Everyone is doing great! Keep it up!

I’ve been lurking on this thread for a few months now. You guys are so inspirational to me. I think it is important to me to post on here regularly because I feel like I need to be accountable to others and get support. Over the last few months I have seen family members suffer and nearly die from complications from obesity. I do not want to end up like that. Over the last 10 years I have seen my weight slowly climb upwards on the scale. Now at 31 I have hit a point in my life where I can longer put my own health in second place to other things in my life.

I have started eating healthier; I am on a diet plan and have started exercising regularly. So far I am down 9 pounds. I don’t have a weight goal, I have a fit goal. It’s been slow going lately but I am going to keep at it.

Thanks DR!! (is my exit wound showing? mind blown.)

Pike, I think my face froze in fascinated horror.

Why mess up perfectly good BACON?!! WHY???

lol!

Yay, Baco! Ya pumpkinhead! I’m going for fitness with a side o’ weight loss, too! Welcome!

hey Bacon! Welcome aboard! I think in the end thats what everyone’s goal here is, to get healthy, and we look forward to helping you along the way!

Glad you’re joining in Aimee! Keep up the good work all!

As I was on the treadmill tonight I was thinking about how much a good playlist on your music device of choice (insert i-Whatever or what have you here) can contribute to your workout, especially running or walking. I know that a lot of people might like more modern stuff than I’d pick, and we’ve all got different tastes, but if we put them all together…could be awesome!

In that vein I figured I’d share a few of my favorite songs (and why they work for me) and encourage y’all to do the same here. I bet together we can come up with one kickass Official Wolverine Playlist.

  1. I usually start with “Halo Theme Mjolnir Mix”, it starts off slowly and has that great Halo theme mixed with some nice electric guitar tracks dubbed over. Wakes me up!

  2. “Storming New Caprica” (from Exodus Part 2) This almost 8 minute Bear McCreary piece is full percussion, drums and again, starts slowly and quickly builds up with the power of… well… the Galactica falling out of the frakking sky. I use it when I want to boost the speed on the treadmill for a few minutes and really kick in the burn.

  3. Aerosmith’s “SOS (Too Bad)” and “Train Kept A Rollin”, both pretty sweet rockers that I like matching pace with.

That’s three. If we each contribute we could have a pretty decent list, right?

It’s so great that you’re taking steps to becoming healthier Baconface, it’s really worth it.

Has exercising finally become ‘routine’ for you or do you still have to fight yourself to go do it?
Darth

It’s a little bit of both. It’s hard to find the motivation to go outside when the temperature is below zero so I can workout. There have been mornings when I sat in my car outside my gym and seriously contemplated just turning around and going home.

And on some days (usually when it’s warm) going to the gym is no problem at all. That’s one of the reasons why I can’t wait for summer. I think that it’s getting easier and easier as time goes on.

For me, becoming more organized really helps. Having my gym bag packed and ready the night before, and knowing ahead of time what I’m going to eat and which snacks I’m going to have during the day are important. I know everyone does it differently, but I think it would be impossible for me to do this fitness thing without a serious plan.

Did 90 minutes of cardio tonight. I’m off to watch an ep of Stargate before bed as my treat.

WOOSH

ETA- Nike!!! hugs

So I’ve been busy with eatting right and going the the gym.

I’m at 222lbs now, so that’s a -1 loss from last week, and a -16lb loss since the start of the year and -58lbs in total. The weight is going down and the strength levels are steady, so it’s all good.

This week has been mainly the Spartacus workout on monday - although I still haven’t finished 3 rounds, I tend to finish at the end of 2. I also did a 1.2 mile run in the morning. I think I may go back to the Couch to 5K again to get me up to running 2+ miles again.

Yesterday was a Chest/Back/Triceps and Biceps day where I did drop sets starting with a good heavy weight (e.g 22kg dumbells on bench press). Then after each set, I dropped the weight and continued to pump out the reps until I got to approx 10kg and was really struggling to lift it. I did this for all of the muscle groups.

