The Orange Box

Anyone else looking forward to this, I’ve bought it off steam so I’m currently enjoying Team Fortress two (Which kicks the Butt of Halo 3 I’m afraid to say) and the inclusion of halo 2, ep 1 and ep 2 is nice but what I’m really looking forward to is Portal

If you haven’t seen the ad for Portal go check it out, it looks like an insane puzzle game that’s really original.

I’m just going to wait till x-mas for it … got to many other games to preorder this year (Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4)

I am so excited about this since I never got around to playing Half Life2. With an upgraded version of that plus the first 2 episodes, team fortress and portal its the best deal of the year. They really should have released this earlier with all the other stuff coming out I am worried that this is going to get lost in the shuffle.

I would totally agree they should of released it earlier in the summer and i would of played it hardcore. But now that Mass Effect and Call of Duty are right around the corner its taking a back seat. And I have Half-Life1/2 and Episode 1 and greatly enjoy them but the episode was only a day worth of material for me to get through so its taking a back seat because I probably wouldn’t even play team fortess much.

Earlier would have been better but in their defense with the Halo 3 multiplayer beta hogging all the attention maybe they were thinking this would be the best time to release it. The good news is that I have seen a few reviews and its getting 9.5 or higher on each one. Which as of now means its reviewing better than Halo 3. But I gotta figure the game is getting an extra point just for value alone from most reviewers.

I just finished Portals and I have to say that alone is worth the gaming price, its refreshing to have a unique puzzle element and the game is actually quite funny (theres a computerised voice that has some genius comments).

Team Fortress 2 is a great multiplayer game, best I’ve played in a long while, no unit plays like any of the others and all of them pose unique challenges.

I’ve not even started episode 2 though as Im working my way through half life 2.

I read most of the IGN review of the game and I can certainly see why it deserves the 9.5 they gave it and I will probably enjoy it a lot once i get it but I feel they should of released it early mainly because with so many people (say like chuck) spending so much to play halo 3 that possibly a lot of people who would of bought this game (me included) will have to wait till later to purchase it. Had it come out earlier before halo I would of bought it and now I got a few other games that take a higher value for me to own.

IMO

Half Life 2 > Halo 3

Team Fortress > Halo 3 multiplayer

Then you get Episode 1, Episode 2 and Portals for free.

If you have never played Half life 2 or the episodes before I would seriously recommend getting this game before/instead of Halo 3, and if you have played through Half Life 2 the extra episode, Portals and Team Fortress easily make the package worthwhile.

I have it in the mail on the way!

Man, TF2 is just so sharp. I love the stylish vibe they’ve given everything, some great great details in the maps I’ve played, I’m in love with the character design and voice acting and the classes are all balanced pretty well. It’s just a helluva lotta fun!

I started Ep2 this morning and eventually quit just to go back and place more TF2. I’ll get around to portal eventually…

I bought it even though I shouldn’t have spent the money but I must say I like TF2 a hell of a lot more than halo 3’s mp. Have yet to start Ep. 2 going back through half-life 2 and episode 1 first but I did go all the way through portal when I first got home. If you haven’t already beat portal and listen to the song at the credits … it is AWESOME.

Yeah, Nerium, you should definitly go play through portals right now, it only takes a few hours and it is definitly worth it, that alone is worth the £26 it cost me to buy it, plus challenge and advanced mode offer some extra dificulty after the game to help it last longer.

Played through a good chunk of the Orange Box this weekend, it was definitly worth the wait. Portal is simple yet very complex, but a really great and original idea. TF2 is shaping up to be my new favorite multiplayer game, and Episode 2 seems to live up to, if not surpass Half-Life 2.

Since I see we have a few gamers here, I’m thinking we should create a GWC Steam Community group. We could have game night and stuff, might be fun.

I haven’t tried the game yet, but if you’d like to set up your game night in meetups, I’d be happy to add it to the calendar for you.

OK, Portal is worth it just for the song at the end.

And cake!

I hadn’t played any of HL2 yet so I wanted to get Portal out of the way before I started on the whole campaign. And, uh, just looking at it… I may be gone for a while…

I’m actually considering picking this up at some point. As someone who’s never had any involvement at all with Half-Life – and isn’t the world’s biggest Zombie fan – would I enjoy it?

Well, I’m hardly the worlds biggest FPS fan but the original Half-Life is on my top 10 list of games and, from what I’ve seen so far, Half-Life 2 is every bit as good. Immersion and story are excellent (though I’m still a bit confused as to what is going on in 2).

I didn’t play 2 when it first came out because my old system couldn’t handle it, but I just upgraded to a shiny new quad-core so I’m finally getting to play anything made in the past couple of years.

So I would recommend it. And it isn’t a zombie game, btw. Heck, Orange Box is probably worth it just for Portal.

Here’s a fun review of Half-Life 2 and Orange Box that may help

I find it strange and slightly frustrating that I need to repurchase Half-Life 2 in order to pick this up. Does anyone know if one can download the episodes independantly through Steam?

They are priced out individually on Steam, but I don’t think they are actually making them available yet. And the way they are priced, the cumulative total is well above the $40-$45 price, even subtracting HL2.

They say you can “gift” HL2 to someone if you already own it, but I don’t know if that just applies to the Steam-purchased version.

Thanks Scryber. I find this utterly strange and wasteful. Bizarre.
