"Fitness Club" Thread

I think December tripped a lot of us up. I know my training fell behind. Glad to see your getting back on track. One think I’ve learned from Weight Watchers is letting go of the guilt. I will eat whatever I want this weekend at Disneyland for my half marathon. But because I’ve been taking care of myself, I won’t grab as much junk as I used to, but I’ll sure enjoy the junk I do eat!

Damn! Wish I’d known it was this weekend!! We’ll be out of town :frowning: Good luck, tho! Go Dawnie!!!

I’d say good luck, Dawn, but with all your training you don’t need it.

So I’ll just say “have fun!” And let us know how it goes.

Hey Chuck, it’s safe to say the distance traveled and the heart rate meters are accurate on the treadmills though right?? I worry much about the heart rate, being asthmatic and all anything I can do to be intense but be safe breathing-wise I’m all about (which is why it’s always been challenging to find good cardio and non-hockey sports to play to keep me motivated)

Damnit, you beat me! I don’t think I’ll be ready for a 13.1 until the spring, but weather here in the northeast doesn’t allow for a lot of road-time for certain weeks, and I don’t trust treadmill-stamina versus road-stamina worth a hill of multivitamins.

You GO, mama!

Go, Dawn, Go! You’re amazing. Seriously. Hope you recover in style with a beer and a big bowl of pasta

Been at or under 225 for over a week now…played about 29 minutes of ice time last night, had my first assist of the season a hilarious moment where the goalie tried to slide and cover my teammate, he stopped dead, my teammate steps around me and stuffs in the goal, and playing harder and faster then ever…my God this stuff is WORKING!!!

WOLVERINES!

I have spent more time shopping for cycling gadgets than I have actually cycling this week. This needs to change.

Between the post holiday/ I just turned 40 blah’s, and being sick for the last week, I have not been to the pool in almost 2 1/2 weeks. Ugh. I’ve got to get over this Plague, so I can get back on track! cough-wolverines-cough

Got back onto the wagon and have been doing my runs and other related exercises. I quit the gym to save money but I brought myself a 16kg kettlebell. So now I’ve been learning how to do Turkish Get ups, kettlebell swings and other fun stuff that you can do with a weight.

It’s all good and slowly going down in weight.

I’ll check in soon

Regards

I’m glad to hear that you’re still working out even though you had to leave your gym. I’m lucky that the one I go to is pretty affordable.

I’ve been making progress since the beginning of the year, but I’m also spending more on gym classes and healthy food, and I’m starting to feel the crunch financially. I know that you don’t really need to spend a lot of money to workout, but I’ve found a gym and a program that works for me and I don’t want to upset my routine, so I feel I have to stay with it for now. I’m telling you, rich people have no excuse for being unhealthy.

Okay, I have officially signed up for a gym and been going for two weeks. I tried walking and blew out my knee. Walking was a bad decision at that point–I hurt my knee last year, never went to PT for it, and injured it again on vacation + swelling from the flight to and from Vegas.

So I’ve been biking until I get the swing of that and then I’ll be adding stuff to that slowly. Also, cooking at home! I’m pretty good on that, except for a couple of days this week because I’ve been sick. Also tonight is date night so we’re going to the movies and going for sandwiches before. Me and the husband have been trying to prop each other up on this and reinforce good behaviors and seriously, cooking blogs are my porn.

Congratulations Sithwitch, and sorry about the knee. I hurt mine a little and it really sucks and it takes a while for it to feel normal again. I usually use the elliptical machine for cardio and it’s easier on my knees than the treadmill.

Hey guys- a friend of mine posted her new Road ID on facebook and it got me thinking. There are a lot of us who practice fitness in an outdoor environment, often alone. Call me a mother hen, but I think it’s a good idea to have some form of ID on, or at least nearby.

When I was 10, I got my first military ID. My Pop drilled into my head the need for me to have it on my person AT ALL TIMES. Especially when I began going to school in the city (we lived on Governor’s Island, NY). To this day, I am adamant about my family having ID at all times. I still quiz Puddy about what I’m wearing, what Daddy’s wearing, etc., if we’re going to be in a crowded or uncertain situation. Call me paranoid, but she’s pretty good by now about storing those facts on the fly.

It doesn’t have to be this product, but the idea is a good one. You can always get one of those pet tags and have it engraved on the cheap!

Whew. Sorry about the psa, but it occurred to me to share the info with people I care about. Now this mother hen can get the cluck out of here!

I feel ya on the knee…I tore my MCL back in 2001, and it took me eight months to put skates on and a full year to be brave enough to play hockey again after…it’s a slow process

my problem this weekend’s a bit more mental…had my big twice a year tournament (my #1 motivator to get on the treadmill every day), was up 8-4 in the middle of the 3rd period and let five shots in a row go between my legs…not only upset by the choke job I pulled in my personal semi-annual Stanley Cup, I felt double betrayed by the legs I’ve worked so hard to condition…it took a LOT of work to get back on that treadmill this morning…anyone got some tips for re-gaining the mojo when your motive seems to pull the rug out from under you?

SW, glad to hear things are going well ('cept for the knee, which will heal).

One thing that my trainer has always told me – which I think is kick-ass advice, btw – is that there’s no reason you have to give up your choice or your tastes just because you want to give up unhealthy food. He suggests thinking about it in terms of adding new cool things to eat and choosing them rather than denying yourself the old stuff. I know that sounds like just the other side of the same coin, but it really does help me.

Noticed that you’re coming to the meetup. It’ll be good to catch up there, and Mitch (my trainer and new podcast co-host!) will be there as well, at least for the Wolverines Fitness roundtable on Sat and likely other times as well.

I was in Weight Watchers for a while a year or two ago, and this was invaluable advice. If left to our college habits, me and the husband will stick to pizza, burgers, and ready-made pasta for every meal, which is… not good. So what I’ve been trying to do is either look for something that gets me jazzed up about cooking or find an ingredient that looks interesting and then google as many recipes as I can to use it up, which is why we ate kale for about a week and a half a little bit ago.

Also, walked around a mall for four hours yesterday with minimal pain in my knee  I don’t know I’ll try the treadmill again on the next gym trip, but I’m going to move off of the bike for sure. Elliptical machine, please don’t destroy me!

Just a quick update since I haven’t posted for a while. I took about a month off from the gym due to moving and having a crazy work schedule. But as of Thursday I am back to working with a trainer 2x a week. So excited to be back! I hope everyone is doing well and kickin ass in the new year!

Hells, yes. Go get 'em, tigress!