Tonight is going to be the Spartacus workout again and possibly some cardio and then on Thursday, it’s going to be a heavy leg day.

Clothes wise, I’m doing good, the shirts are loose, the pants are not tight (esp the 38" - which I’ve just fitted into). I also feel tighter and smaller, so it’s all good.

I know what you mean regarding going to the gym, it’s when I’m actually in the process of going that it seems to be a case of Urgh, but once I’m there, then it is fine.

PS. What do people generallyhave for breakfast/lunch… I tend to have omelette and a slice of toast/crumpet for breakfast and some version of a salad/leftovers for lunch followed by a decent dinner. Seems to work well as it’s like I’m banking the calories to have later. Doesn’t make me feel so deprived.

I think I need to get more structure into the body part training as I think I respond well to high volume, heavy weight/low reps.

Got my doctors appointment next week, so it shall be interesting to see what he says about my operation going forward.

Also welcome to Baconface and Audra…

well Bishop usually I’ll have some kind of healthy cereal, my big one is regular granola (no extra like raisins or anything in it) with skim milk, good amount of protein and it fills me up and then I’ll have a small to medium glass of OJ with it

though sometimes I’ll treat myself to a couple eggs with toast

Congrats on your weight loss! I either have eggs, oatmeal or a protien shake for breakfast. I find the protien makes me feel better during the day and have more energy. However there is nothing more filling than warm oatmeal on a cold morning.

Hey all. Had another good cardio day yesterday. did an hour on the elliptical thanks to the cute girl on the treadmill in front of me. Did a lot of assisted chin ups and back as well. Woke up today and it feels like I took a bat between the shoulder blades so I’m taking the day off. Gonna cook up some brown rice and chicken and have a “take it easy day.”

I love those epic mealtime videos. Every one of them is a winner.

The guy at the gym said that using the whey protein powder is not just for gaining muscle, but helps with weight loss too so I’m gonna experiment with that stuff. They seem to be selling it everywhere. I bought a small bag at the grocery store - cookie & cream flavor and had a couple shakes at work. Seemed quite filling.

Keep up the good work everyone.

Hello All!

So i have yet to post here for some reason or another but now i have a reason to post my first big accomplishment. A few months ago my buddy Matt sent me a message wondering if i would be interested in running the Gasparilla 5k which happens every year in Tampa. I had been trying to train for a 5k before on and off and going to the gym fairly regularly but really i had hit a plateau. I also had no set goal other than to run an eventual 5k at some point in the future. However once i accepted his invitation I had an end goal which helped a ton.

With that end date I knew i had to put up or shut up. So i started re-using the Couch to 5k ap on my ipod to train with. My training wasn’t as consistent as it could have been and i did let my gym membership lapse but i still went out and ran approx 2 to 3 days a week. Lo and Behold it became easier and easier to make the runs. I had to repeat some of the weeks on the ap because some of the changes were just to much to handle. Still a week away from the race the longest i had ever run was about 1.8 miles or so. I was going however running for 28 minutes at a time with 5 minutes of warm up walking before and after. I was still had about 2 weeks left in the training program. I decide that i set a goal for myself that was reachable. i wanted to try and finish the 5k in under an hour. For me that would be a great accomplishment. i am normally a very slow walker and have never been much of a runner. And i knew from my training that i was well within the pace to make my time.

I decided on the Sunday before the 5k to see if i could make it. Just a low key test of my abilities to see how far i could go. Well that day running in y neighborhood i was able to make the 5k run in just over 48 minutes. I did have to walk some but i did make it and it felt great. I had also not only beaten my goal time but demolished it. I knew i would be ready.

Come race week. i was super busy at work so i would not have much of an opportunity to run much nor did i want to go out and over exert and/or hurt myself. I just went on a couple 1 mile runs to stay limber (also setting personal record times each time and running the fastest i have ever done in my life). My sister Galaxy_Rising, on the forum, flew down from Atlanta to run with me and my buddy. Day of the race we woke up had a light breakfast and headed out to the race

Myself and Galaxy_Rising before the race.

