Danny Trejo … is … the … hombre
Sci-fi double feature:
First one’s courtesy of Oddball:
Second one’s an oldie but a goodie:
And since I said “Science Fiction Double Feature,” here it is, in special star-studded form:
All,
To breathe some new life into this thread I’d like to add two new twists:
Here’s my submission: Cups by Anna Kendrick
Now, before your instant defences fly up give me a moment, hear me out. I’ve earned your trust on my judgement on content before it was cool to like (Archer, Enterprise, Eureka).
Why you should listen: If you have never heard it let me set the scene for you. One woman takes the stage. Having not prepared an audition she sits down on the stage edge and asks to borrow a tall plastic cup. What happens next is simple, slightly astounding and beautiful. She takes the cup and with some surprising movements creates a rich rhythm. Before you realize what hit you two verses later it is over. You are left realizing you have just experienced something you have never seen or heard before. I say all this as this was the way it was setup in the movie “Pitch Perfect” (don’t judge! Gems can be found in mud!) but the deal was really sealed for me when she did it live on national television on David Letterman.

Some of you may say, “it wasn’t really live, it is pre-taped! who cares? They could have done a few takes!” to which I would respond, "Imagine you are sitting on a stage in front of an audience of 500 people. One foot away is David Letterman literally staring at you as you take a cup and perform this. No safety net, it is just you and the cup. If you screw up and they reset now you are worried. Your hands are sweating. Whether she got it the first time or the fifth time the audience gives her a standing ovation. She has pulled something off remarkable.
Now I am a fan of acapella. I appreciate and enjoy a group of people singing with no instruments behind them or a single person standing on a stage alone simply with a guitar. There is a purity there, nothing is overproduced, it is simply there. The risk increases the value I think and the accomplishment is all the more satisfying. I am also a huge fan of rhythm. Give me a drum core or anything which a rich and pounding rhythm (Rusted Root anyone?)
With that being said I noted that there was a “Director’s Cut” made. I have to admit after she does the first verse I got really, really worried because all of the sudden there was accompaniment. Um, what? You people are missing the point of the entire song! I will admit by the end this version won me over, but not because of the music, but because of the video itself. You will see why.

Pandora seed song: A lot of my Pandora stations blend into each other regardless of my seed song which I suppose makes sense if I am picking from the same genre. My Jazz is Jazz tunes. My Modern is Modern. My singers and standards is … you get what I am saying. Cups as a seed song introduced me to a number of new artists that I had never heard before and songs I immediately enjoyed. Trust me on this, it will create a station of songs that if you have gotten any enjoyment out of this song you will create a station that rocks your world.
Original Song: So, that all being said here is the original song. Two verses, just Anna and a cup. No visual to go with it, but close your eyes and listen. Seriously. All you need to do is shut down the world for a minute and listen. You will thank me later.
