Twitter

OK, so how does Twitter actually work? I liked Solai’s previous description that it’s like Facebook status updates without all the other Facebook stuff, so I think I understand it in principal. But how does one follow a GWC related discussion? Currently, I’m following Chuck’s and Audra’s posts. Do I have to choose to follow everyone else who may post something related to GWC (i.e., all the others following Chuck and Audra) to see the discussion? Will that just open me up to follow any random Twit (in mean post and not person) that someone posts on any subject? Or is Twitter sorted by subject areas?

Thanks…

Currently, you follow a person and get all their public (non-directed) tweets. Since you follow both Chuck and Audra, you’ll also see tweets between the two of them (Chuck twittering @GWCAudra, for example.) If you don’t follow Solai, you won’t see tweets between him and them.

There’s a concept of tagging that’s been introduced by (IIRC) other services (like Hahlo) that use Twitter’s feed, and that may evolve into something like what you’re thinking of, but it’s not quite there yet. (a twitter tag looks like: #GWC)

So its best to just set my Twitter feed to follow all the GWC usual suspects then?

Edit: And as Chuck and Audra have set up their profiles as ChuckGWC and AudraGWC its up to the poster to make different profiles for different subjects they wish to twit on?

Yes, I forgot to mention that. Someone like Wil Wheaton will have a private ‘friends and family’ account, and a public one for teh masses.

Another tip is to see who the people you’re following are following, you’ll find some interesting folks that way

Here is the current list of GWC Tweeple and their ids. As usual, if I am missing anyone, let me know.

…and I’ve signed up as Phil1859, but have yet to tweet…

…and I renamed mine to spatterson65GWC in hopes that there will be some sort of “group” feature in the future.

I’m surprised you didn’t take the opportunity to rename yourself ‘splatterson’

See - that Monday-trying-to-sneak-in-non-work-surfing thing was fogging my mind. Maybe I’ll do that in the future!

For any of you interested- @stephen fry is on twitter.

List updated.

@spatterson65 - The way the group feature is going to be implemented is through the # functionality, so a message to the GWC group would be sent to #GWC (or whatever it gets named).

I can’t put GWC in my alias since I follow people from three different forums on Twitter and tanstaaflGWCGWJSDMB would just be confusing…

You know…that could be arranged here…

I’m still not really understanding this twitter thing. Where do you see this stuff? Is it like Google reader, in that instead of blogs I would see people’s “tweets”? I don’t have a data plan on my cell, mainly because I don’t have a keyboard on my phone so, I feel it’s rather pointless.

That’s pretty much it.

I don’t have a data plan on my cell, mainly because I don’t have a keyboard on my phone so, I feel it’s rather pointless.

It’s designed around the limitations of phone text messaging (SMS). You can also access it on your computer, but I’m not sure how appealing it would be without being able to at least read it on your phone. Anybody use it w/o the mobile component?

Basically it is a way with limited characters to share what you are doing or thinking. Some people use it as a communication or chat tool, but mostly it is a simple way of broadcasting something about you.

If you don’t have a phone with a keyboard it may be a little pointless to setup, but it doesn’t mean that you can’ use the service from your computer. Do what I did: Setup an account and take a test drive. If you don’t like it, nothing lost.

I probably use the phone to access it less than 10% of the time, simply because my work schedule’s reversed from alot of you guys and I’m home during the day. So most of my stuff is strictly laptop at home. Or laptop at work. And it’s still fun as hell that way!

I mostly use it at work, so it’s up and running on my PC most of the time. I do use it on my phone but that is a minor part of my use.

Think of Twitter as text messaging or IM on a party line.

To see what it looks like just click on the Twitter link in my sig below. Go to twitter.com to sign up yourself if you are interested.

I did until very recently. I simply can’t be receiving 100 tweets on my cell phone while I’m at work. forget the fact that “official district policy” requires employees to turn cell phones off during school hours. I did figure out :smacks forehead: that you can receive DM updates only, and that you can choose whom you receive them from.

I very rarely use it for incoming messages on my phone, since my cell plan has a limit on my texts. On some occasions, I will turn notifications on on my phone, but I try not to since I’ve had overages the past few months. I post to it from my phone, though.

At home I use twhirl to send and receive tweets, and at work, I just log onto twitter.com (and just keep refreshing it).

Hmmm…I figured I would lose all my stats if I did something silly like that. God forbid I lose my OG status…
