Star Wars Blu-rays

I had a happy surprise on Friday when I got a very early birthday present of this set. With things I already had planned this weekend I haven’t had a chance to see them yet, but the box is pretty (I know that’s what matters, right!?) I’m looking forward to checking it out on our nice TV and all.
(this is also the first movie(s) I’ve had on blu-ray!)

An interesting (at least IMO) review…

Star Wars Blu-ray Review
Is the Force strong with this one?

Deleted/Extended Scenes: In total, there’s about an hour and a half of deleted footage, almost all of it new. Worth noting is that the deleted scenes previously included on the DVDs is not included here, so you might want to hang on to those if you’re a completist. It’s clear that instead of trying to be comprehensive, the focus in compiling this material was to bring as much new footage to the table as possible. And there’s some great, previously unseen footage here. For the prequels it’s mostly in the form of rough animatics and generally unfinished sequences, but the original trilogy includes several alternate cuts and excised scenes that we be of real interest to fans, including Luke’s trip to Tosche Station. (No, we don’t see any power converters.) Additionally, all the film footage has been scanned in 1080p.

Stuff like that really makes me want to get this set. But upon reading what’s left out (not just the untouched movies), I have to ask, "How can this be ‘complete?’ " Are they gonna release “The Ultimate Collection” or some such for the 3D release? d:

I picked this up on release day, only because of the 20 buck price drop (and a redeemed $25 gift card). Doing the math it’s about $13 bucks for a movie, not bad when in the $10 bluray pile there are hard to find such movies I want to add to my collection.
Anyhow, slowly going through them, I watched Star Wars IV, the opening scene to see how it looked. Cranked it up a bit on the receiver, it was very good, one thing I LOVED about the movies so far is the HD Audio, I have a 5.1 system, I would call it modified entry level, and the surrounds are very rich in effects. (On a cute note, my 2 year old turns to me as the Star Destroyer flys overhead, and says “Daddy, Biiiig Ship!”). If anyone is looking to upgrade their receivers to ones that decode the HD audio, this is a GOOD reason!
Episode one is VERY good, Pod Race took me back to the first time I saw it in the theaters. My biggest problem with Jar-Jar was I couldn’t understand him when he spoke, I understood him now. Picture wise I have to agree with some of the reviews I read, in some shots the actors looked a bit “waxy” but the CGI stuff looked amazing. My skin crawled (in a good way) during the scene where Jar-Jar and the Jedis swim to the underwater city, with the chorus singing in the background.
From what I understand the picture quality improves with the IV, V & VI, and the sound is just as good.
It seems that Amazon reviews and ratings on this set is pretty low, but if you look at a lot of the dates on the comments, they were posted BEFORE the disc set came out, Bluray.com gives it about what I would expect.
Sadly I will buy what Lucas puts out (if I deem it good) this IS Star Wars in High Definition, unless you somehow have a copy of the HD-DVD format, it will be the only High-Def available until the next release…
I waited years and years for the original release of Blade runner, and when I brought the disc (even before I OWNED a bluray play, but I had access to one!!). I finally sat down one Saturday night and watched the “MOVIE FROM MY CHILDHOOD” (you know, the Film Nior, no unicorn dream one). You know what, it just wasn’t the same, but I didn’t let it bother me…
I don’t mind the Star Wars with tweaks…

With getting the Complete Saga for my birthday, I think I will be showing my kids the movies in the IV, V, VI, I, II, III order. I think this would be more
kid-friendly than seeing Revenge so soon. Do you agree with this?

There is no surprise at the Vader reveal if you start with episode 1, so I say yes assuredly show them in production order.

Don’t know about kid friendliness, though. Not that I doubt it, I just have no opinion either way.

Totally agree. Star Wars ( aka Episode IV ) was the film that sparked so many imaginations. That is the film I watch the most. I highly recommend starting there.

I would also suggest following Film Nerd’s Drew McWeeny’s order: IV, V, I, II, III, VI. This allows for the full impact of the reveals. In V, Darth Vader says he is Luke’s father but you’re still not sure. He could be lying. I think this is the best order to watch the films the first time because you get to see a hero fall and in the final film (VI) redeemed.

IV, V, I, II, III, VI might be a bit confusing to follow.

As far as being kid friendly, the decapitation scene freaked me out in the theater. d:

Great, more explaining to be prepared for. There is quite a bit of that stuff throughout the Saga.

Best and only acceptable viewing order for anyone is: IV, V, VI.

To be fair, once I saw the decapitation, I was fine with anything else like Luke losing his hand or Han getting frozen.

I guess it desensitized me. (I’m just kidding in case it’s not obvious)

You prolly won’t get any disagreements here, but kids love the prequels afaik.

Like you can count all kids to like the same movies? I was a “kid” when the prequels came out (at least the first), and I thought they were alright but never once did I ever think they were or would be as good as the originals.

I did say afaik. d: I was thinking 10 and younger though. Dunno about 11+.

I suppose. I guess we can all agree about the important part which is the order.
