Economy, as others have mentioned. They ‘cheated’ as much as they could. You’ll start to recognize shots that get used a lot, like Kirk running toward the camera.
There was a bit of insistence from the cast members to ensure they all could come back. (Chekov fell by the by because he was only in two of the three seasons.)
Note that Doohan does almost all the non-principle male voices, while Nichelle and Majel do almost all the other females.

Whenever you see something pink (tribbles, Kzinti suits) it was supposed to be brown, it just looked the same to him. I assume the gray thing is something similar.
