Star Wars: The Clone Wars Discussion Thread **SPOILER HEAVY**

Here’s a thread for spoilerized discussion of the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I wanted to start this now instead of waiting for the podcast thread because I want to get down my ideas while they’re fresh. Alright, I’ll start with some random musings:

*Overall, I really enjoyed it. I think the series has potential and I’m looking forward to the next episode.

*The art style really surprised me. It looks pretty good in motion, and there was more detail than I expected.

*The little details really pulled it through for me. I loved the laser howitzer things, the camo on the clones and war machines, the way soldiers fired and took cover, etc.

*Speaking of firing and taking cover, the battle scenes were the best things in the series so far. They’re well choreographed and when combined with that attention to detail it made for a very edge of your seat experience.

*Rex is awesome, and it was super cool to see him and the other clones with their helmets off.

*The dialogue was hit and miss with me. There were some times where it was okay, but most of the time it felt pretty forced, which leaves me to the next thought…

*Asoka. Argh. I dunno about you guys, but I found Anakin whiny enough. Now he needs a whiny apprentice? I hope she matures or something but right now she’s downright annoying.

*I love Asajj’s new look (and new voice actor? I couldn’t tell if it was the same one from the miniseries). It’s downright creepy and awesome. Plus we got to see her use both styles of her lightsaber which made for a very cool fight.

So what did you guys think? Promise or trash? Any serious haters out there?

I loved it and I’m so looking forward to this series because it promises to give us the Clone Wars like we’ve never seen them before.

The art style really bothered me at first but it’s grown on me since the first pic of Yoda for the series was shown last year. Now I think it’s awesome.

Rex is my favorite new character. He awesome in the movie and even cooler in the novelization.

The battle scenes made the movie because they are what I wanted to see in Ep. II and III. The battles alone were worth the price of admission for me.

I’m going to see the movie again in the morning and I’m now anxiously awaiting the series to start airing this fall.

What were the crowds like for you guys? For me the theater was about half full with about 50/50 kids and teens/adults.

That was pretty much the same breakdown at the theater I was at. There may have been slightly more adults than kids but it was a close call.

I’d say the theater was only about 1/4 full (at the most), pretty much parents with kids, but we went to a very early afternoon showing.

I thought the battle sequences were really good, and I know my kids loved seeing more of the clones like Rex. I didn’t fine Ahsoka (sp?) so irritating as much as I kept wondering would a Padawan be that much of a smart (sorry Barb) to her teacher?? Especially when they’ve just met? I guess that was one of the aspects that made it feel more directed towards kids. Overall I was pleasantly surprised , esp. after reading the dismal reviews on rotten tomatoes.

i was a little wary after seeing some reviews, but then realized that these are probably the same people that absolutely hated the prequels.

my friend and i went to a midnight showing thursday night, which had a surprisingly big crowd (to me at least) for something that is very much being promoted as a kids movie. i would say at least 1/3 to 1/2 were kids with their parents, the rest being hard core SW nerds like my friend and me. saw a few people dressed up as Jedi. one boy and his father had a lightsaber battle in the parking lot afterward.

as for the movie, i ended up really liking it. it definitely was more kid friendly than any of the other movies, but i was okay with that.

it kinda got off to a rocky start for me though. it just didn’t feel right to not have the 20th Century Fox intro, and then the modded John Williams theme intro didn’t sit right with me. the narrator voice-over also didn’t feel right, but i realize why it was there for something being targeted for kids over adults.

the animation looked great to me, some great battles. i was surprised to see in the credits that Sam Jackson and Christopher Lee were actually voicing their characters since all the others were different from the originals. as for that, i thought all the voice actors did a fine job, especially Obi-Wan.

i didn’t care one way or the other for Ahsoka.

it gave me high hopes for the TV show. right now i like the original Clone Wars show better, but i guess we’ll see about that.

i definitely want to see more of Ventress, and also Kit Fisto, who appeared in the opening narration, but wasn’t seen anywhere else. he was one of my favorites from the original toon. i think it would also be interesting to see Grievous worked into the series at some point. i think he would look great in the CGI toon style.

I went on Sat at 7:15. It was 3/4 empty and it was the only showing at the theater. IMO, bad timing coming off the Dark Night Swell and a backlash of the CG animation + prequels.

I thought it was a good, not great movie…better than episode 1 but not episode 3.

I wasn’t thrilled about the animation prior, but I loved it.

From what I have heard, IMO, the TV series will be better.

Some Battle sequences were a bit too busy.

Rex Character was really cool…great addition. I also liked Ahsoka.

