Spartacus: Vengeance

I get the feeling that Ashur is the new Batiatus… a person with low position but huge ambition, very good at scheming but unlike Batiatus, Ashur’s a lot harder to kill.

what’s Ashur promising those men he recruited?

And everytime someone mentions the name Gaius to Lucretia, I can’t help but see Number 3 and Gaius Baltar…

There’s also no more Mr. nice Gaius… I mean he wasn’t that good before hand, but at least he wasn’t horrible to other Romans…

I enjoyed the new episodes a lot. I like how Spartacus now has a purpose, and not just reacting to thing.

I’m a week and a half behind on this season. Guess I’m just not really into it. The first season took some time to get rolling, so it definitely deserves the benefit of the doubt. But…

If you could feel a tiny bit sympathy for Ashur like most people had for Batiatus, then I could agree. But this conniving SOB Ashur…

Dinaari, aka. Coin I would guess!

Maybe at the end he might help to bring the Senate down. :stuck_out_tongue:

But watch til the end of Episode 5 and if you still feel this way. It felt like a mini-arc for the first 5 and the repercussions from episode 5 will drive forward til the end of this season.
I’m already “comfortable” with Liam as Spartacus, but the change for Naevia still irks me.

yea… Naevia is way weird… especially when so many of her lines are “this is not the same girl you loved before” … no kidding…

It’s already awesome by episode 4. Episode 5 I think is how the rest of the season will be like.

New Naevia also rubs me the wrong way. I understand that she’d be affected by her experience in the mines. On Twitter, showrunner Steven DeKnight addressed the situation by saying something like, “Different? Yes – changed after months of repeated rapes and brutalizations.”

I can’t quite put my finger on what I don’t like about her.

I’m not hating on the show; I’m still gladly watching it. It just hasn’t grabbed me yet this season. I think it will.

I like where they are taking her though. I see how and why she is changed and why she reacts poorly to intimacy. I think that’s just honest and real. What I love in episode is Crixus was ready to take Naevia and leave the shores of Rome, especially after Gannicus telling him if he wants her alive they should leave the rag tag fleet (i mean… rag tag group), but it was Naevia who wants to stay and learn to fight and kill Romans to find herself. Of course, not saying killing will heal anything, but I like her determination in the matter. Had it not been for Naevia, Crixus would have left with Gannicus.

OK. I’m still behind, but just finished “Libertus,” the arena episode. I’m in. Spartacus is back, baaaay-beeee!

I’m Castor Troy! I’m Castor Troy!

The last episode felt odd. I think it was the directing and the way it was cut together. It didn’t really flow, and the narrative felt all over the place.

So, Agron’s people spoke modern German? I suppose substituting for some kind of celtic/germanic language of any tribe from what the romans called Germania. Is it odd that when it comes to bringing historic authenticity, German is almost always spoken as is, but people are perfectly fine with Latin substituted by British accents, or any kind of none-American accent? It’s odd that suddenly all Agron’s people understood Spartacus’ speech though…
Thank the gods that Agron intervened, and put an end to the insult to Naevia, but still, Crixus isn’tgoing to forgive him anyway. Since when is Agron so important anyway… why does Spartacus consult him on everything…

Why did Ganiccus attack the envoy instead of attacking Glaber in his sleep? I thought Lucrecia asked him to go to the Villa, or has my English deteriorated so much that I completely misunderstood? And my, Ganiccus chopping people down is a sight to see…

As for Doctore’s sudden cheerfulness after getting out of bed is also very strange. When did Spartacus give him a cause? It just wasn’t handled very well, or did I miss something…

Its flow didn’t feel that weird for me.

About the German: it was decent, like the Spartified Roman they use on the show but not on the same correctness level. I also feel uncomfortable when they pronounce his name “Glayber” instead of “Glahber” since I had 5 years of Latin and remember how names like Lucretia were really pronounced back in the day.
Of course they couldn’t expect to air a Series in Latin with english subtitles. Though I was also surprised how fast Gregor Clegane (GoT actor) and the others learned the Latin aka, English language so fast. :eyebrow:

Regarding Gannicus, I think he made up his one mind after seeing all the crucified slaves and how Glaber handled him, that he devised a new plan to abduct Ilithyia. Your hearing and English skills is still fine, the original plan was to kill Glaber in his bedchamber.

And yeah, Doctore joining the rebellion was rushed when we compared his feelings about it in the 1st episode of this season.

i guess we have to wait for explanation on both Gannicus not attacking Glabber, and the sudden shift of attitude for Oenomaus. Both really important things that I thought was way more interesting than Agron’s recruits. Not that I didn’t enjoy hearing German, but that was a very drawn out plot just for getting new men. While we saw Agron realizing that being with his people doesn’t necessarily means being on the same page, and Spartacus facing a semi-challenge to his leadership, neither are so important that warranted sidelining the other two stories, especially the one of Oenomaus, because I feel like that one won’t get addressed ever again.

