ST:The Next Generation 3X02 The Ensigns of Command - 6/1 @ 10PM ET

Trek Tuesday, June 1st, 2010
10 PM Eastern - 7 PM Pacific

“That was the stun setting. This is not.”

Grainger Hines, the guy who plays Gosheven (the leader of the community), asked that his credit be removed from the screen. His dialogue all had to be dubbed by another actor.

During filming the Dali Lam and his posse of monks (all of them Trek fans) visited the set and took a photo with Data.

Mart McChesney, who played Armus (the black tar that killed Tasha), plays the Sheliak in this episode.

Data’s shuttlepod is named for Ellison Onizuka, one of the real-life astronauts who was killed during the space shuttle Challenger’s tragedy in 1986.

At Phoenix Comicon this weekend, Jonathan Frakes had a great one-liner, stating that Denise Crosby made a “great career choice” in bowing out of TNG. Said tongue in cheek, but you could tell he meant it too.

Why’s that? Any idea?

I thot I recognized the voice. Neat.

After filming was completed, it was decided that his voice didn’t have the presence they wanted in the episode – he sounded too much like John Wayne – so they dubbed in the voice of another actor. Because of this, Hines asked that his name not be credited.

Poor Data. Papa Picard left his recital.

Apparently, there is some dispute about that.

And what would your second guess be, Will?

I remember reading about that in the Star Trek Companion and confirmed it on Memory Alpha. Either way, the dub is pretty good.

It must have been a pretty big issue whatever it was, to dub in a fairly major character’s entire appearance like that.

Duotronics were invented by Dr. Daystrom whom we met in the episode ‘The Ultimate Computer’.

But definitely a dub. Funny that I’ve never noticed it before. It’s obvious when you look for it.

Most dialogue is dubbed to get the sound right. Sometimes the sets are noisy (creaking floors, echos, etc)

Um, you’re not gonna be bullied. You’re gonna be dead. Great leadership.

That was a huge problem on TOS set, if I recall. Very squeaky floors.

“It’s not water. It’s blood, and it’s sweat…”

eww…

What is interesting about this episode? We get to see Data make command decisions. Riker manages Data’s progress and the progress of O’Brien and LaForge. Picard handles the Sheliak problem. More characters than the captain making decisions.
