Star Trek XI (Spoilers)

My sister also confirmed. Thanks  I would hate for them to go to all that effort only to have the solar system eaten up by the anomaly.

Though to be fair, both my sister and I were hoping that they’d go through the anomaly… and be able to save Vulcan. Alas.

You want my honest reactions or should I censor myself?

censored version- Holy frak!!! That was fraking awesome!!!

I just got home from seeing Trek a little while ago. I’ll admit I’ve never been a big Trek fan as in I will watch Golden Girls and I Love Lucy re-runs I’ve seen too many times to count before watching anything Star Trek. I’ve seen a few of the movies and watched an episode from time to time when there was nothing else on. I only mention this to set the stage for my opinion of the movie. I abso-frakkin’-lutely loved the movie. It was funny, the story was great, the effects were awesome and the casting was fantastic. I loved seeing Karl Urban in the movie and thought he was great. But then I could be a bit biased since he’s the reason I decided to see the movie because the Xena fan in me simply has to support Xena alums when they appear in anything else. If there weren’t a ton of other movies coming out that I’m planning seeing I’d probably see it again but I will definitely be buying Trek when it comes out to add to my sci-fi collection and if they decided to make more Trek movies like this one with this cast I’d totally see them as well.

I think there was bet to see how many times they could Chekov to use words with the letter “v”, wictor wictor, ewacuation, wulcan

Saw the film tonight, WOW! Need to see this again, hopefully in Imax.

Yet no ‘Wessel’. Unless I missed it

I went and saw it with a friend of mine who is only vaguely into Trek and a lot more into Star Wars. He’s probably only seen Khan and First Contact and a few episodes of Voyager.

When the red shirt sits down next to Kirk & Sulu talking crap about blowing up Romulans, my buddys says “That dudes so gonna die”

My comment to Chuck about this was that I thought they Chekov’s accent was a bit overdone. But then I realized that it was pretty overdone in TOS too (nuclear wessels anyone?) so I felt better.

Now that I slept on it.

I loved it except for a part

**********SOILERS AHEAD

The beginning with the vintage car. I can’t tolerate kids way too “mature” for their age or that can do crazy stunts like that. It always takes me back to Star wars I and the stupid pod race. (shudders). So a big disconnect there.

Also I cringed at the randomness to find Future Spock

For the rest it was great.

Loved the “red suit” when they go flying (or falling) for the Drill.

I agree that Chekov accent and age was a bit much. I know I wouldn’t have been let close to a bridge and probably not a ship when I was 17. But he was fun in his own way.

And a lot more but I don’t want to be too spoillery. Because I know some of you didn’t watch it and are reading this. I can see you ! (well not really)

We went to a 9pm show last night - fullest theater I’ve been in for a long time, and you could just tell everyone was loving it. I know I did!! I love the chemistry the cast has together - and Karl Urban as Bones - he was unbelievable!!
Can’t wait to see it again!

Saw it last night, it was great. Anyone else get a BSG fealing from the engineroom on the new Enterprise. I thought it was great to see a more industrial look on a Federation ship.

Indeed I felt a lot more that this was a ship. Especially in the beginning when the other ship get blown to pieces and people fall into space. Makes it a lot more realistic. It’s more poignant when you can see the casualties then just hear someone on the bridge say that they’ve lost 40 people.

So I don’t get flammed : I’m aware the series runned on a much lower budget.

I think it’s good to know they still have Budweiser in the 23rd Century.

That’s good to know? Of course you may be refering to th Czech beer, in which case I quite agree.

In Iowa. We have no proof that it is available anywhere else in the Trek-verse.

Totally noticed that. And that he was in a wheelchair!

TighGetsPunchedALot…halfway through the movie I thot, “TighGetsPunchedALot is going to have to change his name to KirkGetsPunchedALot.” Holy craaaaaaap he took a punch to the face every five minutes.

And chocked. Don’t forget he gets chocked every 10 minutes!

Saw it this morning & was quite impressed. I loved how this Star Trek universe is firmly rooted in TOS lore, yet has no problems severing ties in favor of a unique plot point. While I hope this doesn’t mean we should expect armageddon in subsequent movies, it IS nice to know that nothing seems to be off-limits.

As for the cast, I can only nitpick at Chekov’s owerly-heawy accent, especially in his first scene. Other than that, I fully accept these new actors in these roles. I used to think of Karl Urban as Eomer from Lord of the Rings, but now I have to think of him as DeForest Kelley, cos DAMN did he evoke the man on an eeeeerie level. I do wish this movie could’ve been made sooner though, Leonard Nimoy really tore me out of the story with his deteriorated speech. Obviously it’s not his fault, but it’s like seeing Schwarzenegger in Terminator 3 where he’s clearly too old for the role. Yes I know Spock’s supposed to be old in this movie, but it’s still jarring.

If you loved this movie, I’d highly recommend the Countdown comic prequel miniseries, which gives much greater backstory detail regarding Nero. It’s too bad a little more of this couldn’t be included in the movie, but I suppose the filmmakers felt the mind-meld scene gave enough exposition.

I’m VERY anxious for a sequel now. And a BK Kids Meal.

I hate to say it, but I was underwhelmed. I didn’t hate it, but I was expecting something a little more interesting from Abrams. It had some of the ‘Star Trek Babies’ air about it that I was initially worried about. Also, the plot made no sense.

The GF, OTOH, absolutely loved it and thinks me a lesser person for not adoring it.

I kind of agree with you but am still turning over my thots in my mind. I saw the movie with a spastic 8-year-old boy next to me who wouldn’t stop talking, so I attribute part of my feelings based on that. I do feel they did an excellent job of cramming a ton of plot into two hours…I look forward to the next movie where they don’t have to spend half the movie introducing characters and nodding towards the past, truly being untethered and allowed to find their own ‘space’
