Hell yeah, didn’t Queen Elizabeth I manage to chop off a guy’s ear with a regular sword? Imagine the possible accidents with a light saber.
Anyway, who’s that blonde Imperial officer chick with the widely open collar? The Dark Side has something to offer me after all. Seriously, is she new to the EU or can I find some comics about her somewhere?
Yeah, it doesn’t look bad. As cool as the Force powers and combat look, even that could get repetitive, but it seems like they have a decent story and characters going, so that could pull it through. The boss fights will probably be awesome.
Plus, Lucas has personally put a lot into this - It’s practically another movie.
EDIT:
She’s part of the new batch of EU they’ve made up for this game’s setting (Between III/IV). She’s the love interest of the main character.
EDIT2: Does it bug anyone else that more an more Jedi seem to be “slipping through the cracks” as the EU gets larger? Then again, I guess they weren’t all exterminated in one go. But, from what it seems like/what I understand, at least one Jedi will probably survive…
I’m waiting on reports regarding the Wii version. Ever since I heard about the Wii Remote concept I thought that a Star Wars game would be perfect for it. I’ve been holding of buying one for this reason. If it turns out to be cool on the Wii I may be investing it one.
The House of Lucas has historically put out a lot of disappointing Star Wars games. Which is sad considering all the time, money and talent they have at their disposal. Lately they’ve been turning things around and The Force Unleashed seems to be their best work yet. The physics engine alone should revolutionize gaming. Wood splinters realistically; Metal dents and buckles. No more collision-based break-aways. Ok enough geek-out
It bummed me out to read Lucas Arts laid off key members of the TFU team as soon as the game hit the final stage. Really casts an ominous shadow over the game’s pending release. I’ve learned not to get my hopes up with Lucas games, but this one does look temptingly promising. The story seems solid and interesting AND may even have KOTOR-like multiple endings. The combat looks solid and it has more rag-doll stormtroopers than any game in history haha. It looks like they knew what the game needed to be a success… whether they managed to pull it off remains to be seen. I’ll wait till the reviews start coming in and see if it lives up to the hype.
I always wished Lucas focused attention on revolutionizing the story adventure game instead of blowing his wad on mountains of weak Star Wars games. (tho the Lego Star Wars series was surprising great and fun investment… made by someone else hehe) They had suck a good thing going back in the day with Monkey Island, and Maniac Mansion. But never could translate it to nextgen. LucasArts seems to invest too much in fanboy service and short-change their innovations.
I also expect PS3 to do a similar price drop announcement at E3 next week. It’s really the only option they have left. It would take some big balls for them to hold their priceline and ride it out, and they might be crazy enough to actually do it.
I wonder if Lucasarts will eventually port a version to PC (it can’t be too hard to go PC from a 360 base. Easier than wii or PS3 anyway). I’m sure it’s a matter of time or sales. But yeah it’s a bummer you can’t just buy the game and a controller and run it off a spec’ed up PC (which is currently higher on my priority list than a PS3)
I loved those games back in the day and I have a pretty good idea why there aren’t any around anymore: back in the early '90s, computer games were very very simple on the graphics, people had to use their imagination a lot and that tended to make the creators, or at least some creators to go for witty stories, whereas today, you can do virtually anything with computer games, they look like reality, and you just - sadly - don’t seem to find enough people who would still be interested in an adventure story where you have to solve real puzzles instead of blowing people’s heads off.
I think the technology is available to re-imagine the old adventure style play and still make an intriguing and fun game. No one has yet to crack the code and it’s so much easier to just make something with cool guns and nifty explosions that sells millions of units. I always thought if anyone had the resources and manpower to do it, it was Lucasfilm.
Adventure games to this day consist of wandering around an absurd setting and rubbing items from your inventory against people or items not in your inventory till stuff happens or your get more items to rub in different places. There has to be another way to do this…
If you’re looking for an adventure game which is well written, well voice acted AND gorgeous looking, you might like Dreamfall. It was released on PC a year and half ago (so I guess it might be really cheap now) and it was released a month ago on Xbox Live Marketplace (you can download the whole game directly to you xbox for 1,200 Microsoft Points, something like $12)
