Cool craaaaaap you've acquired/done lately

Is this not great.

Hey, that’s a pretty long commitment from me. I usually do short and easy projects!!

Justice For Stroogie

I’m at work this morning, flipping bagels (started at 5:30am), and my phone rings. I can’t check it while I’m on the job, but I peek a look at it. The number is 314-444-5555. Seriously. What kind of screwball phone number is that?

If I get a call from a number I don’t recognize, it’s either really bad news–a bill collector, although I recognize most of them by now, and this one didn’t look familiar–or really good news–a job lead calling me after receiving my email inquiry, perhaps. So I excuse myself to the bathroom, 'cause I can’t stand the suspense. After washing my hands, I listen to the voicemail.

It’s a Detective Abel from the St. Louis City Police, calling to tell me he thinks he has my stereo. AND the punks who stole it. I called him back right away. I couldn’t remember the model of my stereo (it came with the car when I bought it from my sister, who got the stereo from her friend), but he just said, “I’m sure this is yours. Just come on down and identify it, and I’ll give it back to you.”

The next few hours of work could not go by fast enough. I called my friend Ashley–whose car had also been broken into by the same punks outside my house that night–and she said she was already on her way to pick up her own radio. Good news all around.

After clocking out of work, I went straight to the police station (the bagel shop is frequented by cops, so I thought I’d pick up extra points for arriving in uniform). I waited in the lobby for a few minutes, waiting for someone to bother checking the front desk, and finally just called Det. Abel directly. He took me down to his office and held up the stereo for me to identify. There she was, all safe and sound and waiting for me to take her back.

I asked him how they found it. Apparently, there’s been a rash of these incidents–18 in the past week, I believe–and when they caught two guys in a stolen car with a bunch of loot in the back, well surprise, surprise, the rash stopped (like Blue*Star on HotDog). The guys have a history before this, too, and tomorrow or Wednesday I get to go down to the courthouse to press charges.

I feel so secure all of a sudden. The system worked! I have my stereo back, and although I’ll have to scrape together the money to get the damage to my car fixed, the rat-bastards who (allegedly) did it are tucked away in a cell somewhere, with the noble Detective Abel determined to put them away. Something suddenly seems right with the world. Cool side note: I once played a “Detective Abel” in a high school play. Kismet, perhaps?

With high spirits, I rode my good luck and set out to apply for more jobs this afternoon. No hits yet, but the ball is rolling. I’ve even discussed the possibility with a friend of returning to my church for another internship. It’s not big money, but I was just warming up when the last one ended, and I was happy and useful there. Why frak with that?

Thanks to everyone who sympathized with/encouraged me this weekend. I love you all.

And…I was trying to work up the energy to do something about dinner, and I just remembered I have leftover baked fish and garlic cashew broccoli in the fridge. Yes, a damn fine day.

That is AWESOME, Glim !! Better yet it never happened, but still, rare to get your stuff back like that!!
Somebody up there must like you.

Long ago my apartment was broken into. The police coming to the alarm recognized the guys who stole from us. They had to check that we were OK before going after the bad guys. We were not home and the police picked the guys up that week. It is not a good sign when the police recognize you by sight.

I know how strange it feels and glad you are feeling safer Glimfeather.

A used bookstore here in California. I’m afraid it might be the wrong coast.

The funny thing is, I had just stated to my wife that I was going to go with the Hubble calender unless they had a BSG one (which I thought was a snowball’s chance in hell), at which point she bent down to look through an unmarked box of random calenders and the next think I know shes handing me the 2009 BSG calender…

Yay!

baltar!

That rocks, Stroogie. Way to go! I’m so glad to hear that there is still justice in the world. (See? I told you things would start looking up. Little by little…)

Whoo Hoo! I’m happy for you, Glimfeather.

Congrats GlimF. You almost never hear happy ending stories like that.

I was just now remembering when I was in my mid-20s (I think) an incident I had where my car was broken into.

