Wolverine movie review (spoilers)

Iwilll tell you what’s right and what’s wrong.

Ok bigest problems with the movie.

The total recasting and recharactering of Sabertooth. They had commited to Sabertooth as the big catlike wrestler guy from the x-men movie. They changed actors and gave him a different characterization. Now he’s the small agile guy from a few other comics.

They used a different guy as Styker and gave him a different personality from that of the x-men movie. So that blows that connection to the films… and the new guy blows. He isn’t really good at all. Seriously not Bryan Cox.

They made emma frost ( the white queen) a character who’s power is that she has skin of diamond ( like collosus only diamond instead of metal). She is a young teenager and not a telepath. So she isn’t a rich chick who owns a school or anything.

Deadpool has every mutant’s power that they had captured not just healing and fighting as is traditionaly deadpool. It’s kinda unreasonable that Wolverine ( and savertooth ) can beat him. He has super speed, healing, Cyclops’s eye rays, the teleportation power… it’s really stupid. PLUS ( and this might change in the final cut… cause I heard that after filming that they brought ryan reynolds back for some additional dialog.) he doesn’t talk!! Stryker has a line in the beggining of the movie that Deadpool would be the perfect soldier if he would quit talking… at the end of the movie he has been turned into the super mutant, with no mouth. It’s soooo stupid that it makes the whole ending stupid.

Wolverine doesn’t get his adamantium claws until 1979- stupid

Three mile Island was the fault of the wolverine/Stryker deadpool fight -dumb dumb dumb

PLUS it seemed that they were trying to just stuff mutants into the movie without them usually serving any real purpose.

Plus the entire plotline of this weapon X story is all about building 1 mutant with the power of all the others really takes away from the comic version of wolverine’s origin. It’s just a really boreing horrible plot. It seems like it was writen , not only in a weekend, but by guys that had NEVER read any of the comics

What was Right with the movie?

Picard’s cameo as Professor x was cool

The first 35-45 mins was great. it was not a blockbuster great movie… but really really well done and well acted.

Gambit was pretty cool

The opening credit’s montage was really really great.

Once again, trying to say that (it’s a workprint) is not an excuse. unless they edit out the whole plot for the final version, this sucks.

I disagree with every thing you listed as bad or dumb…

Frankly, I find the list dumb…

That’s not at all interesting.

What’s interesting is why you disagree with the list.

I agree with Pike. Cody, that’s very un-GWC of you. Feel free to disagree and debate…you should explore why you don’t agree with Roosterfunk.

Ok, I’ll list what I strongly disagreed with then.

One, This is an X-men movie and how many times have they changed the story in X-men? I don’t understand how the fans are ok with that but the moment someone does the same for a movie andtellsthere own story they get the hate…

I would say more but as Solai and Pike have said this is GWC…

No, no. It’s not un-GWC to list your disagreements. Go ahead. At length. Publically.

It’s just un-GWC to say, e.g. “That suxs.” Nobody is going to take offense at a reasoned disagreement (I hope.)

I’ll wait and see what people have to say about my last post then go from there…

I get pretty worked up when it comes to some things and X-Men’s one of them…

There’s a reason I stayed away from the fourms so much during the arc.
:o

Well, different fans have different takes, and even the same fans can have different takes. By way of analogy, I was strongly against the ‘reboot’ of Star Trek, but I’ve recently been encouraged by what I’ve seen. (And I had almost the exact opposite reaction to Enterprise.)

if cody watched the movie and likes all the things I disliked… that’s his bussiness. Only if you actally watched it. Not if you are defending just to be an apoligist. ( I am a life long x-men fan as well… that’s why I am so critical)

If this movie is in the movie universe I expect it to follow the movie continuity and BARELY change from the comics. If you think that every movie is an original story and should not be measured agaisnt the source material or other movies… my review is not for you or any other person who feels like you.

Most sc-fi fans enjoy prequals that have characters in common with the other movies in the series to slightly resemble themselves in at least one way other than name. That is a given for almost all sc-fi and movie fans.

most fans of comics like for their characters when adapted to movies to at least SLIGHTLY resemble the character in appearance , abilities, characterization and origin.

If you think that Creed in this movie resembles sabertooth in the other x-men movies- wow . Observant

If you think it’s great for emma frost to be a different character all together with non of the dame powers and being the wrong age is a good thing- great!

If you think deadpool is the character with 20 mutants powers combied is great- more power to you.

if you think only two wolverine/creed fights in the movie lasting a combined three mins is a blockibuster wolverine movie- good for you

If you think wolverine recovering from animal form 45 mins after busting out of the facility resembles the comic you loved as a kid in ANY way… good , that’s your perogative.

If you think Gambit would be 50 years old in the time of the x-men movies, good for you.