Once there we headed down to the start line area and started to warm up. Eventually Galaxy_Rising went to the front section of the race area for those folks who planned on running a sup 30 min race.

I am stretching out my calves on the barrier. Also a ton of folks behind me. Lots of folks where there about 11,000 ran in it.

The morning was already getting uber hot and mega humid. It was about 85f and in the 90’s% of humidity, by far the worst weather i had ever run in. I have been training in the 40s to mid 70’s with relatively low humidity. But i would endure. The race finally started and 7 minutes later i was crossing the start line (like i said, lots of folks at the race). I started off at a decent pace but still had to back off and walk a bit of the first mile. The heat and humidity were we more than i was expecting and there were not quite enough water stations. I did have to stop and walk for short segments semi-often during the race. But i made sure to always walk and then say when i make it to that tree (normally about 50 - 100 feet away) i will run again. In doing this I managed to cross the finish line in 47min 5sec. A new personal best and way way way below my goal time.

Me just at the finish line which I managed to cross at a run!

Finally found my two running mates Galaxy_Rising who finished in 26:50 minutes and my buddy Matt who finished in 36:50.

Slightly exaggerated level of exhaustion but fun none the less.

It felt great to accomplish the race. I am already signed up for another one at the end of March and am going to try and shave 3 minutes off my time. Or at least jog the entire race (which should help me accomplish my previous goal). I have a new pair of shoes that are much better than my previous pair which should help out a ton. Also i will be doing it in Tallahassee so it should be a bit cooler and less humid.

But all this training has helped me in so may ways. I have lost about 15 to 25 lbs (i really need to get a consistent scale) but i can tell from looking in the mirror that i have lost a fair amount and people are also commenting on it. It feels great.

Mr. Lister, Congrats on your first 5k! Awesome!

This is off the current topic but what MP3 player do you all use? Does anyone use that Nike thing with the iPod? Likes? Dislikes? I have a zune HD16, which I doubt means anything to anyone. I am having issues with it. I kind of drool over the iPod running apps, because zune has no apps that are for running, except or a stop watch. There is a couch to 5k app for ipod? More drooling. I find it hard to work out with out my tunes and my zune is being unreliable, plus I have to hold it because I have ound no arm band thingy for it.

yea i use a 3rd gen 8gig iPod touch. I do use the Nike+ even though i dont have the official shoe. I bought a shoe pocket thingy that i put it in and secure it with a bit of tissue paper that keeps it in place. It took 3 or 4 runs to properly calibrate but i really love it now. Its great for keeping track of your runs and helps you set goals. You can also join mini challenges i am involved in 2 at the moment,. one is run 11 miles a week in 2011 (have yet to reach this one) and the other is run 211 miles in 2011. Also its cool that when you come in from a run and plug in the iPod it automatically sends the info to the website and builds a graph of how your run went when was your fastest point and slowest point. My only problem i have really had was it didn’t send in one of my runs.

The C25K ap is great. It starts you off nice and easy and tells you when to run and walk. My only real problem is that when i build a play list for my run it tends to shuffle it instead of playing in the order i want it to. However i mostly listen to podcasts when i run so its really a moot point

Congrats on the 5K :)…Marathon next

dang congrats Mr Lister! and welcome aboard!

I’m considering doing a public race, whats it like? Do people tend to start spreading out as the race moves on? Is it difficult to set the pace you want with all those people around you?

yea for me it wasnt to hard to keep pace but i was in the middle of the pack. Some of the the folks up front had a bit of a problem starting to build their pace but after about 1/4 mile it loosed up and then you can weave in and out when you have to.

Congrats to you!!

Also, this is off topic but totally true, Publix is the thing I miss second-most about Florida. They just don’t make grocery stores like that in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Hey now! My parents have a condo in Clearwater, I’ve been to a few Gasparillas, but never did the race. That whole area is awesome. congrats on the race too.
