I really only use it on the computer… but I really only use my phone for talking to people. I’m a young curmudgeon
There’s a thing calld twirl that is really cool. You have to be at the computer, but it takes away the point of going to twitter to read or post posts… I would love to have it on my phone, but its not web based (my phone).
Me too. Old before our time ladies, unite!
I have a phone that is just a phone, no camera etc. I am just old. So does twitter cost anything? Is it easy to sign up and get off if you do not like it? Is it Mac friendly?
I know I should go back to the question thread.
OK, I have signed up…I have no idea what I’m doing but I have signed up with AsetPewPew
It’s free and Mac friendly, just go to Twitter.com and start an account. DON’T do the “phone” part until you know what that entails. (You could end up with a ton of text messages, which can add up pretty quick.)
Go back through this thread and look for names to follow (@GWCChuck, @GWCAudra, and @SolaiGWC are good ones to start with.) Check back with Twitter in a few hours and you should see some messages going back and forth. You’ll pick it up as you go.
I am LeahWolf. I following just a few people. I will see how it goes.
How do we send a message to someone we are following?
There’s two ways. An “@” post and a direct message.
Most Twitter client software has an “@” button for posting a response. (Often looking like a curved arrow.) This indicates a response and is only seen by people following both parties.
You can also do a Direct Message, which is private. Only the recipient will see it. If you’re using Hahlo.com, it’s a option if you click on the person’s name. I’m not sure how to do it on twitter.com.
Messages - I haven’t figured out direct messaging yet (because I haven’t needed to). but you can reply publicly using @USERNAME and then the message. So if I were to respond to you, I would type @LeahWolf Here’s the message.
I hope that helps
edited to add - Pike beat me to it!
In general, whatever you type in in Twitter can be seen by anyone. If you look at the main Twitter public timeline (here) you will see what just about everyone worldwide is tweeting at that moment.
In practice, this is kind of useless. More commonly you will be looking just at your feed, which mainly consists of the public tweets by people you are following.
There are two ways to send a message specifically to someone. The first, as has been mentioned, is by @replies. Basically put @twitterid somewhere in your message and the message will go to that person. If they are following you then they will see it in their normal feed. If they are not following you they will still get it, but it will be under the @replies tab (so if they aren’t in the habit of checking there they won’t see it; many twitter clients pick those up and display them though).
If you are following someone and they @reply to someone else that you are also following then you will see the message. However, if you are not following the target of the @reply then you won’t see the message. (You can change this in preferences however.) You won’t see @replies from someone you aren’t following in any case.
(You can see these if you go directly to that user’s twitter page; http://twitter.com/twitterid)
Finally, you can direct message someone. This is done by starting your message with ‘d twitterid’ (minus the quotes). Basically replace the @ with a d followed by a space. Only your recipient will see the message and, depending on their settings, it may get sent directly to their e-mail and phone as well.
Hope this helps.
I am so proud I figured it out before reading this. (patting myself on the back.)
Great tutorial! Thanks!
I also signed up: thatlittleimp - but have yet to “tweet”.
I will either never get this, or I will get it and promptly become addicted . . . I am not sure which is worse.
B. Option B is worse!
Right - at least I have some semblance of concentration while I am at work now - Once I become a “twit” - or whatever, its over!
Does anyone know of some people who are good to follow besides are fantastic group? I mean like people who are on BG or other media related people. OK, I mean TV and movie stars etc.
People other than GWCers use Twitter? Kidding…anyway if look at who other people follow it might lead you to interesting places. Personally I enjoy Sockington the cat’s tweets http://twitter.com/sockington
Seconded on the follow Sockington senitment.
OK, I’m having way more fun than I EVER had on Myspace.
