The daily song you should listen too

“Baby I love you” by the yayhoos

The title sounds harmless by there is Language in it, and it aint the good kind.

Hey. Holidaze is here. If you’re tired of the creepy “Hark to the Bells” song and TSO, here’s some different holiday tunes for the season.

I’d originally entitled the mix “Fruitcake Weather” as a tip of the hat to Capote’s “A Christmas Memory,” but I’ve re-titled it in honor of my all-time favorite GWC re-imagined movie quote. If you’re driving, drive careful. Enjoy.

DxMas 8: "…Only, I Didn’t Say ‘Frak.’ "

  1. Cathy Saint “Big Bad World”
Old-school girl group. Not really a Christmas song, but it has the word “Christmas” in it.

  2. Darlene Love “Marshmallow World”
    Motown Xmas. Heck yeah.

  3. Bobby Helms “Jingle Bell Rock”
    Standard.

  4. Cathy Harrington “Sha La La”
    New-wavey new classic.

  5. No Doubt “Oi! to the World”
    Skankin’ around the Xmas tree.

  6. Ren and Stimpy “Happy Happy Joy Joy”
Not really a Christmas song, but fun nonetheless

  7. Scrooged commercials
Audio from Scrooged for holiday programming.

  8. La Bottine Souriante, “La Bottine Souriante”
Ties in the #7, Robert Goulet’s Cajun Christmas.

  9. Johnny Cash with Family and Friends, “Christmas Time’s Comin’ “
Recorded around 1980, the Johnny Cash and Friends Christmas album is, um, really, uh, interesting. And I love Johnny, don’t get me wrong.

  10. Whiskeytown, “Houses on the Hill”
    New alt-country classic.

  11. Drive-By Truckers, “Mrs. Claus’ Kimono”
    Ditto.

  12. Aimee Mann, “Have Yrself a Merry Little Christmas”
Aimee “Magnolia Soundtrack” Mann, also of Til Tuesday fame.

  13. Marie-Michelle Desrosiers, “Noël Blanc”
    “White Xmas” en Francais.

  14. Darlene Love, “White Christmas”
More Motown Xmas. You can’t go to the well too often with this one.

  15. Dave Brubeck, “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town”
Jazz piano instrumental from the “Take Five” guy. Somewhere out there is a version of “Take Five” that interpolates “We Three King.” Finding it is harder than you’d imagine, even with the Google. Anyone know anything about this?

  16. Holiday wishes from Coldplay
Coldplay’s holiday skit from last year. Not a big Colplay fan, but I thought it would be cool to have them host my mixtape.

  17. Fiona Apple, “Waltz”
Not really an Xmas song, but it’s Christmas-y, I think.

  18. Dave Brubeck, “Silent Night”
    More jazz piano.

  19. Peggy Lee, “I’ll Be Seeing You”
    See #17.

  20. Fiona Apple, “Parting Gift” (edit)
    See #19.

  21. Danny Elfman, “Victor’s Piano Solo”
The wonderful little piano bit from Corpse Bride

  22. DJ Shadow, “Midnite in a Perfect World” (edit)
Best. Instrumental. Ever. If you listen to This American Life, you’ll recognize it.

  23. Vince Guaraldi Trio, “Christmas Time Is Here” (alternate vocal take)
    Charlie Brown rulez.

  24. Low, “Taking Down the Tree”
    Somber little alt-Xmas number.

  25. Justin Timberlake, “D**k in a Box” (explicit version)
How could you not include this? “#1, Cut a hole in the box…”

  26. Charlie Brown interlude
    Audio clip bemoaning commercialization.

  27. The Dust Brothers featuring Tyler Durden, “This is Your Life”
Tyler Durden reminds us what the season is NOT about.

“The Sun Whose Rays Are All Ablaze” by Nora Zehetner from the brick soundtrack

Not really a song but close enough

As an aside if anyone know of other stuff like this, could you point me in the right direction

“Vicious Traditions” by the The Veils

Thanks for the kind words. I can do better than this if I think on it, but for now, have you accepted the following into your life…

… Fiona Apple’s “Extraordinary Machine” album? (Try the two songs from that Xmas list)

… the great, wide world of Tori Amos B-sides? (including, as long as we’re kind of on the subject, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas). Try the “Crucify” EP… it has covers of Zeppelin’s “Thank You,” Nirvana’s “Teen Spirit,” and the Stones’ “Angie.”

And it’s not piano-y, but try Ani DiFranco’s “Pulse” for a mellow spoken-word piece. Lush acoustic guitar.

Cheers,

“Lover’s spit” by Broken social scene

Been an ani Difranco fan for some time now. i buy just about everything she releases, As for Fiona Apple i just can’t get into her, i can’t say why its just one of those funny things, about music, now To the crucife Ep, I’ just bought it and my computer is downloading it as i Type this, good call:)

I understand with the Apple (Fiona) thing; as a Tori fan, I always viewed her as pretty non-essential. But she really came into her own with that last album.

Adriana, the Buffy Musical rules, by the way. Especially the retro-pastiche of “I’ll Never Tell.” I don’t care what Anya says; it has potential to be a breakaway pop hit.

Two-for today, 'cuz it’s important to have alternatives:

The Bangles, “Hazy Shade of Winter”

Lustra, “Scotty Doesn’t Know.” In honor of the raging Scott Caan/Godfather controversy. In no way an endorsement of pop-punk as a genre. And, tehnically, in Eurotrip, it’s performed by Oscar-winner Matt Damon.

November 25 2007

“Kanga Roo” by Chris Bruce & Jill Jones

Sorry for the late but Life/Insanity/ putting out fires (metaphorical and real) and getting a black eye, it’s been a memorable day.

Danzig, “Twist of Cain.”

Big, dark, evil song. Brilliant. One of the great, underrated rock albums. Not on a Led Zeppelin scale, but killer nonetheless.

“Black and white town” by the doves

Robert Silverberg” (MP3) by Bloodhag. Scream Metal with a literary bent.

In honor of DTA podcast #3: Journey, “Only Solutions.” Before the Sopranos, there was Tron. And you gotta remember: At the time, Journey was about the biggest popular rock band. Even though the song’s a little clunky.

If You Could See Into My Soul by Silverstien. Halfway between metal and screamo, its great.

“Call it ours” by the legends

Since we’re on a Metal kick:

“Petrified” by Severely Snaped (downloadable from their page) Old Skool metal as performed by Severus Snape.

F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X by The Fall of Troy

Very interesting post-hardcore band that livened up Guitar Hero III for me considerably.

From my iTues playlist today:
Creatures of the Night by The Creepshow
Devil at the Wheel by Crud
Helena by The Misfits

I think if Centurions had bands, they’d play metal. Maybe sophisticated hardcore.

Larry-model Cylons would sound like Voivod’s “Killing Technology.” Later, as they grew, they’d write stuff like “Tribal Convictions” – http://youtube.com/watch?v=TfpYIPbrcdY

And if the new-school Centurions had a band, it would sound like Converge’s “Plagues.”

But if Six had a group, it would sound totally different, like Vive La Fete’s “Jaloux.” Link to video of the song, but embedding is disabled:

BUT if Six DID sing metal, it’d probably sound a little like Arch Enemy:

About three years ago a Leoben decided to start a cyberpunk band, he created Celldweller. And when he invited Larry on for a song, they created the song Symbiot.
