#241: Dragonheart, Listener Calls, 2011 Meetup

Don’t be forgetting his role in the Stargate original movie…

In addition to those great films already mentioned, don’t forget Kurt Russell’s Roles in:

Poseidon
Sky High
Miracle (a personal favorite)
Vanilla Sky
3000 Miles to Graceland
Executive Decision
Tombstone
Backdraft
Tango & Cash (One of Mrs S’s favorite movies, although I have no idea why)
Overboard
Big Trouble In Little China (an all time personal favorite - I even know the truck CB lines by heart)
Used Cars

I’ll second John Carpenter’s kinda campy, but still kick-(sorry Barb) Big Trouble in Little China!

It was like a more easygoing Snake Pliskin and sidekick went up against General Zod and Co. or The Legion of Doom …in Chinatown. I thought it contained the best super-villains on film up to that point.

Ya’Know you could roll this up as a John Carpenter with Kurt Russel Arc.

Elvis
Escape From NY
The Thing
Big Trouble In Little China
Escape From LA

Did anyone else hear a similar melody in the Dragonheart theme on the shire theme from LOTRs?

Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk

The theme or pieces of the theme from Dragonheart sounded familiar. I said so during the frak. But, I wouldn’t place it with LOTR…

I’d like to say pretty, pretty, pretty please to that (or maybe a live show?) as well! If it’s do-able, it will be seriously awesome if there’s some way for those of us unable/unlikely to join in the fun to well, join in the fun.

I like Kurt Russell, but I’m not sure I could stomach through a five episode Kurt Russell arc. I say YES to a more mini Kurt Russell arc (say, maybe just 2?)
Though I do miss a ongoing tv show arc like Stargate or Firefly too. It could be a shorter series too, something like Jekyll?

I’m enjoying the 'cast, and I don’t usually nitpick, but:

mankind? that really grates on me. I’d rather we speak of humanity, since, as not a man, I don’t really feel included in “mankind.”

Or, as the inestimable Carl Sagan said in an interview from 1994 (I tried to jot down exactly what he said) that was recently replayed on NPR’s Talk of the Nation Science Friday, “I hate to say “manned”, there are women astronauts.”

Now, time to finish listening to the 'cast

I don’t get that argument, myself.

MAN
woMAN
huMANity
MANkind

it all has the word man in it. I assume it has to do with judeo-christian belief of man coming first, but at the end of the day i know i don’t give it much that.

could be because i’m a man, though. i know that you don’t often think something is wrong until your perspective is changed, like when i worked third shift for about two years.

Tying the arc together with odd bits that jump out.

Last week I clearly heard “slongsword”, this week “Zardoz”…

Mere coincidence? Nay. Only the Sean Connery has the acting chops to play a dragon, a post-apocalyptic barbarian, and perhaps even wield a shlongsword and not look ridiculous.

Is it leaf blowing day Mr. Connery? If you like bad, cheesy sci-fi - this extra sharp cheddar - I get sucked in every time it’s on.

Um. I am not sure I agree with the not look ridiculous part… :frowning:

“Man” originally meant “human.” “Woman” is literally “female human”. “Mankind” is pretty much “Humanity.”

On Fable III, the cast expressed some concern about not being able to play female characters. I’ve never played any of the Fable games, but I’ve preordered III now due to recommendations and urgings from friends. And I peeked a bit at the achievements, because apparently I care about stuff like that, and judging from the shortdescs of those I’d say that you can play a female character, one way or another.

Dunno why they insist on only talking about a male player character in the trailer tho. Maybe it’s difficult to do a lot of “he… or SHE!” in a 2 minute snippet?

This was also brought up for the ME series. In canon, (novels, promotional material, and crap) the protagonist is male even though you can play as female. Blame marketing?

I can’t wait for March. Already emailed my boss for the days off

I’m already getting ready, too. I’m so excited it’s ridiculous.

I rewatched Dragonheart hoping that I’d like it more the second time around, but unfortunately it didn’t work. As the credits rolled I thought, “Nope. Still hate it.”

The acting left me pretty unmoved. I spent most of the movie thinking, “Dennis Quaid is a good actor . . . right?” But David Thewlis was a great villain, a truly despicable character. And I did like Draco, he had some great character moments, but the movie just didn’t work for me.

Hi all,
Enjoying the podcasts, the Dragon arc takes me back to my earlier days of reading, Fantasy and Sci Fi, Now I have switched just to Sci Fi for some reason. Anyhoo, just wanted to bring up a link that popped into mind when Sean said the word “Spinx-ter” Weebl (of badgers, badgers, badgers fame) did a funny flash about something similar, It’s flash so I would say it is Safe For Work. Here is the link…

Keep up the great work, I look forward to more great podcasts.

They had that game at the Bally’s at the mall my friend and I used to walk to on weekends to catch dollar movies and play video games. It was called “Cliffjumper.” I even vaguely remember the teaser bit that ran when someone wasn’t playing, “Will the princess be forced to marry someone she can’t stand? Will Cliff be caught in a trap door for the rest of his life?” I remember that it started off with a car chase and someone tossed a german grenade at you at one point. I never got very far.

I played both Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace. Space Ace is the only one of all of those that I beat, thanks to a church “Lock-In” at Malibu where I played it all night. Good times.

On a side note, Repo Men (plural) is not a remake, nor does it have anything to do with the movie Repo Man (singular) from the 80’s.

i’m coomming
*waits for sniggering to die down)
I am doing my damndest to attend the meet up, i’m alos trying to fit in some visits to friends scattered aroudn various states (thanks to the cheapness of southwest).
The reas n for other visits is the timing of the meetup, trying to fly out of ireland taht clos to st patricks day would cost me a bloody fortune, however if i fly the week before it should only be a damp and slightly bloodstained fortune.

on the “while recording gtecast tonight, mike said we cannot record now without mentioning gwc, my fault, i’m filling in for audra in the single entendre role” ID

Dude I think? Maybe you’d be the first over seas Natl meet up attendee. That’d be aaaaaawesome

It would be awesome to fly out of the Uk to attend the meetup with son and wife, but hey alas it’s not to be :frowning:
