"Fitness Club" Thread

But as of Thursday I am back to working with a trainer 2x a week. So excited to be back! I hope everyone is doing well and kickin ass in the new year!

I’m glad you’re finding time for yourself again. I’d heard before I started working out that persistence is the most important thing, but I didn’t realize how many times I’d start and stop, and then start and stop again. Go you! Wolverines!

So I had to go back to Army camp for fitness training (it’s for people who can’t pass the fitness test) - and yesterday was the first session, which IS the said fitness test. I failed only the running segment of the test… But my pull-ups were also sucky.

Anyways, I tried to enrol for the weight loss programme, which the PTI said I don’t qualify (Read: I’m not technically obese!)

Yay!

I did 46 miles on my mountain bike Sunday, took 4:36 and my legs felt pretty damn good. Starting back at the gym is paying off, the legs weren’t even sore Monday.
My lower back hurt like a mofo after about 3 hours though, so maybe I should do more core work and hit yoga once in a while.

Anyone ever had judo training where you use your back to crawl across the length of the dojo? Is it good for the back? Does it work?

Holycrap! 4 mins 36 secs? That’s like a racecar!!! Heheheh… ^_*

Be careful how you train your back - I had medics in army camp tell me stories about guys who overstrained and ended up contorted backwards (Think: Exorcist) due to muscle spasms. It’s no joke.

I discovered MovNat which is all about functional fitness. Our bodies are meant to jump, climb, run, crawl, etc but we have become a society that sits, sits and sits some more. MovNat is about using your body the way is was intended to move. I was able to attend a local MovNat workshop a couple of weeks ago and had so much fun. We focused on balance that day and did simple stuff like walking on a 2 x 4 while holding a 10# sand bag on one shoulder, tossed pvc pipes to each other while balancing on the 2 x 4, walked sideways on the 2 x 4 while pretending to craw overe and under longs (kind of a side lunge thing) suit case carries woth kettlebells, walked while we held a slosh tube overhead, crawled around on the floor, and I did a 75 lbs dead lift. I was super excited about it and it was really fun! I worked up a sweat too. I told my huband and daughter all about it and they thought it sounded like fun too. (My husband had to work and my daughter is 13 and the organizers wanted it to be 18 and over) We are going to convert our garage into a home gym but use the ideas of MovNat for equipment. I’ve been checking out Craigs List for big old tractor tires to move around. I am really excited about it.

Have any of you gotten involved in the MovNat or crossfit communities? We are also eating a paleo diet due to my own food issues. Anyone here living a paleo or primal lifestyle? I’ve never read anyone talking about it and was just curious.

I posted about the MovNat workshop on my blog if you are interested. It’s about the 4th post down on the current front page.

MovNat looks interesting, but it’s way out of my price range. If can find a low-cost alternative I’ll try it. Sometimes I think I’d like to try parkour, but I realize that I’d probably die.

fit2play, a neat-o local gym, brought in a MovNat workshop from southern California. They held a 7 hour long workshop that was something like $229. I didn’t think I could handle that and it was to rich for me right now. ( I am trying to surprise my daughter with a trip to mermaid camp this summer) However I did find 2 local meetup groups that do MovNat style workouts that do not cost anything. Just folks getting together, sharing information and moving. I’m really looking forward to going to one in the park this summer. Crawling over and under benches, jumping over logs, crawling in the grass, it should be lots of fun.

Parkour does look fun but I’m with you, I would fall on my head and break it.

My daugher has gotten me interested in hooping. Think hula hooping with style and fluid grace, except when I do it. I feel like an idiot doing it but it is a great core workout. We have a local hooping group that meets in the park. Its gals, guys, moms and kids, everyone is really friendly and some of these folks are amazing to watch.

My most favorite thing right now is deadlifts!

What is mermaid camp?

Are you familiar with Weeki Wachee in the Florida? The city of live mermaids? They are free divers and SCUBA certified gals that put on a fin and bikini top and do a 30 minute underwater show. It kind of cool. I went as 13 or 14 year old and thought it was awesome. My daughter has always had a thing for mermaids and has been looking them up on youtube. There is am amazingly large number of women making and wearing mermaid fins and then swimming around in pools and recording it. I told her about Weeki Wachee and we looked them up online and found out they have a mermaid camp where the girls learn the water ballet, get to wear a tail and participate in a show. The camp age range is only 11-14 and she will be 14 in May so this is the last year can can participate. We are hoping to give it to her as a birthday gift. She is so spoiled.

Here is the Weeki Wachee website if you want to see the mermaids, and who doesn’t want to see mermaids?

Is anyone planning on working out during the meetup weekend? Do we want to try and get a weekend pass somewhere? Or does the Aloft have a workout room?

Actually I think this answers our question

Nice looking pool too…gonna have to dig up my swim suit…

The hub and I have been doing Bootcamp (crossfit program) together for over a year, he started a year before talking me into it, too, lol!

