telling myself that healthy isn’t a diet – it’s a lifestyle. Working hard on living it, as I know everyone here is.

that’s pretty much it, ‘diets’ never work because people just end up putting back on what they’ve lost, but changing to a healthy lifestyle will help you lose and then maintain that weight

glad to see you stuck with it Chuck, holidays, ESPECIALLY Thanksgiving and Christmas can be the real daggers in a healthy lifestyle, I managed to make it through Christmas Day not too bad, only had 3 Christmas Cookies and the only appetizers I touched was the veggie bowl, had some turkey and bratwurst (had to have the bratwurst its Christmas Tradition in my family) and one small scoop full of potatoes for the meal

I’ve lost 8 pounds since Halloween. I’m having a somewhat hard time getting momentum with it, probably because of the combo of hypothyroid disorder and antidepressants.

I’m also building up a new strength training routine. My goal is to get light exercise for at least 20 minutes every day, do full cardio twice a week and full strength training twice a week. Generally, I can do the light exercise daily plus 2 long workouts per week with no problem, but getting the 3rd and 4th in is a challenge.

I have 3 fitness goals for the first half of 2011:
[ol]
[li]Mental Heath: Get off the antidepressant meds. Requires help of a doctor but that’s what health insurance is for, right?
[/li][li]Physical Strength: Start running again. Work up to 3 miles by my birthday (June)
[/li][li]Continue Weight Loss: Slow and steady is just fine. Like Dory says, “just keep swimming, just keep swimming…”
[/li][/ol]

I lost 35lbs last year and the goal for this year is 20lbs.

Welcome Starbuccaneer and SafairBob! Always good to see some fresh faces in here, hope you’ll stay with us!

both of your goals seem reasonable and good, if you’re looking for some work out ideas, group support, or anything in between be sure to stop in, we’re all here to help each other out!

After seeing Chuck and Audra at the last meetup I was really inspired to finally get serious again about my health. It was about a month after I got back that I found a gym and trainers that I really liked and signed up for some weight lifting classes.

I started out going three times a week and now I’m up to four, and I try to do some cardio every time I’m in the gym. I’ve been pretty consistent and I dropped about twenty-five pounds so far. I fell of the wagon this week but starting on Monday I’m going to get right back on.

I think I got the exercise part of the process under control, now all I have to do is start eating healthier and saying no to too many sweets.

I’m hoping I can lose another twenty pounds before the 2011 Meetup and to have reached my goal weight by the 2012 Meetup! I’ve been trying to think of something fun I can do when that happens, I think I’d like to find a costume I could wear, like the R2D2 swimsuit, or a Tron bodysuit. Maybe the GWCers can help me out here with suggestions.
