Good luck! Yes injuries can suck, and being overzealous and trying to make up for lost time can wind up causing further injuries. So take it easy…
indeed, still incredibly frustrating only being able to do a fraction of what I could do a year or two ago though
I am finishing up my first real week back in the gym, last week was mostly physical therapy. I tore a pectoral muscle two weeks ago… Yeah, it sucked bad.
So my upper body is needless to say behind schedule but my legs are doing pretty good. I pushed them really hard today so I could hit another landmark and boost my morale, and it worked.
I leg pressed 700 lbs!!!
HOOOOOOORRAAH!
Congrats.
I’m trying to lose some weight. I’m down to 221, from 228. I’d like to break to 200 barrier. We’ll see.
Thanx, if you are doing excerising along with a diet don’t get hung up on your weight. It can work against you. Muscle weighs more than fat, so if you are working out you may actually gain weight even though you are burning fat.
Body shape is more important than body weight. I am sure your wife would agree with me…
Good Luck!
^ Definitely. I’ve stopped paying attention to my weight. I went from 250 lbs to 205, then started doing weight training last summer with my coworkers. Now I weigh 220 but I’ve gone down a pant size in that same amount of time. I probably could have gotten under 200 had I not started lifting, but I actually look and feel much better with the added muscle. So yeah, don’t get too hung up on the weight. Judge it by how your clothes fit and how you look.
A friend of mine has a bathroom scale that also does body fat measurements. You step barefoot onto metal contacts to have it measure your body fat. I don’t know how accurate they are, but paying attention to body fat percentage seems like a better strategy than your weight, if you’re adding muscle.
One of the trainers where I work out with my coworkers told me about her fitness-junkie uncles, and how they bring their spinning bikes to each other’s houses on Sundays and ride the entire game, with a break at halftime. I got inspired and decided to do some high-incline walking on my treadmill during the Bears game the past two weeks. I’ve only done the 2nd half both times, but it’s harder than you’d think. I’ve hit 80 minutes both times, and at an 8% to 10% incline that’s one hell of a workout. It beats my normal football-watching routine (snacking and beer drinking), and is much healthier too. If any of you have access to a gym on game day, I highly recommend doing something like this.
Wow, I had no idea there was a GWC fitness thread going…
Arch : great idea on the bike during the game on Sundays. I’m going to try and dust off the rollers and see if I can still ride steady enough to give make a serious go of it on my road bike. Second half sounds like a good start, or maybe a hockey game first
I have one of the body-composition capable scales, but find that it’s a bit unreliable compared to asking the nice folks at the front of the gym if I can use the more expensive one that the trainers have access to.
Omra : I totally agree with the focus on shape not weight. Weight alone can mess with your head, especially if you feel better and look better! …and GRATS on the crazy leg press!
It’s been a big year for me, going from around 270 in Feb down to around 180, then packing on a bit more muscle and sitting around 190. Better diet with lots of cardio on the elliptical followed by weights, and then some longsword / broadsword & buckler fencing a couple nights a week. Seriously cuts into my EVE/WoW time and sleep, but it’s been worth it!
Unless there is a more up to date thread regarding fitness, I thought I would chime in with my fitness goals/progress.
I’ve started in August at a weight of 20 stones (280lbs) and since then I’ve lost 42lbs so now I’m at the weight of 17 stones (238lbs). So that’s about an average of 2lbs per week.
Other than that, it’s been good - I’ve done it with Capoeira type exercises, some running, some weight training and a good focus on diet (making sure I weigh the food and know how much cals are in the food (not to an obsessive point, but enough to know what I’m eatting).
I’ve gone from 46" waist to 38" waist and I’ve shrink 2 shirt sizes. Just need to get a good weight program and really get the metabolic fires burning.
Hey Amberite, you’re an Eve player AND a cyclist? Me too.
Good work Montana, 2 pounds a week is a good rate. If you lose too much per week your body will think there is a famine going on and lower your metabolisim in an effort to store fat. Which would only make it even harder to lose weight.
Of course if you are doing a little weight training you may be burning more fat than you realize, because you might be putting on a little muscle. And muscle weighs more than fat, so you may even reach a point where you can see your waistline shrinking and yet you are not losing any weight.
Kudos!
Heya Edoz! I came to cycling first through some mountain biking, then really seriously through triathlon in my pre-college days. Still love it. Sweet frame on your wordpress blog - true artistry my man!
My primary ride is still my old Kestrel carbon fiber ride, but I have a nude aluminum crit frame sitting around waiting for some love. I keep lurking on ebay for a decent campy grupo I can afford, but damn.
way to go Montana!
I’m also happy to announce that as of tonight I’m back up to running 6.5 miles, and am on pace to be back at my old personal high of 8.5 miles by Christmas!
going to start doing a few of the P90X weight trainings during the week too, still plenty of work to do to lose the weight I put on the last year
Went to the gym for the first time in a month, it was not as bad as I thought it might be. Nanowrimo chewed up all of my free time during November, and screwed up my diet as well. I did not put on much weight but I am definately out of shape, I figure it will take about a month to get back into the routine.
Plus I am getting damned pale as well…
Great job at committing to getting back to the gym Omra, esp with NaNoWriMo!! I find that if I take a bit of time off, I’m always really apprehensive about getting back into serious training, but like you I find that it’s never as bad as I feared! I hear the same thing from a lot of other guys I work out with too, so I’m betting its a pretty common misconception.
Darth, Awesome with the running and PX90. I have a ‘thing’ (mental block, fear, whathaveyou) against chin-ups, but PX90 really drives results. Keep it up!!! Keep updating the threat with your mile count, and we’ll all encourage you on your way to hitting 8.5 miles!!
thanks! I hit 8 miles today! took a 5 hour energy about an hour before the run and it did wonders! that and my legs weren’t burned out from working all day
not only that but I now fit into a one size smaller jeans than I did a month and a half ago!
didn’t do any P90X this week though, I really need to get into that, usually I like to lift and hate to run but this time it seems like its the other way around, I know I need to get into the strength training again to really burn more plus have more leniency in my diet
keys right now are I need to eat a bit healthier and do more strength training (usually I’m fine during the week but then the weekend comes and its splurge time!!! )
how’s everyone else doing? I’m thinking we’ll all need to support each other, especially during the holiday season coming up (darn you Christmas cookies!!!)
Affordable Campy? Lol
Yeah, I know… but every once in a while you get lucky
Awesome Darth!!! I totally get the ‘weekend’ paradox - good all week, but once I get out of a nice excercise/healthy eating routine on the weekend
And yeah, its definitely cookie season out there, and add in new WoW xpac, and the typical year-end crapstorm at the office (btw [Crapstorm] is apparently an aoe effect with brutal sustained dps), and its harder than ever to maintain a strong fitness plan! So I’m totally on board with Alpaca’s supporting each other!!
How’s everyone else doing??
so tonight…idk why…I guess I just got in a rythem and got to my 8.5 miles!!!
to be fair my other 8.5 miles a couple years back was running outside and tonight’s was on a treadmill but considering its december in Wisconsin…yeah I won’t be running outside! =P
my legs are really burned out now though, was standing all day at work too, oh well this calls for heading to bed early I think!
did half of a P90X weight routine yesterday, hopefully I can get through a full one tomorrow
grandma’s birthday is on saturday…there’s always such good food there, gonna be a tough day =O
what have you been up to Amberite? eating healthy I hope!!!
Way to go Darth!!! 8.5 miles is Ossim!!
