Where is this movie prop from?

Hi Everyone,

Today while at my local video store (Movie Madness) I noticed a movie prop above their cash registers with a note asking where it was from. Its this turtle/monster head thats NOT from the Neverending Story, or Jurassic Park (according to their note).

I thought that I’d throw some pictures up on here in case one of you geniuses knew what movie/show it was from.

Let the speculation begin!

Great. That’s going to nag at me all week.

Did they say how long they’ve had it in the store? That might help narrow it down.

Looks ever so slightly like the tortoise from The Neverending Story, but…not…quite. But in the second film (which stunk), wasn’t there a revisitation of this character puppet, with a little reworking, which might explain the variance?

I didn’t ask, the whole store is this epic collection of movie memorabilia. I’ll try to get more details when I go to return my movies.

It looks like something that would have been used in movies like Baby, Secret of the Lost Legend or Land of the Lost. Don’t remember what they used in those I haven’t seen either in a LONG time. It appears to be from a movie that used stop motion or mechanical props. And the detailing makes me think it’s not too terribly old.

Found this site that might help us narrow the movie down:

http://www.dinosaur.org/CelluloidDinosaurs1960.htm

It tells what was used for the dinos…like humans in costumes, claymation, etc. Might jog someone’s memory anyways.

Land Before Time?

How big is it, roughly?

The Land Before Time (whole series of movies) was a cartoon. I used to babysit my nephew and we always watched those. Dinos were a favorite of his…along with He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, etc.

Those figures next to it are probably 12-14 inches tall, so it’s a little bigger than that.

(Pre-emptive STFU GR!)

You know…

…that could be from the Dark Crystal…

Is it a stand-in for the turtle dude in ‘Finding Nemo’?

my first thought was the movie baby…

I wondered that too, but I don’t think so. I doesn’t look right for either species that it could potentially be. (I love that movie!!!)

There’s another element to consider…seeing as how it’s relatively true-to-life, and not Henson-cartoonish (even with a tip of the cap to the Dark Crystal, et al.), I wonder if it may be something other than a major motion picture prop, rather something from one of the myriad of direct-to-video or other productions that the discount bins at Wally World and such are filled with.

Having little else to do last night before the MIB viewing (which I then missed the frak party because of a 7-year old who refused to go to sleep), I scoured film and video archives to find similar tortoise characters, and came up with bupkis.

So thanks, 'Cosmos, I’m now fixated on references to half of a painted latex turtle that I can’t wrap my OCD-meets-AD/HD brain around. Greeeeeeat.

Thanks for all of your thoughts, I knew that if any group of scholar-geeks could figure this out, it’s the GWCers.

I’ve spent the last few hours going through YouTube clips trying to figure this out, and I need to let my brain relax.

I agree the styling is wrong for Dark Crystal. I love that movie too!

The prop looks too well-crafted and detailed to have been made on a direct-to-DVD budget. I was thinking maybe The Flintstones movie? It certainly isn’t Dino, though, and the eyes are big and expressive enough it makes me think it would have to be a major character, or one of some significance.
