"Fitness Club" Thread

Having a hell of a time with diet control lately. I’m eating the right number of calories, but I’m screwing up and letting myself go negative during the day then having to eat in the evening to make it up. It’s causing me to put on fat and it’s really a downer.

Tried picking up a mixer bottle to carry with some meal replacement in it as a backup to avoid situations like yesterday where I ended up out on campus all day without enough food with me.

Seriously, though, there’s nothing like beating the crap out if yourself at the gym and suffering through all the pain just to screw it up with diet. Doh.

I know the feeling, my weekends lately have been BAD when it comes to my diet

I do awesome during the week and awful on the weekend

kind of like taking two steps forward one step backward every week

For reals! One thing that is tough for me is that I hate talking about my “weird” food needs and choices with my friends, especially when we’re doing fun stuff together on the weekends. I just hate the conversation that ends up happening every time:
“You don’t need to be on a diet! Plus it’s the weekend!”
“I’m not on a diet, I’m doing my best to eat right and be healthy.”
“Well, can we still go to The Diner? You could get a salad.”

Meh.

Oh well, even if we get a little off track on the weekends, two steps forward and one step back is still progress.

you see thats EXACTLY how I got suckered into eating Pizza last weekend!

“come on we’re going to go to Tony’s!” (awesome local italian place here)

“oh I really shouldn’t”

“you cant be like this all the time, besides you can always get a salad or something”

“fine I guess”

and then when we get there

“so guys should we all just get a pizza?”

“sure”
“sure”
everyone looks at me

“…okay”

I know I gave into peer pressure but do I really want to be that one person at the table eating a caesar salad when everyone else is digging into a pizza?

Tell me about it. The real kicker is that I went through a period where I had a meal plan and I stuck to it, I was eating really healthy and for the most part I enjoyed the food. But I didn’t exercise.

Now I’m exercising but I’m still not quite there with food. It’s like I can’t do both at the same time. Yet. That’s going to change soon.

Spinning class is finished and i shall reward myself with a single slice of pizza and 2 breadsticks… and some grape juice (light grape, 1/2 the calories)

Its not as healthy as salad, but its hard to do that when one doesnt eat veggies :stuck_out_tongue:

Keep up the good work all, the inspiration i get from this thread is more helpfull than you can imagine (normally id have 4 pieces of pizza and 3 breadsticks… and a beer)
you all rock…

Especially Bkitty and DRR! (go wolverines)

I know its not as nutrient rich, but for cal’s and protein nothing i know beats home made beef jerky. omnomnomnom

yeah, guys. Know what you mean on the setbacks- lol!

Had a run of icky health lately, and have not been religiously logging my food- amazing how much that helps. Also, a drastic schedule change has deprived me of my morning TEA! don’t even want to think about it

The most important thing I’ve done for myself is getting back on the horse. I don’t let myself wallow in self-loathing too long, cause stuff happens. I’m fortunate that my friends understand what I’m trying to do and they support me by not judging me. And I don’t judge them.

I’m not out to change others, I’m out to change some things for myself. Sure, I want my friends and family along for the ride, but I also know it’s about my attitude and what I want for myself. Once I got the hold-outs to understand this they let up on me. I think it was their own sense of guilt or feeling they might be judged that made them feel they needed to sabotage me. That’s my take, anyway.

Starbuccaneer and DRR- the best tactic I had was not to argue or let them make an issue of it. Shrug and smile and make your own decision about whether to join them and then let yourself live with it. Everyone dropping by here has a pretty good idea of what they want for themselves. So let’s frakking get some! IYKWIM

there. I’ve posted it. Now I can come back and take my own dang medicine! lol!

Props to Mr. Lister on the 5k!! Ossim man is ossim!

and thanks to all of you!

Ugh! Weekends are the worst! Especially the last few, since our weather has been so erratic. Being cooped up in a one bedroom apartment all day while snowpocalypse rages outside does not set one up emotionally for healthy choices.

But, as of tonight, I finally hit 15 lbs lost! Yay!

Yes! Mr. Lister, Sir described it, but the 5K race was a lot of fun! I had no idea what to expect and I’d never ran in a real race, but it was a great feeling of accomplishment to finish. Not to be all gushy, but I’m really proud of my brother Mr. Lister and he’s really the only reason I went down to run in my first ever 5K

It was a bit difficult to set your own pace at the beginning of the race (I actually didn’t even cross the start line until 90 seconds into the actual race) but it does start to thin out as everyone hits their stride and keeps moving along. The difference in running in a real race like this for me was seeing my times as I ran the course and setting in my mind that I just wanted to get in front of one more person at a time if I could keep up. Race day adrenaline will seriously keep you going!