Ashur must diiiiiiiiiieeee. Die, Ashur, die. Die. Die. Die. Slowly.

Analyzing the language(s) on any level, nothing good is going to come from it. I will admit: As someone who pays attention to language but knows no Latin, I’m curious if there’s a there’s a real historical-linguistic precedent for dropping articles, or whether they just do it randomly, for dramatic effect, to create a faux-antiquated feel.

Anyhow, Ashur must die. Discuss.

Re: languages - even I was thrown off by the use of what I could understand as ‘real’ German when Agron’s people started talking. I think they chose to focus on that arc so that it would give Spartacus his chance to regain control of the whole group. Because Agron was one of the original gladiators, Spartacus trusts him and acknowledges his strength and ability to fight. He also has proven, for the most part, the most stable gladiator left since Crixus went a little Naevia-crazy. I would like to see them explain more of Oenomaius (sp?) story between talking with Gannicus and deciding to join Spartacus again with the urge to train the new recruits.

And yes, Ferris, Ashur must die. And it must be slowly and very, very dramatic. I want such an end for him. So evil. I never trsuted him, but he has become much worse and even though everyone acts for themselves and their own interest, his desires are for himself and for putting every other person around him down in a dirty way. His treatment of Lucretia makes me sick. Also, his face looks weird with no beard. Re-beard him.

By the way, had Varro survived, do you think he would have joined Spartacus in his cause? Or would he have simply walk away, since he is a Roman anyway, and only sold himself into slavery to pay his debt, now he is no longer bond to the deal, i suppose he is a freeman and can join his wife to live as romans again?

Or would Varro have try to talk Spartacus out of going down this path, but each time Spartacus went farther, Varro follows him out of friendship and loyalty?

If I remember correctly, in Latin there are no articles like “the”.
Regarding Ashur…yeah, don’t see him surviving the finale. AT some point the bitch named “Karma” has to get him.

Good question. I would say it depends on Varro’s world view if the Roman Society with holding slaves are just or if people shouldn’t be put to shackles depending on where they are born or later overthrown and put to slavery by some masters as the Romans did.

ahh! I just caught back up again this week (I was behind two episodes since the meetup).

First off, thank you Lucretia for finding that bracelet. Second, way to waste it on a silly little girl. Although, the way that whole relationship got wound up and then ended… abruptly, very good writing. Also, I may have jumped a bit when Ilithyia showed up.

I can’t wait to see how they wrap all of this drama up at the end here. But I know they better do something about Ashur… he must die.

Since that last frame of the episode with the assault on Seppius ended with Ashur taking the bracelet…yeah saw it already coming that Lucretia would find it in Ashur’s belongings.
Poor Seppia, tried to survive in a den with the likes of Monsters named Lucretia and Ilithyia. I also was flabergasted when she stabbed her and then slit her throat.

I this last episode will be another massive battle with losses on Rebel as well as Roman sides. My guesses who will fall:
Rebels: Gannicus, Mira, Oenameus, Naevia
Romans: Glaber, Ilithyia, Ashur

Wow… just… wow…

The Gannicus v.s. Egyptian fight is the highlight of the entire episode for me… That is also why I was extremely sad to see the Egyptian die. He was one awesome villain that challenges the rebels beyond political maneuvering. It could have been awesome to see some of Ashur’s henchmen join Spartacus.

The ending to this episode echos season 1’s ending. Spartacus unites the rebels. There’s a fainted woman, belly cut open, robbed of her baby’s life, her husband cut down by Spartacus, lying on the floor of the house of Batiatus.

I am also sad to see Doctore go… he is perhaps the most just man in that entire universe…

Glabber and Ashur, I know people wanted to see them dead, and I know Glabber would be dead since he never appears again in history after this fight, but Ashur… man… that’s one crazy villain… he’s Joker kind of crazy…

Nice echos you spotted there.

Yeah, it was sad to see Oenameus gone, but I guess he already has served his purpose.

Was obvious that Ashur wouldn’t return for Season 3, but I was very surprised too see who took his life.

I was guessing the rebels would build para-gliders with the branches and their clothes to start a surprise attack onto the Romans.

EDIT:
OMG!: She died as well! From the mouth of Steven S. DeKnight http://boobtubedude.com/index.php/2012/03/30/spartacus-vengeance/spartacus-finale-creator-steven-deknight-dishes-on-tonights-shocking-episode/
Mark to see spoiler

Plus? I think it’s just a crackerjack ending to that story. She takes the baby over the cliff, and Ilithyia dies…I just couldn’t ask for a more grand, operatic finish to their story.Did she actually die? Or just pass out from shock? I’ll admit I thought the latter.
Dead.
If Lucretia could survive Season One, I thought there was a medicinal possibility that Ilithyia might make it.
She’s completely and totally dead.

That makes my prediction record 6 correct out of 7.
Only would have had to swap one Rebel with another Roman.