If you think it fits the origin of scott summers for him to have his ruby glasses and attend a public high school- then you really must be a big fan of x-men… cause that is jst like every version of his origin, not! It is counter to his entire character. Scott is a dweeb becasue he was ONLY ever around Mr sinister, then Prof X then the other x-men. It’s who he is. He never went to a high school. But, If you think that this movie followed the continuity of the character- good for you.

so there is my review backup…

if you disagree with this, id like for you guys to tell me where my logic is flawed.

I did see it and I don’t judge a movie that’s not even done but if you do have fun.

I’m going to leave it at that.

After being thoroughly let down by X-Men 3, I really dug the new Wolverine movie. As for being true to source material, I say change in any way that makes the story more enjoyable and/or believable. It’s a movie, and therefore MUST be different, by it’s very nature. But even with the place-holder effects, I really went with it. Some really impressive fight scenes and a cohesive story. Young Stryker seems pretty close to Old Stryker from X2. And while Liev Schreiber is decidedly not the wrestler guy who played Sabretooth in X-Men, I certainly think it’s possible that it’s the same character, they just experimented more on him and wiped his memory. Or maybe it’s just a different character period, kind of wish they’d at least given us a hint toward resolving this. But I deffinitely dug it enough to probably see the completed version in theaters (I didn’t pirate this, a friend from work cut me a copy and I couldn’t resist). Overall, thumbs up! And jeez-louise is Wolvie’s love interest hot or what?

I just got back from seeing the movie. I really liked it. I too disagree with much of what RoosterPunk says. While it does not follow the exact story line from the Comics i do think it follows the movie universe. This one does take place 1x years before the first X-men movie. Much cna change in that time. It is entirely possible that Stiker can change and become the character that he was in the 2nd movie. The same can be said for Sabertooth. There are many many stories that take place between the end of this movie and the beginning of the next one. I mean Prof X is walking in this one.

As for Deadpool. I gotta say that i really didn’t know much about his character (i am only a casual X-men fan and i only catch up with it sporadically) But i really like what they did with this version. I also loved the battle on 3-Mile Island.

I think they are also potentially setting up things for other Origin series. Maybe a Cyclops origin and i really really hope for a Gambit origin. I think they pretty much nailed his character. I would have liked to have seen a stronger cajun accent but that’s just petty squabbling on my part.

i do agree on one point that Roosterpunk makes and think they did add a little to many mutants in it. But to be fair it is an X-men movie and they have always done that.

I saw it on Saturday night, and I LOVED it. Even though my comic geek rage came out once or twice–most notably about a plot point featuring Emma Frost because I love her. But I’m usually very good at separating my love of the source from the movies. All I had been wanting from this movie was good looking guys, Emma Frost, Gambit’s actual movie debut, and explosions. And I got it! Plus I liked playing “ID the background mutant” (positive IDs: Quicksilver and Banshee. Possible IDs: Magma, maybe? The girl they were icing down, in any case.) I really liked the Wolverine/Sabertooth dynamic, I absolutely loved every time Gambit was on screen, and I really, really, really loved the opening bits of the movie.

Consider me one satisfied fangirl.

I am totally stunned to find out, after watching the movie, that Wolverine’s love interest is Lynn Collins - fair Portia (and very blond) from the Merchant of Venice (with Al Pacino as Shylock). I totally didn’t recognise her as a brunette; in fact she totally fooled me as a native-American/mix blooded lady.

PS Watching Al Pacino do the ‘Hath not a Jew eyes?’ speech in a New Yorker accent is worth the price of the DVD itself!

PPS Ryan Reylonds (aka ex-Mr Alanis Morrisette) is everywhere these days! I’ve been a fan since Two guys, a girl & a pizza place. I loved his smart-alec remarks in Blade Trinity. I loved his cool dad role in Definitely, Maybe. RR is the IT boy of 2008/2009 !

Did they fix the ending from the pirate version? Or was Deadpool still a guy that had his mouth taken away and he had all their powers and stuff? DID emma frost get her real power in this version or is she still “diamond girl”?

Yes Deadpool had his mouth taken away (but look for Deadpool ending on YouTube that followed the credits) and Emma was “diamond girl.” Just answering your questions…I never read the comics or watched much of the cartoons so this was as good as a stand alone movie for me. And I thought it was great.

Emma “Frost” is only hinted that she is Emma Frost…She is however only listed as Emma in the credits.

And if you stay after the credits in some theateres it strongly suggests that “Deadpool” in the movie is not the Ryan Reynolds Character.

She is Emma Frost on ALL their multi-character advertisements. They raped her!!!

yeah… she’s ema frost in the commercials and stuff. That was their big thing a month back was pushing “look all these mutants in our movie… it’ll really push the story along”