I’m hoping to do the Warrior Dash in May in Atlanta. It’s about 3 miles (which is pretty much a 5K, but there are obstacles and different difficulties you have to climb over, walk through, crawl beneath… but, you get a Viking Helmet just for signing up, and you can call yourself a warrior!! So it’s pretty tempting. Anyone ever done one? I think it would also motivate me to keep up going to the gym for strength classes more than just running on my own since the whole ‘use-your-arm-strength’ thing is a bit tougher for me, and you have to climb rope latters, etc.

15 lbs. WOO!!

Hey Gang,

Sorry for a bit of an absence. Been swamped at work, dealing with some of Mrs. Amberite’s family stuff, and getting over a cold to boot :frowning: Back in the gym as of this Wednesday though, and back to kicking ass!!!

Apollymy (and heck, DDR and everyone it seems) I have the exact same problem with weekends. I thrive off of routine, so I get sucked into being more “flexible” with what I eat on the weekends. And by flexible, I mean bad. Goes to show that none of us are alone in dealing with this aspect of getting fit.

Chuck, I totally understand the daytime issue. I’m an office guy, so I can normally make it over to the lunchroom and break into my stash of greek yogurt or FF cottage cheese, but lately with work being insane, I’ve skipped some afternoon snacks. Today I brought a couple of servings of whey, as I can usually make it to a tap to grab water. 4:30pm and not feeling hungry, so I’m thinking its working - probably similar to your meal replacement strategy!

Workouts are #tigerblood #winning  My new leg day routines on Thursdays are amazing. The only problem is for the last two weeks Friday morning my legs are crazy stiff, so I’ve made excuses for not doing bkitteh’s ten minute burpee challenge. I think next week it will be “burpee wednesday”. Hoping that will work.

Good luck this weekend folks. I’m going to report back on Monday on how eating right went this weekend. I’m making a public commitment that it won’t suck. There, I’ve said it, no backing out now. I’ll probably tweet about successes or setbacks :eyebrow:

Good work everyone, and Apollymy, you’re kicking butt!! - gratz on the 15!

Woo congratz Apollymy!!!

this thread has really taken off! and I’m loving it, I can’t seem to get anybody I know irl to hop on the fitness/health bandwagon so this is really my only refuge for others on the same goal, I really think I would have fallen off by now if I didn’t have this thread to come to for some support!

so my transition week from phase 1 to phase 2 of P90X has been great! I didn’t run at all this week and it feels so odd that my left knee/side of my thigh isn’t sore from my long runs, did Yoga 3 times this week which I’m really starting to enjoy it and I can tell those ‘in between’ muscles really are getting worked that even just walking around I can do almost everything (especially job wise where I do a lot of physical work) is just…easier for lack of a better term. So once again I highly reccommend giving Yoga a shot if you’re thinking about it

so on a scale of 1 (i like walking in this park) to 10 (i wish i was never born so this pain would never be visited upon me), how bad is P90X?

I have heard from a friend that its somewhere around 15.

it all depends on what kind of shape you’re in going in, if you’re not use to doing a lot of the same kind of exercises you’re going to be burned

I did it 2 years ago (but ended up stopping after phase 2 when I started working 60+ hours a week for 4 months straight and was too wiped to continue doing it) and for the first couple weeks I just hurt EVERYWHERE, in fact I distinctly remember after one of the workouts being so wiped from it I couldn’t lift my arms above my shoulders that night

however this time since I had been doing some of the same type of workouts just not as intense, transitioning into it more intense I was still somewhat sore but no where near as bad

so on a simple scale

1st time I did it: about a 7 or 8

2nd time (or right now): around a 3 to 4

P90X IS intense, I’ve heard a few radio advertisements lately where they say “P90X if you can do a pushup you can do it, its that easy” …uh no not really

if you’re looking to challenge yourself and push yourself hard P90X is for you

just keep in mind most of the weight programs are about 50 to 55 minutes long and they also schedule you to do the ab work outs the same days as the weight routines, with the ab workout being 15 minutes long (I wouldn’t suggest doing them back to back, I usually do one in the morning before work and the other at night after work)

I haven’t done the Plyometrics cardio or the Kenpo X this time (the cardio workouts) because I’ve been doing my treadmill runs instead but if memory serves me correctly they’re about the same length

the Yoga is just over an hour and a half though which makes it the longest workout there is in it

don’t get me wrong though P90X DOES work, hell I’m only starting phase 2 on Monday and my arms are starting to tone up decently

another thing to consider is P90X is a 90 day commitment 6 days a week, so if you have a hectic schedule think if you’re going to be able to have enough time to do it

now that I’ve talked your arm off do you have any other questions about it?