****Get the book or the audiobook (only in DRM WMA…not at audible). It is much better! *****

I finally saw the movie today. I was pretty surprised with how fantastic the movie was. Sure the dialog is a little weak sometimes ( But no worse than the prequels). The action was right up there with the best of the movies. Two things bugged me. One the slight skew of the main theme. Two Asoka was annoying at times. Don’t get me wrong, she’s no Jar-Jar. I think the kid factor just plays too much for me. I do like how sassy she is when talking back to Anakin. I gave it some thought today after seeing the movie and the fact that Anakin has a padawan really bothers me. Given the previous Clone materiel and the movies, I’m just not clicking with the concept. Hopefully the new series will change my mind as Asoka grows on me.

I’m with everyone else about Rex. He is the bomb. I can’t wait to see the show. Hopefully we’ll get a few Republic Commando like episodes with Rex leading the charge.

I figured you would like it. If you like Rex, you should definitely read the novelization because Rex is a central character in it and kicks ass even more.

Anakin having a padawan did kind of bother me at first since there is already material out that takes place after this series that has no mention of Ahsoka, but Ahsoka herself didn’t bother me because her attitude is how I picture Anakin being at that age.

The changed theme didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would because it fits with the rest of the soundtrack. I’m a sucker for John Williams so I was upset that he didn’t do the soundtrack for this but I found myself actually liking the soundtrack. I don’t know why but the soundtrack for Clone Wars made me think of some of the BSG music, not that they are really similar, but I think the emphasis on the drums is what brings it to mind.

awesome, according to the Wikipedia article about the TV series:

The series is episodic, so it will not focus on Anakin Skywalker’s story. Specifics mentioned were:

* "There will be episodes with nothing but clone troopers"
* "There will be an episode just about Kit Fisto"

I saw it last Wed night at the theater where my daughter works. I was lucky enough to get to see an advanced screening for free. So there was only my wife, myself and my daughters (17,12) and about 7 other people.

I am a DIE HARD SW nerd, so I tried to set my hopes low for this one (figuring it may leave me with the same feeling EP:1 did when I first saw it… that of disappointment). Reason being, have hated I the Clone Wars animation since I saw the first pic of Yoda. I was not to hip on the Anakin padawan angle either.

So roll the previews, I found it funny they showed the “new” Harry Potter trailer and the few people that were there there cheered, at the end of the trailer it said " This November." Only to have it announced a day later that it has been pushed back to summer 09.

back to the CW movie. it felt odd not having the FOX intro and the lack of the crawling story board left me a little sad. Although I enjoyed the 40’s style WWII propaganda narration at the beginning. The battles were great. The dialog was well it’s Star Wars c’mon if it actually had great dialog I would really think something was wrong :stuck_out_tongue: The padawan plot did not bug me to much. BUT Asoka’s whining and back talk raked my nerves (maybe because it reminded me of the growing pains my teenage daughter has gone through  )
I grew tired of the ohh how cute “Stinky,” talk re: Jabba The Hutt’s maggot offspring and speaking of Hutts, two words, Jabba’s Uncle…wtf over???

Overall I enjoyed the movie and I look forward to the TV show and what Asoka’s fate will be after or even before, order 66.

Kit Fisto is almost as good a name as Salacious Crumb. Just sayin.

There’s an article about the Clone Wars on MSNBC here.

Wasn’t there an episode of the original series that was just about Kit Fisto?

That article brings up an interesting point about the chemistry between Asoka and Anakin being better than the Prequels with Anakin and Padme. I have to admit at one point I was thinking the relationship between the two seemed kind of creepy. I thought this line in the story was hilarious…

“Not since David and Maddie delicately danced the love-hate line on “Moonlighting” have two people — or in this case, a person and a pint-sized humanoid alien known as a Togruta — stirred up so much tension by outwardly avoiding it.”

Then there is the whole Ziro issue mentioned above. Personally I found him hilarious. I’ve read about similar feminine Hutts, but it’s a whole other thing to see one on film.

The first series was a miniseries. Kit Fisto had a pretty awesome 4 minute episode.

yea thats why i was so excited to see him in the first minutes of the movie, i’m glad he’s getting some attention in a full length episode.

Forcecast (The best SW podcast) has thier latest episode up today which is a review/roundtable and The Clone Wars. I was in the chat and listened live on Wednesday. A good listen for fans. The talk about Ziro is hilarious.

Here’s a fun little article that points out easter eggs in the movie. Easter Eggs

So I saw it today…domdomdom
I wasn’t expecting it to be so kid-oreinted. But I still managed to enjoy it.
Critisicsm:
The giant walkers wouldnt be able to walk up a cliff face
There was a certian feel that it was simplified, like they had to explain every little detail
Some animation was incredible, but some parts(occasional troop movement during battles and expolisons) looked bad. Granted, expolsions never look good, but these were outright bad.
I would have liked the originol actors to do the voices…but it didnt really bother me.
Im not sure weather i like it or not, but the new intro threw me off. On one hand i love the percussion, on the other, I love the originol, and dont want it to change
