Cool craaaaaap you've acquired/done lately

Woot!!

baltar

I know! squee!

Also, I’ve started working with the amazing alpaca yarn my sister got me for my birthday. lurve

Got my knife for my BSG marine costume. Just need to remove the blade to make it con friendly.

Oh, and those 100 calorie Twinkie packs rock!

Mmmmm Twinkies. I didn’t even notice the knife. Weird, huh?

Not really - I did the same thing.

I went and bought a Mortar and Pestle today. I spent hours grinding random spices just to smell them. I Cant wait to grind all my own spices and herbs. JOY!!!

I don’t know why, but that just seems so cute coming from you (and I mean this as a high compliment). You don’t strike me as a mortar and pestle kind of guy.

Me: I had a great (if tiring) day in Baltimore today. We took the kids to the aquarium and went out to lunch (nothing fancy, just Subway). It was the perfect follow up to a nice concert last night after which I got a quick drink with a friend then came home to catch BSG on the DVR (my mind is still blown). Tomorrow I’m taking the day off. Then I have Monday off and no planning to do as it’s audition week and all I have to do is go in and help grade entrance exams. (More on that in the life is teh suck thread as the week progresses, I’m sure.)

Congratulations! I have made some delicious concoctions in mine. I highly recommend freshly ground green cardamom.

Thats the third thing i ground…after Coriander and Black Pepper. It waqs followed by Cinnamon. It made my house smell great!

Im gonna use my new toy and my freshly made Ghee to make some Chicken Korma tomorrow!!

Green cardamon? How is that different from regular cardamon? I love the scent of cardamon, by the way. It’s the best.

I am jealous! I have a mortar and pestle but nothing fancy to grind up right now. That sounds like fun.

May I applaud you on some fine choices there

'Tis lovely isn’t it. There is green cardamom and brown cadamom. They are actually from completely different genera of plants, but both in the same family. The brown species is much stronger and better used in very robust and strongly flavoured curries and other such dishes. I use green cardamom lightly toasted and freshly ground in some salads such as the carrot one I invented at Christmas time.

I passed my 3000 post.

Got a BSG watch from my wife for V’s-Day!

Sorry, no twinkies this time.

BTW, there are 13 pairs of holes for the buckle on the band…a little foreshadowing perhaps?

Since the Mrs. was working most of the weekend I went to ground – as I often do when left to my own devices. During my “me” time I decided to do a bit of fine scale modeling. My dad gave me a few models for my birthday (not just randomly, I love making them.) and I built one this weekend.

For those of you who don’t know, I love tanks. Actually that’s not really accurate – I nurture a rather unhealthy obsession with them. In short, I’m a tank nut. So of course the modeling I choose to do is almost always a tank.

The obsession really does cover all tanks but I have a special fondness for the WWII era armor and was uber-stoked to put this 1/35 scale Panther together.

Before any WWII buffs start pointing out that there were no African-Core German tanks that wore this color scheme (normally sporting mustard and green or grey) I must warn you I’m not a rivet counter. Historic accuracy isn’t really my bag. I’m just into the tanks themselves.

In this case my Panther was used as a test bed to learn how to dry brush, having never attempted it before. I went a bit overboard but I have a King Tiger coming up and I wanted to find out how far I could push things and still have them come out right. The flash and light in the pics is kinda crappy too cuz it’s actually not this shiny – which I find annoying. I suppose I could fix it post but that’s not really the point of the exercise.

Anyway, I’ll quit blabbing. Had to show somebody and you guys are about the only other geek homies I have who would care about such things.

Rock on!

Wow! Those are beautiful Sean.
I wish I had talent like that.

Sean, the tank, and paint, look awesome. I was totally into tank models as a kid/teen, and built many. They’ve all been blown up with firecrackers, probably before you were born! I remember a Sherman I did, with the stacked rocket tube attachment on the top, it was probably the best job I ever did on realistic painting. Do you do dioramas for them as well? That can be a ball, and going around finding the scale stuff you need is a whole nother animal, and fun as hell too.
Have you ever tried making a bit of battle damage? Melting in dents, tearing/bending a fender? That can add a bit of realism too.

Good luck on the King Tiger!!! What a machine that was in real life!

Sean, that tank is awesome. When I think of tanks I mostly just think about Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but seriously, that thing looks amazing.

Sean, I don’t know you also like stories involving tanks. But if so, Last Citadel is great book that has a lot of WW II Russion front Tank Battle stuff in it.

Tigers, Panthers go toe to toe with Russian T-34s. You’d love it.

I read it in audio book form, and I really enjoyed it. The Battle of Kursk is probably among the most exciting tank battle that history has seen.

Sean, that’s absolutely gorgeous. I’m envious. Modeling is something I always wanted to get into but never had the talent for. Post more pictures of your babies, please!
