For my money, this time of the year – when it’s cold and snowy (where I live) – is Portishead season. Awesome beats, bewitching woman vocalist.
The band’s three albums are very different, but they’re all (mostly) quite good in their own way.
The first one is the one to get. It’s a trip-hop album: mellow sounds, but with hip-hop style beats. Very chill.
The second one is uneven. Has more of a 60s-noir-London-The Avengers (TV show) vibe.
After the first two records, they made a live album with a big string sections. Seems unnecessary, poorly matched and superfluous. But it’s awesome. Kind of like a best of the first two.
The third album’s optional, but some people with good taste dig it.
Here’s a song from Massive Attack that’s pretty Portishead-esque, “Paradise Circus.” You may recognize it as the title song from BBC’s Luther.
It’s an OSSIM rendition. First time I heard it I was listening to the album but without looking at the tracks. I remember thinking. This sounds familiar.
