We are addicted to BBT. I put the subtitles on the DVDs to help understand Sheldon sometimes.
Ok. Have now completed my Big Bang Bender and am completely hooked. I seriously pre-judged this show and didn’t give it the time of day.
For shame.
There are two qualities that you can use to describe something that will immediately attract me to it: It is clever, it has heart. This show has an enormous amount of both. The writing is brilliant, the acting pitch perfect. They go so far over the top and then pull it right back. My goal now is to work Bazinga into a real conversation…can someone remind me where he introduced the concept first?
Jim Parson’s MOM is a 1st grade teacher at our elementary school. Neither one of my sons had her as a teacher, but we see her up at the school often. The funny thing is she has many similar mannerisms to Sheldon! even the way she speaks sometimes reminds me of Sheldon on the show. It’s too funny.
To be perfectly fair to both Solai & Chuck, when the series first FIRST started, the show was over the top & almost mean spirited with the geek stereotypes & these characters. As theyve’ gone along & really developped them it’s really just been a love fest between writers & actors. IMO they have really struck a balance with making them over the top but making them likable as well. I love Sheldon, but he wouldn’t be Sheldon without Johnny Galecki to play off. The by play between Walowicz & Kuthrapali is brilliant. Penny’s “indoctrination” to their world has been great fun to watch.
That happened with me too with the show. Saw it when it first premiered and really hated it, but went back to it sometime in the middle of season2 (and then watched S1 after S2) and loved it. The transition from ‘laughing at them’ to ‘laughing with them’ in S1 was definitely there for me too.
I’m only three episodes in but I’m enjoying it so far. It has a similar sort of feel to Two Guys and a Girl except with more geek cred. I love the way they unashamedly spit out formulae and cite scientific theory. The producers of the show trust the audience to keep up and they don’t explain everything to you in minute detail.
So far the only complaint is that Penny seems a little clueless. That might just be juxtaposition though and in my experience the first season of everything is pretty crap in the grand scheme of things.
First season Penny is used as more of a prop than anything else. Second season 7 beyond they really fill out her character & make her a vital part of the show.
I totally agree with you guys here - the show really found its wings when it started concentrating on what geeks find funny about themselves instead of what other people find funny about geeks.
As was said before in this thread, that it isn’t afraid to make esoteric geek jokes is a huge factor as well.
Great show! I look forward to watching it every week.
Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock!
this show grew on me. used to be a fan of HIMYM and somehow stumbled upon BBT. add time, and now i thoroughly enjoy BBT and watch each episode on a weekly basis whereas HIMYM can accumulate and then i have a mini-catch up.
what i enjoy is the evolution of penny and her indoctrination into this group, best summarized by her explanation to to bernadette about the rules of the geek group.
also love sheldon’s mother and leonard’s mother - both the actresses and characters. oh, and sara gilbert as sheldon’s nemesis, Dr. Leslie Winkle.
plus, theme song by barenaked ladies.
LOL!! Sheldon’s “toaster” in tonight’s episode was hilarious!!
I caught that episode RIGHT on that scene (or just before). I’d never seen The Big Bang Theory before but I thought this was pretty funny. I may have to start “tivo’ing” this show.
This show rocks. The in-(geek)jokes are a riot.
And on a totally unrelated subject, Kaley Cuoco (“Penny, Penny, Penny”) is featured in the new Maxim.
IBIMB
Watched this show last night instead of 24 because I desperately needed comedy, not counterterrorism. Raj seemed so delighted with his audio-enhanced shirt. Is that from the ThinkGeek catalog?
Poor Penny. “Stanley…Tucci? Stan Lee, the guy in Star Trek? Or those kung fu movies?” You’d think by now Leonard would have asked her to dress as Sue Storm or Emma Frost for Comic-Con.
watching that Speaker T-shirt bit, reminded me of Nathan Fillion in a con several years back, when he had a cellphone that had all these sound bites in it.
The Ring of Power story last night was HILARIOUS. I have one of those rings (a toy) in my dresser drawer at home. My wife looks at me funny when I take it out and stroke it.
IYKWIM.
Don’t most people know who Adam West is? I hate that they still write Penny as being so clueless. She’s been around these guys for years; she would have picked up some geek knowledge, voluntarily or not.
Loved Raj and his lawyer cousin.
She knows about something called Radiohead which is never really explained in the show. If there is such thing then there is some stuff she knows more about.
I would think she was a fan of Family Guy.
That was a stretch. In the first season, she tried to quiz the guys on pop culture. Of course they were clueless. Of course, batman’s batman. He’s both geek and pop culture.
Big Bang Theory, the unaired pilot. Fascinating, because they almost have it, but not quite.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Man I like the chick nerd character, might like Katie more than Penny actually…damn