I have not felt this fit or confident about my whole body movement since my 20’s (I’m now 45).

Every quarter our trainer, Brian, puts on a 21 Day Challenge. 21 days in a row, 1 hr intense training per day, with Sunday as our ‘easy’ day of a hike or yoga (not easy, but fun!).

Though my weight had little decrease (I wasn’t fully facing my consumption), my body shape has undergone noticeable change. My clothes fit differently, I discovered I had a waist, and my buns, underneath all this fluff, are solid steel! LOL!!

I drive a mobility aid (wheelchair) bus. It’s an 8+5. This means it can accomodate 8 butts (really only 4) and 5 chairs. Currently, on regular days I transport 10 chairs, and early-out day 15. That’s a lot of squats and agility required of me. It really is a workout in itself when I have a full boat, and I can’t believe how much easier it is now, than it was in my 20’s!

Every 21 Day Challenge, Brian ‘raffles’ off a Vitamix and other prizes to all who participated. This last challenge, I WON IT!! happy dance

Since then, I’ve been doing a meal replacement smoothie every morning during my work week, and often on the weekends (you really miss it!).

My usual ingredients are: carrot, celery, red bell pepper, cabbage, almonds, frozen sweet potato, banana (frozen usually), 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 scoop protein powder, 1/4 tsp super or very green powder.

I also made a breakfast biscuit for Puddytat and The Hub, of soyrizo or reduced fat breakfast sausage, egg & cheese on biscuit.
Each is only 308 calories. I’ll be posting it in the cookbook thread.

Thanks so much to everyone who posts in this thread! You truly inspire me to keep on with my fitness- especially when I hit the blahs.

You mean the world to me!

WOLVERINES!!

Heello, I’ve been away for a long time but I thought I’d check in with you lot again.

On Monday evening I was enjoying a quiet few beverages, as is my wont, when I Started feeling weird, I’ve been getting the odd dizzy spell every now and again but I’d been ignoring it, stupid I know but it’s what I did. This particular evenign I Was feeling rally really bad though, so I abandoned thee beverages and decided to ring my Doc the following day and make an appointment. having got a late evening one (16:40) I turned up at 16:30 and waited… and waited… and eventually, at 17:!5 when I was standing up to go I was called in, I described my symptoms and she sent me in to the nurse to be checked out, my blood pressure was taken and there was the shocker … 173 over 113. The doc booked me in for a 24 bp monitor to bee fitted the following day, people were rung, appointments were cancelled so I could be squeezed in.

My BP remained fairly high through the day and also still somewhat elevated at night. I saw the doc the following day, in all honesty expecting blood thinners and/or beta blocks to be prescribed, she told me while it was high it wasn’t yet dangerously so and I should make “major lifestyle changes” and repeat the BP monitor (at a cost of €60) in 6 weeks time.

So here I am, diet has been changed and I’ve dropped 4 pounds already but I need to not only lose at least another 40 I also need to keep it off and stop myself from falling in to bad habits. I’m hoping to pleasantly surprise the doc with the progress I make between now and April 17th but I’d appreciate any support from you nice people.

So here’s the stats (approximate)
Current weight 16 stone 10 1/4 (or 234 pounds)
Tummy measurement - roughly 45.5 inches

Target weight: 13 stone even or roughly 182 pounds but I’d bee happy with 190 to be honest

I’ve tried this before and I kind of fell of the wagon, both in the alcohol terms and in the food terms, time to get back on and try again. wish me luck.
Alan

I kinda got off my gym schedule with going to California, but I got an awesome mtb ride in today. The gps on my new phone works pretty good, too.

Last week I made it to all my workouts, so I’m happy. This week is a little iffy between work and getting ready for the meetup (yay!) but I’m going to try and make it to a few classes and do cardio.

We support you phazedout, and kudos for taking an active role in your health. I know from personal experience that there’s nothing that’s more important, so go do whatever it is you have to do so you live a long time. Even just walking everyday will improve your health dramatically. Wolverines!

Bkitty: your cross fit/boot camp class sounds fun! While I enjoy seeing the numbers on the scale move down my ultimate goal is changing my body composition. Congrats on all of your changes.

phazedout: I’m glad you decided to see your doctor. Congrats on your current changes and I am sure you will impress your docotor with your co tinued success.

Nike: awesome!

After hearing Chuck talk about MyNetDiary on the FitSmart podcast I decided to try it our myself. I’ve been finding it rather enlightening to keep a food diary. I might be off on the precise calories here and there, but just seeing each days food laid out makes it much easier to see what’s going on. Also seeing how effective exercise is, compared to what I eat, has been very motivating.

The meetup is almost over for me and I haven’t done any cardio, but I know I’ll be getting right back in the gym when I’m home. It was really great meeting Chuck’s trainer and he’s the nicest guy. I must find a way to apologize for calling him Steve, since his name is Mitch. I feel so motivated right now, I want to make sure I make even more progress for the next meetup.
