The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) 1/1 @ 10 PM ET

Yes, you did.

I don’t know if that necessarily counts for a person who prefers the BBC Hitchhiker’s Guide to the newer film version.

Good night, Pike.

Shoot what we dont understand

Good for her !! She’s got some cojones!

Nite Pike!

Who didn’t? But keep in mind, Doctor Who is essentially written for kids, who we treat as much more sophisticated today than we did almost 60 yrs ago.

Night Pike.

The new series has a much clearer story progression. I’d never suggest that the old series weren’t great, but you’re probably better off catching up on the old stuff after watching the new series.

Gort gets all the hot chicks!

In my mind the simplicity of Gort’s design, and his implied tremendous power, still works, and he’s probably still in my top three robot list even today.

That was so Frankenstein/King Kong.

One of the things I really love about this movie, particularly since it’s from the early '50s:

For all intents and purposes, Helen Benson, a known woman, single-handedly saves THE ENTIRE FRAKKIN’ PLANET. Without a man in sight.

That is pretty amazing. Let’s hear it for a woman with a mind of her own!

She did not even have a gun.

But not a very attentive mother

I do feel responsible for knocking this thread off topic, but one more thing.

Anyone ever read the original story? Apparently, Gort (called Gnut in the story) is really the master, and Klaatu is a cloned servant.

The message is of course that Gort is the ruler here. He/it has the power over Erf.

No one’s perfect. But, to be fair, she was a single mother who worked outside the home in the 50’s.
