Maybe it’s just that it brings back… certain… memories for me. Eleven years old, living in the ‘deep north’ (far north Queensland), and actually being able to speak English sentences, with pretty much correct grammar and pronunciation. There was no other explanation: I had to be a poof. Only poofs spoke proper, and wore shoes and had clean clothes. Hence, I was ‘Poofy’. I’m not sure ‘Poshy’ was any better at the next school.
Could have been worse. They could have called you Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