My wife and I just started P90X. A little too intense on the first two workouts. Had to take a rest day but will be hitting it tomorrow. Wish me luck that I don’t die.

Dammit, I’m just going to have to increase my weekly cardio if I’m going to get rid of this Cromdamn fat. I’m currently doing four days a week of strength with one day pure cardio, but with 6 min of cycle intervals as a warm up and 16 min of elliptical intervals as a finish.

This next week I’m going to attempt to find time to add a second hour of cardio on the four strength days. Wish me luck.

So, I’ve been fairly bad lately, maybe it’s because I’m now just 20 pounds away from my goal. I was also getting tired of the WW tracking tool yelling at me for losing too fast. So I’ve been playing around with my daily calorie count trying to find the right balance.

I haven’t been doing much exercise since I started this whole thing last year. But, I have started this past week doing the workouts they have posted on Spark People. SO far I haven’t been sticking with it like I would like to. But I have done 3 different workouts this week. With a bout of vacuuming as well. Not where I’d like to be but it’s a start.

[b]Chuck[/] Start carrying some meal replacements with you. They’re not ideal but at least you have something with you, which makes it less likely to make bad choices. I don’t know about you, but when my stomach is screaming at me I jsut eat whatever I find.

Apollymy WOO HOO! 15 pounds! As for weekends, I try to save up my extra weekly points for the weekends. It’s my reward to myself for sticking with it the rest of the time. I can’t keep my nose to the grindstone all the time, I need a break. This is my break. But, I try to make better choices for those breaks.

Peer pressure is hard, but I’m woth BKitty on this one. This is my journey not my friends. They know what I am trying to do & for the most part they respect it. If they want to go somewhere that I feel I don’t have enough choices, I try to make suggestions with more choices. Sometimes I flat out tell them I can’t eat there. If they can’t or won’t understand, essentially they are sabatouers. shrug

So great to see so many supporting each other.

Edit Just wanted to add, as far as friends & peer pressure goes, you have to give yourself permission to be selfish in this. Don’t argue with them, but this is your journey, not theirs. You are the one who has to live with the consequences, not them. Most will understand, the ones who don’t? Well I guess they really aren’t that great a friend are they? Also, the occassional pizza will not be that bad in the long run. Live your life, just be conscious of what you choose.

Lately I’ve discovered a new challenge in the “eating right” department:

BENEVOLENT EMPLOYERS!!

I have a morning meeting most weekdays with co workers, led by a manager. The awesome thing is that the company usually springs for some kind of food: breakfast burritos, big boxes of fresh donuts, etc! It’s also gettng hard to refuse.

I’m staying strong and focused. Friday morning I sat at a table with about 8 others. All had some scrumptious looking donut in front of them.

I had my usual morning meeting can of V8. Mmmmmm.

On the plus side, alot of the folks are bringing in some real healthy lunches, salads etc, like me so there’s lots of props and reinforcement being handed out then.

Which is good, because the place ships in 20 large pizzas for the employees once in awhile too! ARRRG!

Great posts Mr Lister Sir and galaxy_rising! You two looked to be in great form. You’ll need that endurance once the Zombie Apocalypse begins… in Georgia, as we now know it will.

Rach, great job on the 15! Way to go Ginger!

Nike! Congrats on starting up the exercise again. You’ll be outrunning the woofs in no time. (btw I am NOT one :p)

Aset, Darth_Reven_Rules, Baconface, Xero 1 The Board Lurker, Starbuccaneer, BishopMontanha, TGPAL, Memyself, Amberite, EagleCat, bkitty(WOLVERINES!!), Audra and Chuck…thanks to you all for getting, and keeping, me motivated every time I read this thread.

Ya’ll rock!

Just got back from canoeing 6.5-7 miles over two days with my Boy Scout troop and feel like my arms are about to fall off. Before yesterday, I hadn’t been on a canoe for like a decade and don’t think I was ever in the back seat of one.

Plus, the route we went on had a rediculous number of trees and sandbars. I think I managed to hit every one, even the ones that should have been mutually exclusive.