On my way home from work I stopped at a drugstore in Lawrence, Massachusetts to buy a birthday card or something. When I came back out to my car, my car window had been smashed. Lawrence is a fairly high crime area, so this was not totally unexpected.
The theives had totally ignored a portable CD player that was in the car, and had instead stolen a black bag. I can understand why—it probably looked like a laptop computer bag.
But there wasn’t a computer in the bag. It was a bag filled with Dungeons and Dragons stuff. Player’s Handbook, Monster Manuel, etc. etc. lots of dice, a variety of painted metal figures. and of course sheets of character information on the many D&D characters I had had since I first started playing D&D (when I maybe 19).

To this day, my friends and I joke that, maybe that night, a bunch of thugs from the backstreets of Lawrence had a life changing experience. Something like:

Theif #1: Hey man, let’s go out and do somemore crimes tonight. I’m feeling loco. We need to steal some more car stereos so we can buy guns and drugs.

Theif #2: Hey no man, I’ve got a better idea. Remember that black bag we stole last night from that geek’s car? It was filled with all this cool Dungeons and Dragrons stuff. Dude, we should get the gang together and play. I’ll be the Dungeon Master man. Here’s a character sheet, I’ll tell you how to roll up a character.

Theif #3: Sweet. Let’s do it. But I’m not rolling up a new character. I’m gonna use this Thotfulguy’s 10th Level Elf Magic User named “Snowleaf”. This dude’s got a Wand of Cold and Staff of Power. I’m gonna kick some orc ass (sorryBarb)!

Could’ve happened.

Just found out that Space (Canadian version of Sci/fi ) is doing a full on BSG marathon today. Leading to the new episode. There mixing in some BSG fan things, webisodes and everything. Not sure about sci-fi, but am I glad I booked today off work.

So I go to read this thread and what comes on the radio? The theme from Space Camp!

Today is awesome.

Hopefully, by next week, my new HP Mini will be here. I ordered it last weekend after drooling over it for the past month. The 1 year “oops, it’s broke” warranty was a free upgrade for the model I bought! Of course, I went with the cool “designer” version - it was only $75 more than the customized one I wanted so I threw caution (and $75) to the wind and got the cool red Vivienne Tam edition. I mean, it’s the “Tam” model - I had to have it.

The hub said that I could spend my Xmas stash on whatever I wanted so I told him I was getting it and that he better spend his stash on something fun and not house-stuff. We’ll see what he gets. And it better be a waste of money like my purchase was! :D:rolleyes:

Glim, two words:

BOOH + YAH.

Splatt, the XO is looking into a Mini for college. I’d be very interested in hearing how you like/dislike it when you get it! And so would she, most likely.

i just recieved my asus 1000ha… and i have to say after looking @ many lil net books inclunding the acer and the hp among others… i have NO complaints about my asus… for round $400 i got 1.6ghz intel atom 2gb ram and winows xp home with a 160gb hdd… and i gota say i love it… i wold and will recommend it to anyone… it also has the 10.2inch screen… if any1 wants any extra info let me kno…

My friend got one to use when she goes to court and such - that’s when the drooling started. See, my IT work there gets swapped for free legal advice occasionally. And if I work on Saturday to set computers up for her, she buys me pizza and Diet Coke. I’m usually not one for a “mini” but the HP one was very comfortable to type with and the touch pad/mouse jobby was pretty decent. I’ll let you know more once mine gets here and I start using it for traveling to meetings and such. I would really love to use it at work but that would just get me in trouble (we’re not allowed to use non-contract PC’s at work - you don’t want to know why). I would recommend upgrading to the 60gig hard drive ($30 extra) if it’s going to be her main PC and you will need a USB cdrom drive for loading software/re-loading the OS (God forbid!). I got my cd from an alternate source as the HP Accessories store hasn’t had any for a while. My extended warranty arrived today - like I give a rip about that paperwork! GIVE ME MY MINI!!!

I had also looked at the Dell Mini but the HP one was slightly less expensive and had a 10" screen. The Dell only had an 8" and a 12" screen option if I’m remembering correctly. Dell is good but so is HP and since we’re now buying HP’s at work, I figured I may as well have one of their devices!

approx what did u pay for ur hp??? and what the advertised batt. life??

Is it extremely similar to the dances of shame and honor?

Indeed it is!
